As the lab's mirror shuddered, a tall figure stepped out before him.
Amaranth short hair, powerful muscles, long legs, a black, metal-punk outfit—and the signature white scarf masking the cheek scar.
So the next stop was Totto Land, huh.
The visitor was none other than the first of the Three Sweet Commanders, hailed as the Charlotte family's finest masterpiece—Katakuri.
At five meters tall, he looked like a little giant—enviable, really.
Beside him stood Brulee, who looked like an old witch—the Paramecia-type user of the Mira Mira no Mi (Mirror-Mirror Fruit).
She could link any mirror and travel via the special space known as Mirro-World.
That's why the two of them had found him first without alerting the island's guards.
While Reinhardt sized up Katakuri, the other man fixed his eyes on him in turn.
He wanted a good look at the scientist who had cracked the century problem of human gigantification—
And to gauge whether Hughes posed a threat now or might endanger the family in the future.
Honestly, when the intel first came in, everyone had been stunned.
The Giant race had always been Mama's sore spot.
For years, totto land had tried to wear down the rift with the Giants, but to no avail.
They were like a rotten, hard bone—impossible to chew,
Yet impossible to throw away.
In totto land, even a three-year-old knew Giants meant power.
If they could claim that strength, Mama might truly seize the Pirate King's throne.
So the Big Mom Pirates had mobilized to a man.
For Hughes, who held giantification tech, they would win at any cost.
For a moment, the two sides faced each other in a strange silence.
"Onii-chan, we should hurry and get Dr. Hughes out of here," Brulee urged her brother, anxious.
This was no time to brood and pose.
"Dr. Hughes, we are from totto land, under the Big Mom Pirates," Katakuri said in a low voice.
"Mama values your talent greatly. Before we left, she told us to treat you with the utmost respect. We hope you'll come with us."
"And a grand tea party has already been prepared for you in totto land."
"So Big Mom has her eye on human gigantification," Hughes raised an eyebrow.
"Yes. Mama is going to be Pirate King. Human gigantification can help us conquer these seas."
"Whatever you require—if the World Government can provide it, the Big Mom Pirates can do the same."
"As long as you work with us, the entire resources of the Big Mom Pirates will serve you," Katakuri said, sincerely.
"You've come a bit early. The tech you want is still only a half-finished product."
"Even as a half-product, its effect is enough to shock the world."
"Also, we're fully apprised of each of your breakthroughs. We have absolute confidence in you," he added.
"You will complete the giant drug and realize Mama's dream."
"Oh? Seems your intelligence network works well—able to penetrate a place crawling with Government agents."
"I've heard your crew is first in the trade at intel; looks like that wasn't just talk."
"No—this time, someone informed the entire underworld. You were betrayed by your own people."
"Oh? Who?"
"You don't seem surprised."
"When you're in the spotlight, rumors follow. Some people will always envy talent."
"Caesar," Katakuri said without the slightest attempt to cover for him.
"Him, huh. Makes sense."
"He leaked my info to lure you in. He thought if he drove me out, he could hoist the Navy Science Division's banner—never mind Vegapunk still exists; any good thing won't fall to him anyway."
"Still, he's a decent scientist—an authority on weapons of mass slaughter. You're not interested in him?"
"Compared to you, Dr. Hughes, he weighs far less. We came for you."
"In the future, you will change the world—no, you're already changing it. The whole underworld is going mad for you."
"Spare me the flattery. I don't object to working with you."
"Thank you for your trust."
"totto land is already building a top-tier lab for your research."
"That's the least you should do."
"But be clear: this is a partnership, not an employer-subordinate relationship."
"With or without you, I'll complete the giant drug."
"It's just that, as things stand, you'll be the biggest beneficiaries—the ones picking the fruit."
"And don't think that with your resources you can crack the tech yourselves."
"The scientists you keep aren't up to it. In this world, besides me, perhaps only Vegapunk could do it."
"You're masters at piracy," he said evenly.
"When it comes to research, I'm the authority."
"On that point, rest assured. I can guarantee it. As long as you're our partner, we won't harm your interests."
"Good. From now on, finished batches of the giant drug will be handled by your crew."
"Whether you use them yourselves or sell them is your business—I won't meddle."
"But you will buy from me at market value."
"My future research funding can be deducted from my share of the profits."
"As you wish."
"If you have no further concerns, please gather your things and come with us at once."
"I can leave now." He had already stored what mattered in the system; what remained outside was junk.
Walking the spatial corridor of the Mirro-World, Hughes took in everything around him.
A rare space-type Devil Fruit—mirrors of every sort lined the walls.
These were mirrors Brulee had touched, recorded by the Mirro-World.
All they had to do now was find the pre-set mirror for Whole Cake Island, and they'd be back at base.
What a convenient Devil Fruit power. Tempting.
