"Impossible!"
"Absolutely impossible!"
A shrill roar tore across the skies above the secret laboratory on Punk Hazard.
"No one in this world can conquer the experiment of human gigantification."
"Not even you—my fellow 'genius scientist'—can do it."
"Reinhardt Hughes."
"You damned bastard, stop daydreaming."
The speaker was so worked up that the gas swirling around him visibly swelled.
He had long, spiked black hair, with horns on his head that were definitely not decoration.
Every time he saw those horns, Reinhardt had the urge to saw them off.
Who knew if the guy was some kind of oni; he looked human enough while not quite being one.
Over three meters tall—making Reinhardt's own one-ninety height, which he'd always been proud of, lose all advantage the moment he crossed into this world.
Reinhardt wasn't a native of the Grand Line. In his previous life, he'd been a top-tier physicist and biologist.
His proudest work was developing a gene serum that helped humans break the gene lock and surpass the limits of the body.
Before he could reap fame and fortune and enjoy the worship of the world—
A blood-red bolt of lightning fell from the heavens, and that's how he was brought to the world of the Grand Voyage.
And in his head, a system appeared: the "God of Technology."
From the system he learned that it was precisely because he created an over-the-cap existence like the gene serum that he'd been rejected by the world itself.
Everything about the human race—talent, lifespan—was like a program, pre-written in advance.
Now a "virus" had appeared to rewrite that program.
What would the will of the world do?
Thus a heavenly punishment descended, intent on erasing him completely.
Fortunately, the system arrived in time and ferried him to this even more dazzling world,
where he could unleash his abilities and ambitions to the fullest.
One day, he would returnand smash that so-called world will to pieces.
After arriving here, of course he threw himself into what he did best.
As it happened, the seas were abuzz with news: funded by Lu Feld, the Peace Research Institute—MADS—was recruiting scientists with bright futures.
Reinhardt volunteered at once.
After all, if he wanted to realize his ambitions quickly,
lone-wolfing it was impossible.
He needed the vast logistical support that could sustain serious experiments—
from the configuration of high-end laboratories, to R&D funding for projects, to a safe environment for testing…
As the saying goes, it's cooler in the shade of a big tree.
Given his situation, embracing a major power was the best choice.
The World Government naturally ranked first among prospective "hosts" he could parasitize.
But the forces of certain great pirates—the future seeds of the Four Emperors—weren't bad either.
Whether it was the Big Mom Pirates or the Beasts Pirates, he had things that would interest them.
Of course, the newly risen underground kingpin codenamed "Joker," Doflamingo, was also a suitable option.
Only, right now he was a nobody.
Even if he recommended himself,
chances were they wouldn't spare him a second glance.
He had to blast his name across the sea first.
Only then could he sell himself for a good price.
As for why he chose to join MADS, another reason was that MADS's research results were shared.
He could continuously draw nourishment from scientists across many fields.
Knowledge was priceless.
And only by mastering more technologies could he materialize tech points within the system.
Only with tech points could he manifest the miraculous technologies of worlds beyond in the God of Technology system.
The system had two panels: a Technology panel and an Achievements panel.
The rare technologies on the Technology panel required tech points to redeem.
The Achievements panel, however, only needed gold—the universal currency of myriad worlds.
Looked at this way, the system had given him a wide road.
And compared to the harder-to-acquire tech points, with his wits
he could completely manifest finished achievements first, then reverse-deduce the corresponding technologies.
To join MADS, you had to prove you had the chops—by presenting tangible research results.
Otherwise, you'd be shown the door.
As his calling card, Reinhardt presented a human-enhancement drug that would one day appear:
the E.S. pill—short for "Energy Steroid."
Taking it increased blood flow and multiplied strength (one pill doubled it, two pills quadrupled it, and so on).
But the side effects were hefty: overdosing caused bodily mutation, intense agony, and ultimately accelerated aging—
shaving off your lifespan.
What should have been a banned substance became wildly popular on these seas.
Pirates, underworld gangs, bandits, bounty hunters, national guard units, even the Marines who symbolize "justice"—
some people loved the thrill of getting stronger fast.
Others stashed it as a lifesaver for crises.
Just a single pill could flip a losing battle on its head.
Demand utterly dwarfed supply.
Because the pills were scarce, the price had once been bid up to ten thousand belly apiece.
As the direct beneficiary of this technology, Lu Feld raked it in.
With money flowing, his loansharking empire boomed as well,
and he faintly became one of the overlords of the underworld—hailed as the "King of Usury."
You could say Reinhardt had indirectly made that happen.
So, in Lu Feld's eyes, Reinhardt was his lucky star,
rising within MADS to a status second only to Dr. Vegapunk.
As long as this world knew no peace, E.S. pills would always have a market.
Thanks to that, Reinhardt's reputation as a scientist became a mix of praise and condemnation.
Those who escaped death in battle thanks to E.S. pills were naturally grateful to tears.
Those who never enjoyed the pill's dividends and instead watched opponents surge in power and lose as a result cursed him to no end.
On top of that, the pills' appearance further intensified the brutality of war.
Thus Reinhardt also earned the title of "evil scientist."
On the strength of the E.S. pill's impact, he planted his feet firmly within MADS.
As MADS's renown grew and grew,
they eventually discovered the "Lineage Factor."
The World Government, which had sat unmoved like an angler on the shore, could no longer hold back—and plucked Lu Feld's peach.
The entire MADS team was folded into the Marines' Science Division.
