The iron gates of Liam's estate stretched endlessly upward, disappearing behind thick hedges that screened the property from prying eyes. As our SUV wound up the private drive, I had enough time to question every decision that led me here and rehearse at least three different versions of my escape speech.
But when the vehicle finally stopped and Killian opened my door, I stepped out with manufactured confidence. Like I wasn't about to surrender my independence to a man who remained largely a mystery.
The words he'd spoken earlier echoed in my mind: 'You live where I live. Because you're my wife.'
The authority in his voice shouldn't have sent heat coursing through me, but it did.
Liam already saw me as his wife, though until I signed that contract, I remained merely his guest. His guest who happened to be wearing a diamond ring worth more than most people's annual salary.
