Chapter Four: The Template System

Another screen appeared before Daniel containing all the details about Vi, as well as her skills — all of which were now sealed — and there was an arrow pointing upward indicating that he could unlock only one skill.

Daniel pressed the arrow above Q; it was Vi's most important skill — and he was excited — then he assumed a punching stance (the tip of the glove on his right hand, the one he would punch with, began charging), and the glove grew a deeper bluish tint. After two or three seconds Daniel launched himself, propelled by the gauntlet's charged burst; it hurled him forward in a powerful dash covering about three meters.

After that Daniel felt he wouldn't be able to perform that impressive dash again for a number of seconds — roughly (15 seconds). Daniel thought: (This really is like a game, and also on the screen in front of me my blue mana bar decreased, and the gauge began filling slowly again.)

Then Daniel asked, (Should I deactivate this template now, or what if I stroll down the street?) Luna said: [You can think of the gauntlets disappearing without deactivating the template; that way you can hide the gauntlets as if tools purchased from the shop aren't visible.]

(Really?) Daniel then asked Luna, (So can I keep this template active forever?) Luna replied: [Yes, you can.]

Daniel imagined the gauntlets vanishing from his hands and also the thing on the top of his back, and as he returned to the street and sat on the bench again he said to Luna: (Tell me now how I get the gems and gold coins to buy equipment from the shop.)

Luna began to explain: [Alright, I'll tell you everything you need to know about the system now.]

[First, let's start with currency: in this system there are two types of currency — gems and gold coins. Gems are used to buy different hero templates and you can acquire them by completing the tasks I give you. Gold coins come only from defeating opponents; someone you defeat isn't considered an "opponent" unless they want to kill you or seriously attack and try to harm you — if you defeat such people you'll receive gold coins. Gold coins are used to buy items from the shop or to purchase different skins (appearances) for the template.

Each character template, as you know, has its own skills like the Vi template or the Ashe template. Although you also gain the template's skills, you also acquire its real-world physical capabilities. That's why there is a huge difference in power between different templates. Also, gold coins are awarded according to the power gap between you and the opponent, and whether someone assisted you or not — like in the game — and also who dealt the final blow. Therefore each template has its own gold coins as well; meaning in the Vi template if you defeat someone you will earn gold coins specific to the Vi template only and you cannot use them in the Ashe template.]

[Finally, switching templates: you can switch between different templates easily or cancel a template entirely and be a normal human, but you only have one free template change per day; if you want to do it more than once a day you must use gems earned from quests. If you switch repeatedly now to defeat an enemy with many templates, the more templates you use the fewer gold coins you'll be able to earn at the end of the fight, but the gold coins earned are divided among the templates according to their impact on the enemy.]

[Now let's go to the template's power itself: the template has health points and mana or energy points, physical attack power points, magical attack points, attack speed points, magical defense points, and physical defense points — these are the basic stats for every template. Finally, the critical damage ratio has been removed. You can increase basic stats through the shop by buying whatever items and weapons you want. But item increases won't be the same for every template; the effect of the same item on each template differs depending on the template's real-world strength. In other words, the increase won't be a fixed number of points but a percentage; for example: if you buy Infinity Edge from the shop instead of increasing attack by 65 points it will increase attack by 30%.]

[Also, the effect of these stats is slightly different from the game: first, mana points are what you consume to use your skills. As for health points, the higher they are the less impact an injury has on your life. If someone stabs you in the heart, almost all your health points will drop and only about 1% will remain, which will also fall to zero when your heart stops beating and you die. But if someone stabs you in the foot with the same attack, your health will decrease slightly, by about 5% only. The higher your health points the more resilient your body; so the previous dagger attack to the foot would consume less health — around 2%. Although the injury is the same, the effect and disability resulting from the wound are reduced.

Physical attack power and magical attack points are obvious from their names: the higher they are the stronger your attack. Physical defense points are the body's ability to withstand attacks; in the previous dagger example, if the physical defense is high in the template the attack's effect won't be as big as before — it may only scratch or even have no effect at all. Magical defense points are similar to physical defense but against energy-filled attacks only, such as Thor's lightning or Iron Man's laser strikes.]

[This is a simple explanation of what you need.]

Daniel read what was before him repeatedly, and his thought repeated: (If the Sion template has higher physical power; therefore if I buy Infinity Edge its effect will be greater in that template). Luna replied: [Yes, that's the crux of it.]

He realized he now had many build paths for the Vi template, (If it's the Vi template — then let's buy full AD — what about becoming a tank so I don't die easily?)

Then Daniel asked, (So what quests are available now?) Luna answered: [Main quest: defeat Wilson Fisk — the mayor of New York.] [Side quest: defeat a corrupt cop under Wilson Fisk.] [Side quest 2: defeat a member of the Hell's Kitchen gangs.]

Daniel was surprised by this, (Wilson Fisk is a major villain for Daredevil and The Punisher — and sometimes appears in Spider-Man — but he appears in Marvel after many events, and when I searched Iron Man he didn't exist yet; Tony Stark is still making rockets at the moment and hasn't become Iron Man.)

Luna answered Daniel's inquiry: [This world is Earth-V7 and it is indeed different from what you remember.]

Daniel understood from her, then finally rose from his seat, and his current goal became finding a place to live and his work — for he only had the money in his pocket.
