Chapter 2 - The lie that broke me

I never believed heartbreak could feel this way — when the person you trusted the most, the one you shared your entire world with, ends up being the one who destroys it.

I told him everything. Every dark memory, every scar from my past, every little piece of me that no one else knew. And I truly thought… he was going to be my forever.

But June proved me wrong.

June was brutal. It was my first real taste of high school love — and heartbreak. I finally understood how something that once felt like heaven could also become the reason you stop recognizing yourself.

I fell into a fog I couldn't escape. Depression wrapped around me like a heavy blanket, whispering that I was unwanted, unworthy, and not enough.

Where on earth did I go wrong?

It was a Tuesday afternoon, one of those quiet, slow-burning days. I was lying on my bed, replaying everything over and over in my head — every fight, every message, every word left unsaid.

And then, almost like muscle memory, I opened Instagram.

His chat was still pinned — Tyler.

I started scrolling. Slowly. Painfully.

Every message, every emoji, every "I love you" we had exchanged.

Nothing seemed wrong. Not even a hint of the storm that was coming.

He was the one pulling away — and I was too blinded by love to notice.

How can someone go from texting you every single hour to not even checking on you once a day?

How?

Anger replaced sadness. I started taking screenshots — every sweet thing he'd said, every promise he'd made. If a stranger saw those messages, they'd swear he was the most loyal, loving guy on Earth.

But he wasn't. Not anymore.

And just when I thought the heartbreak couldn't get worse — it did.

Four days later, I got a message from one of his classmates.

Her name was Venelia.

And apparently, she'd been his crush for fourteen years.

Venelia: hey Lizzie what's up??

Lizzie: hey, I'm good. wbu?

Venelia: I heard Tyler broke up with you??? what happened???

Lizzie: honestly, I don't even know. everything was fine, then suddenly he just... changed.

Venelia: umm… I heard you cheated on him?? is that true??

Lizzie: WHAT? that's an awful lie. who told you that nonsense?

Venelia: Tyler did!!

Lizzie: WHAT ON EARTH?

Venelia: yeah… two months back he told me things were getting weak between you two. said you were going out somewhere with another guy or something?

Lizzie: excuse me, what?! that's not true! oh my god, that's so messed up.

Venelia: hey please, don't tell anyone I said this, okay? please don't take my name.

Lizzie: yeah… fine. whatever.

And just like that, my world flipped again.

So now I was not only heartbroken — I was the cheater?

I couldn't even begin to process it. Who on earth was this "another boy"? What on earth was happening?

Did someone tell him something and twist the truth? Did he just… believe it without asking me?

And why her — why tell her of all people, his childhood crush?

The thought made me sick.

It was like being stabbed twice — once for the breakup, and once for the lies.

I cried for days.

I didn't want to see anyone, talk to anyone. My room became my safe place and my prison.

My family thought I was just being moody — they didn't know that I was falling apart inside.

At night, I'd replay everything in my head.

Our first texts.

Our first fight.

Our first kiss.

Every memory still felt so alive, so vivid — like he was still here.

There was a time when I thought, I don't need anyone else. Just him.

Only Tyler.

And now, that same thought haunted me.

Because I wasn't sure I'd ever stop feeling that way.
