Chapter 1 - summer bigins

Hi, my name is Yuki Yamada, and I'm a transfer student. It's been a month since I joined this school, and our first semester just ended last week. From tomorrow, we'll be starting our summer break.

I barely passed the exams, and one of my friends failed the first semester — honestly, I expected that.

"Damn, now I have to study again for my re-exam. I never thought I'd fail in the first semester," said my first friend.

Huh, he never expected it? I hardly ever saw him study.

Watching anime all day doesn't help you pass exams, you actually have to study to pass," said my second friend.

Yeah, somehow, I managed to make two friends. I never expected that, but it's true I've got two friends.

My first friend's name is Himura Sato — my dumb friend who watches anime all day and never studies. Honestly, I'm surprised he even managed to pass the entrance and middle school exams. I guess his luck stat is pretty high.

My second friend's name is Osamu Ryuji — as his name suggests, he's a disciplined guy. He's cool, good-looking, and popular among the girls in our school. He came 2nd in our class and 4th among all sections.

No matter how different they are, they're still my friends.

"Hey, Yuki, which club do you want to join? It's been a month since you transferred, but you still haven't joined one. You should join a club so you can interact with more people," said Ryuji.

"Yeah, yeah! You should join the baseball club, or maybe the volleyball club! Or how about the swimming club—so you can see some hot chicks there! Or join me in the drama club, it'll be fun having you there!" said Sato.

They might be right—I should probably join a club.

But in the baseball and volleyball clubs, everyone's so energetic… I don't think I can match their energy levels. The swimming club sounds nice, but I can't even swim—my dignity would sink on the first day. And drama club? Hmm, not my thing.

"Yuki, what are you thinking? Which club are you joining? I bet it's the swim club!" said Sato.

"No, I don't think so. I'm gonna pass on this for now," I replied.

And with that, our first semester came to an end. From tomorrow, summer break begins.

Those who didn't manage to pass their exams have to come to school during the break for re-exams. Unfortunately, our dumb friend Sato is one of them.

He needed Ryuji's help to study, but he also called me to convince Ryuji. Because among the three of us, Ryuji's definitely the smartest. But convincing him was not going to be easy. Ryuji already told me that every time he and Sato try to study together, Sato ends up watching anime, and the whole day goes to waste. Ryuji had completely lost hope in trying to make him study.

Sato kept trying to convince him, so I had to step in.

I told Ryuji, "Let's just help him, so he can pass and enjoy summer break with us. Otherwise, he'll spend his whole vacation taking re-exams." After a bit of persuasion, Ryuji finally agreed. Later, Sato asked me what I was planning to do during summer break. I didn't really have an answer because my mom makes plans at the last moment. Wherever we go, it's always decided a day before. But I was sure we'd go to my grandparents' house my mother's hometown. So, I told him that. After reaching the train station, we went our separate ways Sato and Ryuji headed home together, and I went back to mine.

When I reached home, I told my mom that I'd passed my exams and wouldn't have to take any re-tests. She looked shocked—probably because she had no hope of me passing.

To be fair, I couldn't blame her. I studied in India before, so this was my first time taking exams in Japan, and the exam pattern here is completely different.

The next morning, I got a call from Sato. He said, "Come to my house to study!"

I wanted to refuse, but somehow, I ended up at his place anyway.

I never thought he'd call me that early in the morning, but apparently, he hadn't slept all night he stayed up finishing an anime called "That Time I Got Reincarnated as the 99th Child of the 98th Emperor of the Kingdom and Got the Cheat Skill of Erasing Anything From Existence Which Made Me So Overpowered…"

I don't even remember the full title. I don't know how he manages to.

So, we started our group study session but only for a few minutes. As expected, Sato went back to watching anime again.

Ryuji noticed, got angry, and turned off the TV.

And that's how our study session actually began.

Watching those two argue and study together… honestly, they're both pretty funny. They've been friends since kindergarten no wonder they act like this. After a while of studying or pretending to study we finally finished one chapter. Sato stretched his arms and said, "Ahhh, I'm starving! Studying makes me hungry. Let's go eat something!"

Ryuji sighed. "You studied for twenty minutes, Sato. That doesn't count."

"Hey, that's still effort! My brain burned at least one calorie!" Sato replied, acting all dramatic.

I laughed. "Fine, let's go. I was getting bored anyway."

So we packed up and went to a small family restaurant near the station. It was one of those cozy places with the smell of fried rice and curry in the air, the kind of place students always hang out at. The moment we entered, Sato ran straight to a corner table and shouted, "Three specials, please!" before even checking the menu.

"You could at least look at what they have," Ryuji said, shaking his head.

"I already know. Their chicken curry is god-tier," Sato said proudly.

I couldn't help but smile watching them argue over food like an old married couple.

When the food came, the atmosphere suddenly changed—silence, just the sound of spoons hitting plates. Even Ryuji, who always tries to act cool, looked like he was enjoying it.

"This is good," I said, taking another bite.

"Of course it is. Trust my taste buds!" Sato grinned.

"Your taste buds also said that instant ramen counts as breakfast, lunch, and dinner," Ryuji replied.

We all laughed. For a moment, everything felt peaceful no exams, no stress, just the sound of our laughter and the clinking of glasses.

When we finished eating, we sat outside the restaurant, watching the sunset. The summer air was warm, and a soft breeze brushed past.

Sato yawned. "Man, this summer's gonna be awesome." Ryuji leaned back on the bench. "Only if you actually pass your re-exam."

"Ah, don't ruin the mood!" Sato groaned.

I looked at both of them and smiled quietly. Somehow, this felt… nice. I had never imagined I'd find friends like these after transferring here.

I guess this summer will be awesome.
