The council chamber had been rearranged since the last time I had been here under duress.
The long table was swapped out for a rounder design, a small yet intentional symbolic gesture that Hale had insisted upon, and I had allowed him to implement, because at times, symbolism held more significance than I was willing to acknowledge.
"We are gathered here to officially acknowledge Kael Group's contribution during the Blind Zone crisis," Hale stated, reading from a prepared speech devoid of his usual condescension. "And to express the council's gratitude, albeit delayed, for leadership that surpassed our expectations given the circumstances."
"Delayed is a kind term," Reyes interjected from beside me. "I would say it's overdue."
"I won't dispute that description," Hale replied, his tone carrying a hint of humility. "The council was mistaken. Time and again. I want that recorded clearly, without softening it for anyone's ease."
