Kenji wasn't too surprised that Mega Sceptile managed to shake off the pressure.
It wasn't that he doubted Gyarados's power, but rather, he refused to believe that Zephyr's Ace Pokémon would lack the courage to even face his Gyarados. If that had been the case, Kenji would have been truly disappointed.

Gyarados roared. Facing the incoming homing leaves, it calmly activated Waterfall, covering its entire body in a rushing veil of water.
Then, it opened its jaws, its fangs radiating a bone-chilling cold.
Ice Fang!!
With a snap of its jaws, Gyarados bit into the water veil surrounding its own body. The cold energy flash-froze the rushing water, turning the fluid shield into solid ice armor.
BANG BANG BANG!!!
The Magical Leaves slammed into the ice armor, creating muffled thuds and chipping away shards of ice, but failing to penetrate.
Once the barrage ended, the ice armor shattered explosively. Gyarados burst forth from the debris, rocketing toward Mega Sceptile.
Gyarados hadn't just been grinding levels; she had spent countless hours refining her moves. Her control over her skills was masterful.
"Scary Face!"
Gyarados roared, her pupils turning blood-red as her expression twisted into a visage of pure nightmare.
Mega Sceptile's pupils shrank. Terror seized its legs, causing them to go weak, and its Speed stat plummeted involuntarily.
Gyarados coiled her body and launched herself like an arrow from a bow. With a terrifying burst of speed, she flew straight at the airborne Mega Sceptile.
Panic flared in Mega Sceptile's heart. Just before Gyarados could make contact, it barely managed to execute a Substitute.
POOF!
Mega Sceptile's image exploded into smoke.
The real body reappeared in a different direction.
Facing the airborne Gyarados, Mega Sceptile didn't hesitate. It extended two vines glowing with pale green light, aiming to grapple the leviathan.
"Giga Drain!!"
The moment the vines touched Gyarados, they began greedily siphoning her stamina, transferring the health back to Mega Sceptile.
"Roar!!!"
"ROARRR!!"
With a deafening bellow from Gyarados, a strange phenomenon occurred. Outside the arena, one of the Poké Balls on Zephyr's belt popped open automatically, emitting a red beam that forcibly sucked Mega Sceptile back inside.
Immediately after, another ball opened, and Shiftry was sent flying back onto the battlefield.
Before Shiftry could even figure out what had happened, Gyarados was already charging at it, roaring in fury.
Shiftry looked up, bewildered.
Greeting it was a massive, thick tail wreathed in terrifyingly powerful water energy.
