Chapter 4 - Davenport Echoes

Elara was sitting by the window in her shop watching outside. She saw the sudents of Davenport mostly pass by the way wearing their sparkling white uniform and some people to their workplaces maybe, who lived their in the long, towering apartments. But just then suddenly she noticed some unfamiliar people outside the cafe. She glanced at them for a while trying to figure out if she knew them. They didn't look like tourists. It felt as if they were searching for someone.

She came near the door of her shop and overheard snippets from locals who passed by her shop just then. "They're from Davenport", the lady said. The other lady added, "Looking for someone, I think." Elara didn't think much about it - Davenport

is just another town.

While she was about to get inside her shop, she heard someone shout, "Rowan-wait!" She turned and saw a man walking as fast as possible. She thought to herself, "Rowan? Silas Rowan?" She looked at the way the man was hurrying but she didn't see

any other person walking fast. Just then a little girl came to buy something so she went in without any other thought.

Silas, who was there on the road, didn't seem to hear at first his name being called. He was immersed in his own thoughts. But then he heard his name being called again loudly. He freezed for a second but then walked away quickly. Suddenly he was out of sight.

At dusk, Elara came at out of her shop and was playing with a puppy before her next shop. Suddenly she overheard comments from a few people who were passing by. They were discussing, "Isn't he from Davenport?" "Something must have

happened there!" "Didn't think he'd come back around here." "I see him everyday in that girl's shop in the morning. and

he's now there again.""What is he up to?"

Hearing these, her curiosity grew. "Is it again the Silas Rowan they are talking about?", she thought. She patted the puppy

and stood up going towards her shop, and thinking, "Who is this mysterius man and why is suddenly his name all around?"

Just then she saw the silent man inside her shop. She was shocked. He visited just once in the morning everyday, but why is he here now?

Suddenly she remembered what the passers-by were speaking. She started piecing stray things together - his silence, the notes, his morning visits and most importantly, him visiting now. She didn't confront him but the mystery, it started geeting deeper. Though she wasn't sure enough but she began to wonder - Did he come here to disappear or to begin again?

She sat at the counter looking away from him. She opened the note he gave her and thought if it meant more than she thought.

Silence felt heavier now - not empty, but full of qustions.
