At that moment, I couldn't stop myself from remembering all those nights when it was just me and Carry.
Children ran fevers constantly, and when I couldn't reach Zain, I'd wind up hauling Carry to the emergency room alone.
I'd lost count of how many times I'd made that journey. Sometimes the weather was exactly like this. I'd get so soaked I couldn't feel my own body.
During those moments, I'd desperately hoped Zain would appear, stand beside me, and tell me, "Don't worry. I'm here."
But he was always swamped with work, and I could never get him on the phone.
So I taught myself to manage everything alone.
But just now, Zain had reached out and grabbed the umbrella I'd been awkwardly balancing under my chin, telling me he'd hold it for me.
It was something I'd dreamed about so many times, and now it was actually happening. But all I felt was this hollow pain in my chest.
