Chapter 13 - Vessel and Stop

The stairway descended for a long time.

The air grew heavier with every step. Blue crystal veins in the walls gradually gave way to pure black stone that seemed to drink the light. The distant roar had settled into a low, continuous vibration that traveled up through the soles of their boots. It felt less like a sound and more like the mountain itself was breathing.

At the bottom of the stairs they entered a vast circular chamber.

The ceiling rose so high it vanished into darkness. In the center of the floor stood a massive circular platform of cracked white stone, surrounded by a deep trench filled with the same liquid shadow they had seen in the Realm of Darkness. Thick black chains rose from the trench and bound something enormous at the center of the platform.

The vessel.

It was humanoid only in the broadest sense. Twice the height of a man, its body looked as if it had been sculpted from living midnight and then imperfectly forced into a shape that could almost pass for a warrior. One arm ended in a blade of pure darkness. The other still wore the remains of ancient elven armor, half-melted into its flesh. A single glowing red core pulsed where a heart should have been, larger and brighter than any they had seen before.

The chains that held it were already breaking. Several links hung loose. Black vines crawled up the remaining chains, eating through the metal with slow patience.

Fury's voice was barely a whisper. "That is no ordinary darkling. That is a failed attempt at creating a body the King of Darkness could inhabit permanently."

Leafa stepped forward, sword rising. "Then we destroy the core before the last chains fall."

The vessel's head turned toward them. Even bound, it moved with terrifying smoothness. The red core flared brighter.

Sekai did not wait.

He pressed the pause button.

The chamber froze. The vessel's half-raised arm locked in place. Black vines stopped mid-crawl. The liquid shadow in the trench became a still, mirror-like surface.

Sekai walked across the frozen air above the trench and landed on the central platform. Up close the vessel was even more unsettling. Its surface constantly shifted in tiny ways, as if the darkness inside was still trying to decide what shape it preferred. He circled it slowly, examining every chain, every crack in the white stone, every weak point in the armor fused to its body.

The core was protected. Layers of dense shadow swirled around it like living armor. Ordinary weapons would never reach it in time once the fight began. He needed a better approach.

He returned to the frozen party and carefully borrowed Leafa's sword again. Then he spent a long stretch of stopped time simply standing in front of Fury and Niña, taking in every detail while they remained locked in their combat stances. When he finished, he returned to the vessel and began the real work.

Using the sword's residual holy edge, he cut through the weakest remaining chains one by one. Each cut took careful force. The metal screamed silently under the blade. He left only three chains intact—just enough to keep the vessel from moving freely when time resumed, but not enough to stop him from reaching the core.

Then he climbed the creature's frozen body, found the densest swirl of shadow protecting the core, and began carving a path inward with slow, precise strokes. It was exhausting work. The darkness resisted even while frozen, trying to close around the blade. He kept cutting until a clear tunnel of open space led straight to the glowing red heart.

He positioned himself at the edge of that tunnel, sword raised for the final strike, and released time.

The chamber exploded into motion.

The vessel roared. The remaining chains snapped under the sudden strain. Black vines whipped outward. Liquid shadow surged up from the trench like a living tide.

Leafa was already moving. Her sword flashed in a wide arc that severed two of the thicker vines. Niña rolled under a sweeping blade-arm and drove both daggers into the creature's knee joint. Fury raised both hands and released a concentrated burst of pure light that forced the surging shadow back into the trench for a critical second.

Sekai did not waste the opening.

He stepped into the tunnel he had carved and drove Leafa's sword straight into the exposed core.

The red light flared once, violently, then shattered.

The vessel's entire body convulsed. Darkness poured out of every crack in its form like blood from a dozen wounds. The remaining chains finally gave way, and the massive shape collapsed inward, folding in on itself until nothing remained but a spreading pool of evaporating shadow and a single cracked fragment of the red core.

Silence returned to the chamber.

Sekai pulled the sword free and handed it back to Leafa without a word. She accepted it slowly, staring at the blade as if she no longer fully recognized it.

Niña exhaled hard. "That… was new."

Fury walked to the edge of the platform and looked down into the trench. The liquid shadow was already beginning to recede, draining back into deeper channels. "The seal is broken, but the source has been destroyed. The labyrinth should begin to stabilize."

A low grinding sound rolled through the stone. High above them, somewhere near the surface, the sealed doors of the labyrinth began to open again.

Sekai checked the timer.

Two days and fourteen hours remained.

He looked at the empty platform where the vessel had been, then at the three women standing with him in the center of the dark.

"We're not done," he said quietly. "The King of Darkness is still out there. And Alicia is still praying."

Leafa sheathed her sword with a sharp, final click. "Then we climb back up. And we keep moving."

They turned toward the stairway that would lead them back to the light.

Behind them, the last traces of the vessel faded into nothing, and the mountain slowly stopped trembling.
