Chapter 9 - Chapter 9

The packhouse was bustling with cheering spirits. Everyone was preparing for the upcoming celebrations. The full moon ceremony was underway, and it was a joyous time for all werewolves. Felix stood on the terrace of the house looking outside. It was yet another ceremony he would have to go through without his mate. Every year he would be eager to get involved and celebrate in hopes that it would appease the Goddess, and he would finally meet his mate, but it never happened. He stopped feeling excited about it altogether. It was just another day of constant anguish and disappointment.

What surprised him was seeing Mercedes helping out the others with setting things up. Of course, she was with Crystal, but the smile was plastered on her face while she was busy. A ray of sunshine that lit up any gloomy day. Of course, he would not admit it to anyone, but he kinda likes her. He kept an eye on her, but not in a creepy way, just in an "I hope you don't do something stupid" way. When he first met Mercedes, he thought she would be erratic because of her recent discovery. Many humans don't take supernatural existences well. Most of them go insane because no one will believe them when they tell them what they have witnessed.

Even though it may be so, others believe in myths or legends, and they try to find out what if it is true. And that becomes dangerous for both parties. Sometimes other things should be left unknown.

In the past, humans who ventured into the forest have come so close to finding out about the supernatural realm. There was unrest between the species in range because of the quest for power. Werewolves were the supreme species at that time because of the great power vested in them by the Moon Goddess. The white wolves are covered in golden ancient runes. Turns out that great power can be a blessing and a curse at the same time. Even though they were powerful, they still had weaknesses that were a danger to them and the rest of the realm. Their power was a force to be reckoned with, but in the wrong hands, it would be a calamity for the world.

A powerful sorcerer called Drakoen has evil ambitions. He was obsessed with powerful things, and he possessed them at his will. For centuries, he aimed to become more powerful enough to be able to bring the world to its knees. He was not the only one. Many have tried, but they were not as strong as he was, so he triumphed over them. The last straw was when he came after the werewolves. With their powers combined, he would actually come to take over the world. But the werewolves were not about to let that happen. They made a big decision that came with the risk of extinction of the werewolves. They figured it was the only thing they could do or there wouldn't be anything left if Drakoen achieved his goal.

For that, they decided to burn themselves on the sacred grounds of Alvira. The highest temple werewolves used to worship the Goddess of their creation. They burned and the only thing that was left was ashes.

It was a defining moment in the supernatural world and, for a while, it seemed like the werewolf lineage was lost in time. But later, the Moon Goddess acknowledged their greatest sacrifice by not letting the power bestowed on them end up in the hands of a homicidal maniac. A new generation of werewolves was created. Without the burden of great power. They had the basic abilities of a werewolf without mysticism. Since then, there has never been a white wolf born in time.

The full moon festival was to pay tribute to the Moon Goddess and the sacrifice of the white wolves. It was a special day when werewolves put aside their discrepancies and all that sets them apart to unite and celebrate their lives.

With a heavy heart, he turned away from the cheerful scene and went back to his room. He threw himself on his bed and started on the ceiling. He didn't know whether to be angry, happy, or sad. He felt more lonely than ever. His wolf was not even talking to him anymore. His name was Roland. Sadness pushed them away from each other even though they were one. Felix couldn't be angry with him either, because he understood what he was going through. Roland appears when Felix is in trouble and then does not stick around. He retreats to the back of his mind.

"Roland!" he said. He was trying to get in contact with him. He needed him today, but he was not holding his breath. " Roland... please" he concentrated hard on conjuring him, but he got nothing back. He released a sigh of defeat. It was of no use. When he seemed he had given up, it happened. He responded to him. ." What do you want?"

A flush of relief morphed on his face. " Really? Is that what you have to say after constantly disappearing from me," he chuckled humorlessly.

" I'm sorry," Roland responded in shame.

" I'm sorry too. It was my duty to find our mate, but I failed. I failed us..." his voice cracked at the end.

" What are you saying, Felix? It's not your fault, not mine. It's just that fate is not favoring us at the moment and I took it harder than I should. We should have stuck together and got through it without shutting each other out. I'm back now, and I am not going to let you be alone anymore."

There was a moment of silence between them before Felix spoke up. " Do you think we will ever find her?"

" What if we are looking at this the wrong way?" Roland proclaimed. Felix was confused so he asked," What do you mean by that?"

" I mean what if it's not she, it's a he. And what if he or she is not one of us? They could be humans, vampires, dragons, fairies, or any other species."

Felix chuckled. " I get what you are saying, but not the homosexual part. I am straight, so it's definitely a 'she' that we are looking for among those variations. "

" Yeah, you are right. I said that out of the place."

" I get it. It was just a moment of desperation. But if we stick together this time, we can find her. We will find our mate sooner rather than later. I promise you," Felix declared with determination.
