Previously on From Tomboy to Temptation:
Ryker's uncle has escalated his schemes, targeting both Ryker and Mia. The tension in the office is thick, their closeness forbidden yet irresistible. Trust and danger intertwine, and every move feels like a calculated gamble.
---
The city had gone to sleep, but the lights of Calderis Tower burned bright. Inside, Ryker paced his office, the hum of the air conditioning doing little to soothe the gnawing tension in his chest. Mia had left hours ago, but he couldn't shake the feeling that danger was crawling closer with every passing second.
A soft ping echoed from his laptop. An encrypted message, anonymous, blinking ominously on the screen:
> Tonight. Be alone. Or risk losing everything.
Ryker's jaw clenched. He knew immediately who it was. His uncle had orchestrated it — a trap designed to lure him out, but this time, there was no way to fight it alone.
He reached for his phone. A single call to Mia. But her voicemail picked up.
Damn it, he muttered.
---
Meanwhile, Mia was halfway home, the rain from earlier evening leaving slick streets under the city lights. Her phone vibrated — a text from Ryker:
> Stay inside tonight. Do not go out. Trust me.
She frowned, tension coiling in her stomach. Something in the words, the urgency… it wasn't just precaution. It was warning.
And yet, instinct drew her back toward the tower. She couldn't just sit and wait. Something told her that whatever was coming tonight, she had to face it — with him.
---
Back at Calderis Tower, Ryker readied himself. Black jacket, phone silent, a concealed earpiece in place. He knew every move in this city's grid, every exit and entry. Yet the trap wasn't just physical — it was psychological.
The elevator doors opened to an empty lobby. Perfectly quiet. He stepped out, senses alert. Shadows stretched along the polished floors, flickering from the faint security lights.
Then, a soft click — the sound of a door closing behind him.
He spun around, heart racing. Not fast enough.
A figure emerged from the shadows: his uncle, smirking, perfectly composed in his tailored suit. "Ryker," he said, voice smooth, dangerous. "You really shouldn't have ignored my warnings."
Ryker's lips pressed into a thin line. "And you shouldn't be here. Not like this."
His uncle's grin widened. "But it's always been like this, hasn't it? You can't resist playing the hero — especially when someone's involved."
Ryker's eyes narrowed, scanning the room, calculating. "Mia isn't part of this."
"Oh, but she is," his uncle said, stepping closer. "And now, she will be. Or she disappears."
---
Mia's pulse quickened as she reached the tower. Her instincts screamed at her to turn back, but she pushed forward, creeping through the side entrance Ryker had once shown her. A shadow shifted near the glass doors.
Before she could react, a hand clamped over her mouth, spinning her around. She struggled, but the grip was iron-strong.
"Shh… calm," a familiar voice whispered.
Ryker.
Relief and adrenaline collided as he released her slowly, scanning the area. "You shouldn't have come," he growled. "It's a trap."
"I told you I can't just sit home," she shot back, hands trembling but eyes fierce. "If we're in this together, I'm in it fully."
He stared at her, conflicted, desire and frustration warring in his gaze. "Fine," he muttered. "But stay behind me. One wrong step, and—"
Before he could finish, the lights flickered and went out, plunging them into darkness.
---
From the shadows, his uncle's agents emerged, silent and precise. Ryker moved instinctively, pulling Mia behind him. Hands gripping her waist briefly, they dashed down the hallway, footsteps echoing ominously.
A sudden shove sent one of the agents sprawling. Ryker's fists moved with controlled precision, a dance of power and desperation. Mia stayed close, heart pounding, adrenaline sharpening her senses.
"Ryker!" she hissed, ducking a swing aimed at her. "They're fast!"
"I know," he growled, spinning, catching an arm, twisting it, neutralizing the threat. "Stay with me. Trust me — completely."
The words were both command and confession, and Mia's stomach fluttered despite the danger. She nodded, gripping his arm, letting him guide her through the shadows.
---
They reached the emergency stairwell. Ryker's phone buzzed again — a video message from his uncle:
> Look around you. Every exit is watched. Every move, predicted. The question is… will you save her or lose everything you care about?
Ryker's teeth clenched. "He's obsessed," he muttered. "Obsessed with control. Obsessed with fear. Obsessed with me."
Mia's hand found his, gripping tightly. "Then let him try. We're smarter than him. Together."
His gaze softened momentarily. "You keep saying that, and yet every time, I feel how real the danger is. How real my feelings for you are. How much I'm willing to risk."
Before she could respond, a sudden shadow moved down the stairwell. They froze. Two agents, blocking the exit.
Ryker tightened his grip on Mia's hand, leading her toward an emergency ladder. "Up. Now."
The climb was perilous, metal slippery, rain dripping from above. Mia's heart threatened to leap from her chest, and yet Ryker stayed steady, his presence anchoring her. Every brush of his hand, every close movement, electrified the space between them.
At the top, the city stretched beneath them, neon and rain blending into a chaotic blur. They had escaped — for now.
---
But Ryker's uncle wasn't finished. A voice echoed over a hidden earpiece in Ryker's jacket:
> Not bad… but the game is only beginning. You can run, Ryker, but you can't hide. And neither can she.
Ryker's jaw tightened. "Then we fight. No more running."
Mia's gaze met his, unwavering. "Together?"
"Together," he confirmed, pulling her close for a heartbeat that was impossibly long, their foreheads nearly touching, breaths mingling. The tension was unbearable, magnetic, a promise of more to come.
As the rain pattered against the rooftop, Mia realized one thing with crystal clarity: every danger, every shadow, only drew them closer.
And Ryker? He realized something even more dangerous: he couldn't protect her without losing himself in the process.
