"Where have you been?" The booming, angry voice of her father reverberated across the room as soon as Emily opened the door to their house.
Instantly, her muscles grew rigid, her hand froze on the doorknob, and her feet stood stock still by the front door. Her entire body went numb as fear clutched her heart in an iron grip, while she anxiously anticipated what was soon to come.
It was like watching a ticking time bomb as the seconds ran out. She knew it was about to explode, but all she could do was stand still. There was nowhere to run, no place to hide, and no way to escape.
"You think you can just go anywhere you like just because we're not around." Her mother's voice echoed in the other room.
Although Emily could not see her mother from where she stood, she could tell how furious she was from the tone of her voice. If she had a choice, she would definitely run and hide. But that would only prolong the inevitable.
