Chapter 1 - Rocks D. Xebec (skip)

Rocks D. Xebec,[4] born Davy D. Xebec[2] and commonly known as simply Rocks,[1] was a descendant of the near-extinct Davy Family,[2] the captain of the legendary Rocks Pirates,[1] and the father of Marshall D. Teach, one of the current Four Emperors.[3] His goal in life was to be the King of the World (世界の王, Sekai no Ō?).

He was a prominent figure four decades ago, before the Pirate King Gol D. Roger came into power, as he had assembled one of the strongest and most infamous pirate crews in history.[5][1] He was ultimately defeated during the God Valley Incident by an alliance formed by Monkey D. Garp and Roger, earning Garp the epithet "Hero of the Marines".[1]

Appearance

Four decades ago, Rocks appeared as a tall man, but more normally proportioned in comparison to some of his huge (albeit not giant-sized) crewmates. He had an unruly two-toned spiky hair, both dark and bright, with a thin strand falling over the right side of his face and a lightning bolt-shaped tattoo running alongside his left eye. Overall, Rocks' facial features greatly resembled those of his son, Marshall D. Teach, including a bulbous nose, prominent lipped mouth, and dark stubble that grows into a beard at the chin, but with a full set of teeth unlike Teach's.[3] He had slanted eyes and a thick neck. Although spotting a large physique like Teach, Rocks had more visible definition and development to his muscles.

Rocks' main outfit appeared to have consisted of a high-collared sailor's coat with fringed epaulettes, plus a buttoned shoulder belt. He kept his chest bare and wore earrings.[1]

Personality

Rocks was an extremely ambitious, sadistic, and destructive man, not caring who he attacked or killed as long as he could satisfy his personal desires, as he demonstrated by leading his crew to spread chaos and destruction across the seas during his reign. Rocks was extremely cruel even to children, as he utterly refused to take a young giant Loki out to sea with him, not out of concern for the child's safety but because he didn't want to be bothered with a child on his ship, and when Loki challenged him to a duel, he savagely defeated the boy and left a blade impaled into him.[6] Also, when Rocks and his subordinates first arrived on Elbaph, Rocks did not hesitate to violently injure Loki just to give Harald a reason to immediately return to Elbaph.

Rocks' dream was to become the "King of the World", and he attacked many locations and left mass destruction in his wake to assert his dominance believing that no one can rule the world forever. He was also very curious about the secrets that the World Government had kept hidden and are considered taboo, resulting in him dabbling in many forbidden subjects.[1] Rocks was also one of the very few people in the history of the world to learn of the existence of Imu.[7] According to Whitebeard, Rocks was rather careless in his pursuits, commonly losing sight of the tasks at hand and going off on his own.[8] According to Rocks himself, he was not the type of person who would take "no" as an answer.[3]

When Rocks confronted Imu, he claimed to be a "worshipper of Davy Jones", who in fact happened to be his ancestor.[7] As a self-proclaimed Davy Jonesian pirate, Rocks repeatedly engaged and partook in the pirate tradition of Davy Back Fights, using said fights to attack and recruit numerous pirates into his crew, in a manner similar to the pirate Foxy. Unlike Foxy, however, it seems as though Rocks cared more about quality than quantity when it came to his use of the Davy Back Fight, as Rocks took his time building his crew with numerous high-profile and powerful pirates, scoundrels, and outlaws before ultimately creating his infamous pirate crew.[9]

Despite his generally serious demeanor, Rocks was also capable of having comedy moments, being one of the many men who were lovestruck by Shakuyaku after she opened a bar on Hachinosu. Rocks also cared for those he genuinely respected, such as when he angrily kicked and threatened Kaidou for suggesting they forcibly subdue Harald and the giants of Elbaph, indicating that the latter was one of the few people Rocks considered a friend.[10]

Rocks was also a loving father and husband. In fear of what could happen to his family due to their ties to the Davy Family, as well his extended criminal record, he chose to send them back to his hometown of God Valley for protection. Rocks was willing to put his family's well-being above his own, even openly declaring he was content to die if his wife and son managed to survive. Like his son Teach, Rocks appeared to deeply believe in the workings of fate, which also contributed to his apparent acceptance of an eventual death.

Like many other characters, Rocks has a unique laugh: "Vohahahahahaha!".[11]

Davy D. Jones

Known more commonly as the mythical pirate "Davy Jones", he is the ancestor of the Davy Family that is highly persecuted by the World Government and more specifically, the World Nobles. Despite being the source of his family's threat by the government, Rocks holds nothing but the upmost respect for his ancestor. He went as far as to present himself as a worshipper of Davy Jones and would constantly partake in the pirate's game dedicated to his distant ancestor, the Davy Back Fight, in order to build his crew and become a pirate similar to him.

Despite his admiration for his ancestor, Rocks is smart enough to know that being part of his bloodline would make him a top-priority target for death by the World Government and thus changed his real name from Davy D. Xebec to Rocks D. Xebec in order to ensure nobody would learn of his connection to the family. However, Rocks shows no shame for being Davy Jones' descendant and instead takes it in great stride, presumably being his primary reason for becoming a pirate himself due to having heard the legends about Jones, given that he is said to act in a similar manner to how Jones did during his time as a pirate cursed by the devil for his obsessive greed and the fact that Rocks sought to drag down the World Government and become the King of the World.

Eris

At some point, Rocks would meet a woman named Eris would eventually become his wife. However, this was kept secret from everyone, even from his own crew. Despite this, Rocks seemed very happy with his marriage to Eris despite his piracy career forcing him to be away from her for so long, as Shakuyaku noticed seeing how content Rocks was following the birth of his son, she wondered if he had found someone else to where he no longer seemed to obsess over her like almost every other man in her presence.

During the God Valley Incident, Rocks prioritized finding Eris and their child so that the two of them could escape the World Nobles' grasp, with him even ignoring Shakky's attempted enslavement which was the main cause of the Roger Pirates and most of his own crew's reason for coming to God Valley. In his talk with Harald before the incident, he confessed that as long as Eris and their son could make it out alive, he considered everything else, his own life included, to be a secondary concern, showcasing his profound love and faith to his wife.

Marshall D. Teach

Rocks was shown to be a surprisingly good father to his son, as despite his natural viciousness to almost everyone he meets and lack of comraderie between him and his crew, he was shown to be very content following the birth of his son when he and the Rocks Pirates were visiting Shakky's bar on Hachinosu, with Buckingham Stussy realizing his pleasant attitude was the same of that of a new father, while Shakky and the others all believed it to be because he simply found a woman.

Knowing full well that the World Government would target his son for death due to being a member of Davy D. Jones' bloodline, Rocks immediately instructed his wife Eris to take their son to his homeland of God Valley to hide there with the rest of the Davy Family. Upon learning that the government chose God Valley to be the next unaffiliated country for their Native Hunting Competition, he was quick to put the pieces together that their real reason was in order to exterminate the Davy bloodline. This caused him to drop everything to go there and ensure his son's safety, with his crew luckily also wanting to go because of learning that Shakky had been kidnapped as the event's major prize, as he casually told Harald that as long as he got his son and wife out alive, nothing else (including his life) mattered, showing that Rocks valued Teach over even his goal of becoming the King of the World.

Allies

Crew

Despite being the captain of the crew, and even if they recognized his strength, in general, Rocks was not respected at all among his subordinates.[1] While they did go along with his plans and followed his orders in battle, they made it plenty clear that they were only out for themselves and only aligned with Rocks for their own benefit. Buckingham Stussy explained that the only reason they were with Rocks was solely because their plans could bring them great fortune and fame.

Charlotte Linlin considered him to be untrustworthy and "good-for-nothing".[12] Shiki laughed at the notion of caring about Rocks' life, stating to Harald that whether he lived or died was completely irrelevant to either of them. Whitebeard was disgusted by his cruelty towards even children, mentioning having bad experiences with him and his crew.[13][6] Kaidou respected his strength, recognizing Rocks as one of the few capable of challenging him in combat, but in general, they had a hostile relationship.[14] Rocks himself did not seem to care much for his crew as the members were constantly arguing and killing each other, Rocks also did not hesitate to attack or threaten any of his crew members if they did or said something that angered him, and was openly declared that they could leave if they did not agree with his plan.[15]

Overall, Rocks' relationship with his crew closely resembled Marshall D. Teach's relationship with his own crew; pirates who had no true comraderie and were simply united by their alignment of interests.

Enemies

World Government

Since Rocks had the ambition to become the "King of the World", he was naturally opposed to the World Government as the current globe-ruling regime, including the Celestial Dragons, who were the focus of his attacks during the God Valley Incident.

Rocks' actions were destructive and anarchic enough that the government considered him akin to a terrorist, meaning many of his feats were not properly recorded in history, causing Rocks to eventually fade from public consciousness save the memory of some veteran Marines and the former members of his crew.[1]

Imu

Rocks Meets Imu

Rocks invades Imu's Room of Flowers.

Most notably among his World Government enemies, is the true King of the World, Imu. Rocks accomplished a feat that had not been seen before or since: invading Imu's inner sanctum, the Room of Flowers. Rocks kidnapped five kings attending the Levely that year and attempted to use them as a bargaining chip, but Imu simply did not care and paid him no mind. While there, Rocks cautiously realized there was not anything he could do to Imu but menacingly declared that he would one day return, likely to dethrone Imu once and for all, though this would not be fulfilled following the fall of the Rocks Pirates at God Valley and Rocks' own disappearance.[7]

Garp and Roger

Vice Admiral Monkey D. Garp and Gol D. Roger of the Roger Pirates were known to have joined forces to stop the Rocks Pirates during the God Valley Incident. That said, Garp is not fond of recounting this story despite its role in solidifying his reputation as a hero, since it involved him allying with a pirate and protecting World Nobles and the fact that he only received said reputation because the government suppressed the fact of Roger's involvement.[1] Rocks appeared to be familiar enough with Garp to know the latter's rebellious dislike toward the World Government, claiming he would've been better off being a pirate, showing respect for his abilities.

Others

Harald

Rocks met Harald when the giant king snuck into the Levely 56 years ago. After this meeting, Rocks developed an interest in Harald and repeatedly tried to recruit him, though he was refused every time on the grounds that it would sour whatever friendly relationship Elbaph had secured with the other countries should its king choose to suborned himself to a known criminal. Rocks was confident that he could get Harald to join his crew and desired for him to eat Elbaph's legendary Devil Fruit, seeing him and Elbaph as a whole as the key to taking down the Holy Land, showing he had great respect for the king's abilities in combat and the strength of the giants.

Interestingly, when Kaidou suggested Rocks forcibly submit Harald to his rule, Rocks angrily attacked him for it, claiming that he considered Harald a friend, and always went back to Elbaph to drink and try to invite him into his crew, no matter how many times Harald turned down his offer.[16] After Harald accepted the Five Elder's offer to kill him in exchange for joining the World Government, which led to another fight between the two, Rocks tried to convince Harald that the World Government was only using him, but his attempts fell on deaf ears. Ultimately Rocks could not bring himself to kill Harald, but he ended his friendship with him and announced he was done trying to recruit the giant king.[17]

Rocks and Harald would meet for the last time near God Valley, under the monitoring of the World Government. In spite of their broken friendship, Rocks trusted Harald enough to tell him his real name during a drinking session, something he had not shared with anyone in his own crew. Being understanding of Rocks' position and desire to save his family at God Valley, Harald refused to help the Rocks Pirates directly but still allowed them to sail away unobstructed.

Loki

Rocks Loki Defeat

Rocks brutally defeats a young Loki.

Rocks met Loki when the giant prince was only 15 years old. At first, Loki underestimated Rocks and picked a fight with him only to be seriously injured. After Rocks proclaimed his ambition toward Harald to entice him to join his crew, Loki found his sense of purposes through his charisma and deeply idolized Rocks ever since. Despite Loki idolizing him and requesting to join his crew, Rocks rejected him and savagely beat Loki with a bladed weapon when the prince demanded a fight.[6]

In spite of all the cruel and abusive treatment Loki received from Rocks, he still idolizes and admires him in the present, lamenting that he was "born in the wrong era" since he could have joined the Rocks Pirates if he was not just a kid at the time.

Abilities and Powers

Rocks was one of the most powerful pirates in history, renowned for leading a crew composed of exceptionally strong pirates, many of whom had clashing personalities and little camaraderie. After the crew's dissolution, several of its members rose to great infamy; "Whitebeard" Edward Newgate, "Big Mom" Charlotte Linlin, and "Kaidou of the Beasts" came to constitute three quarters of the original Four Emperors, widely regarded as the strongest pirate crews in the world during the Great Pirate Era. Another prominent member, the "Golden Lion" Shiki, would become a rival to Roger and Whitebeard after Rocks' death, while Captain John, another member, would also go on to be infamous for his legendary treasure that has also been sought after.[1]

Physical Abilities

Luffy Among Legends

Kaidou envisions Xebec behind Luffy alongside other powerful pirates.

Rocks possessed an immense level of superhuman strength. He was renowned for easily killing a Marine Admiral,[3] single-handedly destroying one of the Gates of Justice,[18] and dominating countless Davy Back Fights to recruit powerful individuals such as Whitebeard, Shiki, and Big Mom.[9] He was even regarded by some as the first and most formidable rival of the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger—surpassing even the challenge later posed by his own subordinate, Edward Newgate, who came to be renowned as the "Strongest Man in the World".[19] He was so fearsome, it took the efforts of both Roger and Monkey D. Garp working together to finally defeat him, and he clashed equally with the giant King Harald on multiple occasions. Rocks' defeat was also what caused Garp to become a legend and to be known as the "Hero of the Marines", showing how much of a threat the World Government considered him to be.[1] Kaidou, who by the present has come to be called the world's "Strongest Creature", included Xebec when he listed a very small number of notable figures that were worthy to stand against him in battle, alongside Kouzuki Oden, Shanks, Newgate, and Roger. [20] Rocks proved capable of defeating Saint Garling and the Holy Knights with only moderate difficulty despite their immortality and regenerative abilities. Even when Roger was sailing the seas as a notorious pirate, the years of the Rocks Pirates' dominance and notoriety were referred to as the "Era Of Rocks".

Intelligence

Aside from raw strength, Rocks seemed to be a very intelligent and knowledgeable man; through studying many subjects that were considered taboo, he was able to unravel many of the World Government's secrets, which led the Government to decide to erase his name from history following his defeat.[1] Among the secrets he learned was the existence of Imu, the secret ruler of the world.[7] Rocks also showed himself to be extremely cunning and opportunistic, having stolen the Celestial Dragons' Heavenly Tribute to fund his piracy career.[18]

Swordsmanship

Rocks was shown to be a tremendously powerful swordsman whose strikes were famous for blasting away whatever he struck as though they were hit by a gigantic hammer or cannonball.[11] When clashing swords with King Harald of Elbaph, who had Ancient Giant blood and was noted to be a great warrior by Elbaph's standards, the two fighters blasted away everyone in their vicinity up to five kilometers away.[21] With a swing of his sword he could blast a hole straight through Marine Battleships.[22]

Rocks was one of the few people in the world known to possess Supreme King Haki, and what's more he was one of the very few capable of infusing it into his sword to drastically increase the power of his strikes.[21]

Weapons

Rocks mostly wielded a sword which he could infuse with his Supreme King Haki.[1] Rocks was also versatile with other weapons such as an axe and firearms which he used to win Davy Back Fights.[9] He also used a pistol when he invaded the Levely and confronted Imu.[23]

History

Biography

Xebec was born on God Valley to the Davy Family, descendants of the legendary pirate Davy D. Jones. Because of the family's persecution by the World Government, Xebec hid his lineage behind the alias "Rocks D. Xebec".[2]

Rocks & Harald Clash

Rocks clashes with Harald at Mary Geoise.

56 years ago, Rocks was present at the Levely, during which he fatally wounded a Marine Admiral and was suspected of kidnapping five kings. Imu, the secret ruler, was unconcerned by the events, until Rocks revealed himself within their Room of Flowers. Rocks claimed to be a pirate, before declaring his intentions to return one day, and then fled the castle. At the same time, King Harald of Elbaph, who had snuck into the Levely for his own reasons, was under threat of imprisonment due to being suspected of kidnapping the kings in Rocks' place. The two eventually crossed paths, before clashing blades, knocking away everyone in a 5-kilometer radius. After short introductions, Rocks ordered Harald to assist in his escape. While running, Rocks expressed his intent to meet Harald again, should they survive, however Harald did not feel the same way. They eventually made it to the edge of the Red Line, where Harald jumped off, allowing the two to successfully escape. As a result of the incident, Rocks received a large bounty from the World Government.

Rocks Davy Back Fighting

Rocks builds his crew using the Davy Back Fight.

Sometime later, Rocks attacked a ship holding the Heavenly Tribute and destroyed one of the Gates of Justice, before fleeing. He used the funds to support his pirate activities, which from then on were directed at everyone on the ocean, rather than just the World Government. In the process of his attacks on fellow pirates, Rocks utilized the Davy Back Fight, allowing him to build his crew with some of the most powerful up-and-coming individuals on the sea, including Edward Newgate, Shiki, Buckingham Stussy, Don Marlon, Ochoku, and Ganzui.[24]

Rocks Severely Wounds Loki

Rocks wounds Loki, in a ploy to force Harald's early return.

48 years ago, the group arrived on Elbaph in search of Harald. After landing, they immediately met Loki.[3] After finding out that Loki was Harald's son, and that Harald was out on a voyage, Rocks ordered the young prince to pretend to be hurt, as a deceptive way to force the king's return. Loki's pride as a warrior naturally made him oppose such a plan, but Rocks responded by actually wounding him, forcing Loki to play along anyway. Upon Harald's return, Rocks revealed that he wanted Harald to join his crew, with the overall goal of recruiting every giant on Elbaph as well. Given his wise nature, Harald was quick to reject Rocks' offer, on the grounds that it would undo all of his diplomatic efforts. Rocks scoffed at Harald's concerns, pointing out that the giants were well-known for their bloodlust, and that they would never truly be capable of what Harald had already accomplished. Rocks went on to reveal that he had cut a deal with the World Government: he would invade and conquer Hachinosu. The trick in his plan was that he planned to keep the island afterward, rather than return it, and convert it into a paradise for pirates. Rocks proudly stated that his life was only just beginning, and that he'd defeat the Marines, bring down the World Government, and then become King of the World. Harald was, of course, skeptical, as Rocks was essentially proposing a fight against the whole world.[25]

Rocks Pirates Invade Hachinosu

Rocks enacting his plan to take over Hachinosu.

Over the next four years, Rocks continued to pester Harald with requests about joining, only to be rejected every time. Conversely, Loki became enamored by Rocks' ambitions, and made his own requests to join Rocks' crew. On one occasion, Rocks scoffed at the request, but was forced to fight when Loki refused to back down. Rocks ended up brutally defeating Loki, leading to Newgate criticizing him.[6] 44 years ago,[26] Rocks had emassed enough powerful crewmates to finally mount his invasion of Hachinosu. After their success, Rocks officially established the Rocks Pirates.[1][27]

Rocks Leads His Crew

Rocks rallies his crew.

Several months later, to get a better view of his island, Rocks blew out two holes in the skull-shaped rock on Hachinosu, giving it its distinct Jolly Roger-like appearance. He then turned to his crew and mentioned that he had a goal to acquire two Devil Fruits, one of which was on Elbaph, and would require Harald to fully utilize its power. His crewmates assumed he was referring to the Galleila, although without Harald, such powerful giants would not be able to be controlled, hence the need for the king of Elbaph. When Kaidou chimed in about simply forcing Harald to comply, Rocks promptly attacked him for his disrespect, calling Harald his dear and personal friend. After getting the situation under control, Rocks rallied his new crew, informing them that Elbaph was their key to taking down the World Government. He declared that if they were to continue following him, he would take them all the way to the end of the world.[28]

Rocks Marine Encounter

Rocks prepares to battle the Marines at Foot Colony.

And so, they set out to do so. Over the next two years, Rocks and his crew brought hell to the world as they pillaged many islands across the seas. They mounted 16 raids, sunk 76 individual ships, destroyed 14 ports and 5 towns, and even brought down an entire nation. Despite Roger's activities at the time, their actions led to the era commonly seeing Rocks' name applied to it. In one incident, they raided Foot Colony, a temple of the International Philanthropy Federation. While his crewmates bickered and attempted to kill each other during the robbery, Rocks kept watch on the coastline as various Marine ships appeared. In the ensuing battle, the Marine force was completely wiped out.

Harald & Rocks Meet At Idas

Rocks meets with Harald at Ida's bar.

Sometime later, Rocks returned to Elbaph once again to see his old friend Harald once again. Harald had recently been involved in his own international incident after saving the residents of a non-affiliated nation to the World Government, leading to all his previously-peaceful actions being seen as a ploy for an evil plot of some sort. Rocks laughed at Harald's failings and attempts to rectify himself, reminding him that the World Government would never accept the giants, and they would be better off joining him. Harald persisted in his beliefs, having shaved his head as a way to show his peaceful intentions, but remarked that Garp had laughed at him for it as well. Rocks stated his belief that Garp hated the World Government as well, and would do far better as a pirate. Harald once again shrugged off Rocks' attempts at persuasion reminding him that while there may be a few corrupt individuals, the average Marine helped more people than they hurt. With Harald denying Rocks' repeated requests, Rocks turned to Ida and asked her to convince him, but was met with a polite rejection.

By 42 years ago, Shakuyaku quit her position as captain of the Kuja Pirates. She made her way to Hachinosu, where she was dutifully greeted by every pirate present. Rocks eventually emerged to see what the commotion was and was lovestruck when he found out Shakky had opened her own bar and intended to live on Hachinosu.[29]

Around 40 years ago, Rocks married Eris and fathered a son with her. To protect them, he sent them to live on God Valley with others of the Davy Family.[2] While Rocks was visiting Shakky's bar, Shakky, Linlin, and Stussy noticed his good mood and correctly intuited that he had fallen in love and had a child, though he attempted to deny it. Their conversation was interrupted by the unexpected arrival of Gol D. Roger and his crew, who had come to find and take Shakky out to sea. Rocks angrily reminded Roger that Hachinosu was under his rule, but Roger countered by mentioning that Shakky forbade fighting in her bar, so Rocks would have to accept it.

Rocks Battles Harald

Rocks duels Harald.

At some point afterward, during one of his usual stops in Elbaph, Rocks was attacked by Harald. As it turned out, the Five Elders offered Elbaph a place in the World Government, provided that they kill Rocks, a deal that Harald begrudgingly accepted. Despite that, the duel was evenly matched, with Rocks holding his own. While fighting, Rocks demanded to know why Harald would willingly make himself a puppet of the World Government and pointed out that they only saw the giants as military assets, contrary to the peaceful nation Harald wanted to establish. Harald countered by declaring that Rocks was ignorant of Elbaph's history, and that, by joining the government, they could begin the process of repairing their violent reputation. After more scuffling, Rocks angrily told Harald that they were no longer friends, and that he would never again offer Harald a spot in his crew.[30]

39 years ago, Shakky was abducted from Hachinosu, which greatly angered Rocks. A year later, he learned that the Native Hunting Competition was going to take place on God Valley and that Shakky was one of the prizes. With others in his crew interested in recovering Shakky and collecting Devil Fruits, Rocks declared that they would go and steal the prizes for themselves. Along the way, they were confronted by Harald and his ship of giants, who had been enlisted by the World Government to stop the Rocks Pirates from interfering. When Harald mentioned that a World Government ship was monitoring them, Rocks criticized the giant for continuing to serve the government but asked to speak with Harald in private. Rocks revealed to Harald his true name and lineage, as well as his true motivation for going to God Valley: to rescue his wife and son. Harald questioned if the World Government targeted the island to draw Rocks into a trap, to which Rocks countered that with the World Nobles on the island, they would not want Rocks there. Rocks then asked Harald to aid him, but the giant refused and threatened to sink Rocks' ship. However, in the ensuing fight, Harald ordered his men not to fight back, so the Rocks Pirates heavily damaged the giants' ship and continued on to God Valley.[31]

Rocks And Eris Fleeing Demons

Rocks flees with Eris from the Knights of God.

Rocks was eventually able to reach his wife, son, and a few other members of the Davy Family, but not before having an unfortunate run-in with the Knights of God. Rocks was forced to fight to protect his family, some of which were somehow converted into demons, who promptly turned against him. While fleeing, Eris refused to be protected further, and demanded that they split up so that Rocks could fight at his full strength. Rocks reminded her of the persecution she would face if caught, but Eris was undeterred, and slipped away. She assured Rocks that she and Teach would not suffer if caught, and if all three of them were to survive, they would meet up again on Lulusia. With no reasons left to hold back, Rocks turned around to face the Knights of God. Even alone, Rocks was able to hold his ground and successfully fight the Knights and their demons off. Eventually, he was joined by Newgate, who wished to help as a friend, and Kaidou, who simply wanted to show off his new power. As they stood together, Jaygarcia Saturn and Imu appeared, having transformed into a strange, merged form. When asked by Newgate what they were facing, Rocks simply replied that it was the World itself.[32]

Rocks Pirates Vs Garp & Roger

Rocks and his crew against Roger and Garp.

Eventually, Roger and Monkey D. Garp formed an alliance to defeat Rocks and his remaining crew, resulting in the dissolution of the Rocks Pirates.[1]

Just before they reached the island, Rocks established that their primary objective was to rescue Shakky, and that any treasure they found could be divided up afterwards.[33] Once they reached the island, Rocks led his crew ashore and then charged ahead of them. Around the same time, Roger and his crew arrived, with Roger wanting vengeance on Rocks for letting Shakky get abducted. While his crew was on the hunt for Shakky, Rocks secretly searched for his wife and son, prioritizing their safety.[34] Later, during the incident, Rocks and Roger encountered each other, with Rocks demanding that Roger get out of his way,[8] and Roger and Monkey D. Garp formed an alliance to defeat Rocks and his crew, resulting in the dissolution of the Rocks Pirates.[1]

According to Loki, more than 14 years before the present, Rocks had allegedly been killed by the World Government at an unspecified time.[35] The allegation is supported by Sengoku,[36] and the Five Elders' desire for Rocks' murder.[37]

Legacy

Many of Rocks' subordinates would go on to become extremely notable pirates, particularly Edward Newgate, Charlotte Linlin, and Kaidou, who became three of the Four Emperors ruling over the New World.[1] Shiki infamously clashed with the Roger Pirates multiple times and became the first documented inmate to escape Impel Down,[38] while Captain John gathered a fabled treasure that's been sought for decades.[39]

Rocks' place in history has been considerably diminished in the decades since his death, with many younger Marines being unaware of who he is. According to Sengoku, this lack of knowledge about him is mainly due to the World Government's intervention, as his path resulted in him dabbling in subjects they forbid, with the most notable being him having learned about Imu, the true secret ruler of the world, prior to his rise into piracy,[7] a thing that only the Five Elders and Knights of God have knowledge of. Additionally, due to the overall lack of camaraderie within the Rocks Pirates, most of Rocks' past subordinates are not inclined to talk about their time sailing with the crew.[1]

Rocks' dream of taking over the world would be inherited by his son Marshall D. Teach, who would go on to incidentally cause the death of Roger's own son Portgas D. Ace and directly kill and usurp Whitebeard's status as an Emperor. He would name his flagship the "Saber of Xebec",[40] and also reclaim Rocks's old territory on Hachinosu from his former subordinate Ochoku.[41] Rocks being Teach's father is seemingly known to only to the Five Elders and the Ten Titanic Captains of Teach's crew, as not even Fleet Admiral Sengoku knew when the name was nominated to be a Warlord.

A full 38 years after his death, his former subordinates Kaidou and Linlin decided to put aside their enmity with each other and form a temporary alliance to conquer the world.[42] This development, though ultimately short-lived, caused the old guard of the Marines to recall the era of Rocks and necessitated instruction of the younger sailors about his actions, as many of them knew nothing about Rocks.[1]

Despite the horrible treatment Rocks gave Loki, the giant prince remains a fan of the late pirate to this day, blaming himself for being born in the wrong era, and despising the World Government for killing Rocks.

Trivia

Rocks's surname is likely derived from the real-life pirate Roche Braziliano, which in English translates to "Rock the Brazilian" from his long exile in Brazil. Rocks disappeared suddenly and mysteriously, much like the real-world pirate after 1671; while Rocks died, the original pirate's fate was never confirmed.

Rocks's given name is based on a xebec, a type of Mediterranean sailing ship used for trading.

Rocks's wanted poster has a remarkable similarity to Buggy's current wanted poster; they both have their tongues out, menacingly stare at the camera while their hands make a similar pose.
