Chapter 61 - Chapter 61 — A Few Days Later

Maple Hollow had settled into the steady rhythm of early autumn. The trees lined the streets in bursts of amber and gold, and the air carried the crispness of approaching evening, blending with the faint aroma of woodsmoke drifting from chimneys.

Hannah was at the café, arranging fresh pastries in the display, while Emma sat at her usual corner table, sketchbook open, capturing the cozy atmosphere in delicate strokes. Occasionally, her pencil paused as she looked up, catching Hannah mid-motion — wiping a counter, adjusting a chair, smiling at a customer.

"You really do have a way with this place," Emma said, leaning back in her chair and tapping her pencil against the sketchbook.

Hannah laughed softly, brushing a stray crumb from her apron. "I try. But I think it's easier when you're here to make the quiet moments even better."

Emma raised an eyebrow playfully. "You mean I make you better?"

Hannah smiled, shaking her head. "We make each other better. I just happen to notice it more with you around."

The morning stretched gently around them, filled with the quiet hum of conversation and the comforting scent of coffee and baked goods. Every glance, every small interaction between them seemed to carry a little extra weight — a private acknowledgment that life had started to feel lighter, brighter, steadier.

Later in the afternoon, Hannah decided to close up early. "Come on," she said, gathering her coat. "Let's take advantage of the sunlight before it disappears."

Outside, the streets gleamed from an earlier drizzle, leaves shimmering like gold in the soft sun. They walked side by side, shoulders brushing naturally, laughing at small things — a dog chasing a falling leaf, a child squealing on the sidewalk, a neighbor calling hello from across the street.

Emma's hand found Hannah's, fingers intertwining as if by instinct. They didn't speak; there was no need. The world seemed to stretch around them in quiet approval, allowing this simple, profound closeness to exist without interruption.

When they reached Hannah's apartment, the sunlight had faded into a soft, amber glow. They paused at the door, sharing a smile that said everything words couldn't.

Hannah whispered, "I don't ever want to take days like this for granted."

Emma leaned in slightly, her voice warm. "Neither do I."

And with that, they stepped inside, letting the quiet promise of many more ordinary — yet extraordinary — days stretch before them.
