Chapter 60 - Chapter 60 — That Evening

The town had quieted down, leaving only the soft glow of streetlamps and the occasional rustle of leaves carried by the wind. Inside Hannah's apartment, the warmth from the heater mixed with the lingering scent of the café — fresh coffee and vanilla — creating a comforting cocoon.

Emma sat cross-legged on the couch, a blanket over her legs, flipping through her sketchbook but mostly glancing at Hannah as she moved around the room. There was something effortless in the way Hannah tidied up, the mundane motions made luminous simply by her presence.

"You really do take care of this place," Emma said softly, watching Hannah adjust a vase of fresh flowers on the table.

Hannah glanced over her shoulder, a small smile tugging at her lips. "I take care of it, and you take care of me," she replied.

Emma's eyes softened. "I don't feel like I do anything special."

"Everything you do is special," Hannah said simply, walking over and settling beside her on the couch. Their shoulders brushed, and the quiet spark of closeness hung between them.

For a while, they simply sat, listening to the hum of the city beyond the walls and the gentle tick of the clock. Emma leaned her head slightly against Hannah's shoulder, and Hannah didn't move away. The contact was small, but the weight of it carried more than words could express — a steady warmth that filled the spaces left behind by the day.

"You know," Hannah murmured after a moment, "I didn't expect life to feel like this. Calm. Full. Easy."

Emma lifted her gaze, meeting Hannah's eyes. "I know what you mean. It's not the fireworks kind of love, but… it's better. Comfortable and alive at the same time."

Hannah smiled, her hand brushing against Emma's. "Exactly."

They sat that way until the streetlights flickered through the window and the room grew soft and shadowed, the quiet between them stretching like a promise. Nothing needed to be said — the connection was enough, steady and certain, full of warmth, laughter, and the unspoken understanding that this was just the beginning of everything they could become together.
