Chapter 376 - Caravan Defense

The road was covered in dust when we spotted the caravan.

I noticed it even before hearing the screams. The marks on the ground gave it away—wheels dragged in haste, scattered footprints, sacks dropped along the way. Someone had tried to flee too quickly.

"There are people alive there," Elara said beside me, watching ahead carefully.

Liriel narrowed her eyes. "And there are monsters following the trail."

Rai'kanna was already gripping her weapon firmly. "They're not attacking by chance. They're hunting."

Lyannis pointed to the slope on the right. "If they corner the caravan there, no one escapes."

Vespera took a deep breath. "Then we get there first."

We quickened our pace along a side trail, cutting through the low vegetation. The sounds became clearer—screams, wood striking, animals in panic.

When we finally reached the main road, the scene was already set.

The caravan was stopped in disarray. Two wagons overturned, merchants trying to pull crates together to improvise a barrier. Children and elderly hidden behind the vehicles. And, coming down the road in an uneven line, a large group of monsters advancing like a crooked tide.

It wasn't a direct attack.

It was prolonged pursuit.

"They're exhausted," I murmured.

Elara nodded. "They've been running for a long time."

"Takumi," Vespera said, already analyzing the terrain, "if we open space in front, they can retake the road."

"Rai'kanna, Lyannis, left flank. Stop them from closing the circle."

"Liriel, light up the center. They'll hesitate."

"Elara, with me."

No one argued. Each of them was already moving before I finished speaking.

I advanced straight down the road, not running, but with firm steps. The first creature noticed my approach too late. The sword cut cleanly and opened enough space for the others to instinctively fall back.

Liriel's light illuminated the path right behind me. The monsters hesitated for a second, bothered by it, and that was enough.

On the left, Rai'kanna and Lyannis intercepted the group trying to circle around the caravan. The sound of impact echoed sharply, followed by quick and precise movements.

Vespera was already near the wagons, directing the merchants.

"Push back. Stay together. Don't run now."

Elara kept the rear clear, preventing any creature from slipping past us.

The fight there wasn't to defeat them all.

It was to gain passage.

The monsters kept coming down the road, but now they were met with organized resistance. I kept the front open, slowly retreating as the caravan reorganized.

"Now!" Vespera shouted.

The merchants began lifting the wagons. Animals were hurriedly released from their tethers. Children were placed back onto the seats.

Liriel intensified the light, forcing the monster line to disperse.

"Takumi, more to the right," Elara warned.

I turned the sword and brought down two that tried to close the gap.

Rai'kanna pushed the last of the flank away. Lyannis was already covering the road's blind spots.

The caravan began to move.

Slowly at first, then with more firmness.

"They'll follow," Lyannis said.

"Then we escort," I replied.

And that's exactly what we did.

We walked alongside the caravan as it retook the road heading south. Monsters still appeared through the vegetation, but now they were few and disorganized.

Elara eliminated those who came too close.

Vespera kept the civilians calm.

Liriel continued lighting the path, like a steady beacon.

Rai'kanna and Lyannis took turns protecting the flanks.

I remained at the front, clearing the road.

After nearly forty minutes walking like that, the monsters simply stopped appearing.

Not because they were gone.

But because they had given up.

The caravan reached a more open stretch of road, where other adventurers were already waiting, alerted by the smoke signals the merchants had sent up earlier.

When we finally stopped, one of the men approached me with trembling hands.

"If you hadn't arrived…"

I just nodded.

It wasn't time for conversation.

Elara came closer and spoke quietly. "They didn't want the caravan. They wanted to push it."

"Redirect it," Vespera added.

Liriel looked north. "Like cattle."

Rai'kanna crossed her arms. "Testing how far they can force us to move."

Lyannis agreed. "They're shaping the field."

I watched the empty road for a few seconds.

That wasn't a random attack.

It was territorial control.

The monsters weren't just destroying villages.

They were slowly redrawing the kingdom's map.

"They're learning to move us," I said.

Elara glanced at me sideways. "Or someone is teaching them."

We remained silent for a moment.

The caravan continued on its way escorted by other adventurers. We stayed there, watching the empty road that led north.

The feeling was clear.

Each of these missions wasn't isolated.

It was part of something bigger.

And, for the first time since we left the guild days ago, I was certain we weren't just reacting.

We were being guided.
