Chapter 15 - Fate

The dorm room was unusually quiet when Solace returned.

The lights were on, but dimmed, casting long shadows across the familiar clutter—books stacked unevenly, Ryan's jacket draped over a chair, Valen's notes spread out with almost military precision. Ryan was seated on his bed, half-heartedly scrolling through his phone, while Valen leaned against his desk, reading with a frown of concentration.

The door clicked shut behind Solace.

Ryan looked up first. "You're late."

Valen glanced over his book. "Library again?"

Solace set his bag down slowly, as if he needed the extra time to gather himself. "Yeah," he said. Then, after a pause, "But… not just for studying."

That got Ryan's full attention. He sat up. "Oh?"

Valen closed his book. "Something happened."

Solace exhaled and ran a hand through his hair. "I saw her."

Both of them froze.

Ryan blinked. "Her… as in her?"

Solace nodded once. "Lily."

For a second, the room was silent.

Valen broke it first, carefully. "Are you sure?"

"I heard her voice," Solace said. "I knew it instantly. And then I saw her. Sitting there. Like no time had passed at all."

Ryan let out a low whistle. "Damn. That's… that's big."

Solace sat on the edge of his bed, shoulders tense. "She recognized me too. We talked. Not much. But enough."

Valen studied him. "How did she seem?"

Solace thought about it. The hesitation in her voice. The relief in her eyes. "Different," he said. "But still Lily."

Ryan leaned back, arms crossed behind his head. "So? Was it awkward? Emotional? World-ending?"

Solace gave a faint, humorless smile. "All three. In that order."

Valen nodded slowly. "Did you clear things up?"

"No," Solace said honestly. "Not yet. We didn't dig into the past. We agreed not to rush it."

Ryan tilted his head. "That sounds… surprisingly mature."

Solace glanced at him. "I didn't know if I could handle more than that tonight."

Valen spoke quietly. "You did the right thing. Some things need space before they make sense."

Ryan looked between them, then grinned. "Still. Fate running into you at the library? That's straight out of a novel."

Solace snorted. "If this is a novel, it's being unnecessarily cruel with the pacing."

That earned a small laugh from Valen.

Ryan's expression softened. "How do you feel?"

Solace didn't answer immediately. He stared at the floor, then said, "Like something I thought was over just… reopened. But not in a bad way. More like—unfinished."

Valen nodded. "Unfinished doesn't mean doomed."

Ryan pointed at him. "Listen to the man with a girlfriend."

Valen rolled his eyes. "I'm serious."

Solace looked up at them, gratitude flickering in his eyes. "Thanks. Both of you."

Ryan stretched and flopped back onto his bed. "Anytime. Just don't vanish into a tragic spiral, okay?"

"No promises," Solace said dryly.

Valen picked up his book again, though his tone remained gentle. "One step at a time, Solace. That's enough."

Solace lay back on his bed, staring at the ceiling. Outside, the campus had gone quiet—but inside his chest, something long dormant had begun to stir again.

And this time, he wasn't alone with it.

Lily didn't return to her dorm room right away.

Instead, she wandered the campus until the sky dimmed into a soft evening blue, her thoughts tangled and restless. Solace's face—older, sharper, but unmistakably his—kept resurfacing no matter how hard she tried to push it away. By the time she finally stepped into the dorm, her chest felt tight, like she'd been holding her breath for years.

Yuna and Cindy were already there.

Yuna sat cross-legged on her bed, glasses slipping slightly down her nose as she highlighted notes, while Cindy leaned against her desk chair, brushing her hair after a long shift at the café.

Cindy noticed Lily first. "You look like you've seen a ghost."

Lily hesitated, fingers tightening around the strap of her bag. "I… kind of did."

Yuna looked up immediately. "What happened?"

Lily set her bag down slowly and sat on the edge of her bed. For a moment, she just stared at the floor, gathering the courage she hadn't known she needed.

"I ran into someone at the library today," she said quietly.

Cindy raised an eyebrow. "Someone bad?"

"…Someone from my past."

Yuna closed her notebook. "Lily."

Lily swallowed. "His name is Solace."

The room went still.

Cindy straightened. "That Solace?"

Lily nodded. "I thought I'd never see him again. We lost contact years ago." Her voice wavered despite her effort to keep it steady. "And then today, I heard his voice. I turned around—and he was right there."

Yuna's expression softened. "How did you feel?"

Lily let out a shaky breath. "Like time collapsed. Like all the things I buried suddenly remembered how to breathe."

Cindy crossed the room and sat beside her. "Did you talk?"

"Yes. A little." Lily's lips curved into a faint, bittersweet smile. "We sat together. It was awkward. Quiet. But not uncomfortable. He hasn't changed as much as I thought he would."

Yuna hesitated before asking, "Does it still hurt?"

Lily closed her eyes. "I think… it never really stopped."

Cindy reached for her hand and squeezed it. "Hey. You don't have to figure everything out tonight."

"I know," Lily said.

Yuna spoke gently. "Do you think you'll see him again?"

Lily opened her eyes, uncertainty flickering there. "I don't know. Part of me wants to run. The other part… doesn't want to lose him a second time."

Cindy smiled softly. "Sounds like your heart's already made a decision. You're just catching up."

Lily let out a quiet laugh. "You two make it sound so simple."

"It's not simple," Yuna said. "But you don't have to face it alone."

Lily looked at them—at Yuna's quiet reassurance, at Cindy's steady warmth—and felt something ease inside her chest.

"Thank you," she said softly.

Outside, night settled over Northvale, calm and unassuming. But inside Lily, something long unresolved had begun to shift—slowly, cautiously—like a door creaking open after years of being shut.
