"Are we leaving Mama?"
Those words struck me differently than I'd anticipated.
I spun around immediately, and there he stood—my precious little one—framed in the doorway with those huge, trusting eyes. No fury burned in them, only a simple question. Just quiet wonder.
A crushing surge of feeling swept over me.
Without hesitation, I rushed across the room in swift strides, gathered him into my embrace, and held him close. I buried my face against his tiny shoulder, taking in his familiar scent.
"I'm so sorry, baby," I murmured, my voice shaking. "So sorry for pushing you away before."
The first droplet escaped my eye and traced down my face.
Cooper's small arms circled my neck, clinging just as fiercely.
He rubbed my back with gentle little touches, as though he believed he could soothe me the way I always calmed him. That tender gesture shattered something deep within me.
