Gruk noted this too.
He was noting all of it.
The notes would go into the session log that he filed every training morning. Not for Satou — for his own record. The settlement's defensive capacity was a number that Gruk maintained internally, updated with every session, accurate within the margin of what he'd seen in fifty years of military operation.
It was currently higher than at any point since the war.
He intended to make it higher still.

Third hour: contact drill.
Not full combat — controlled contact, the specific exercise of people who needed to understand what impact felt like without the consequences of actual engagement. Gruk demonstrated once. The recruits ran the drill in pairs.
He watched.
The young demon Ash was fast. The evolution had given the demon a reaction time that was measurably better than the others. Good. Also a liability — fast reaction without judgment was recklessness.
