The other contestants had already left the children's ward, but a few still lingered near the doorway. I could feel their eyes on me as I continued talking with the young patients. Some stared with obvious jealousy, others with genuine surprise. I didn't care about their reactions.
I wasn't here to put on a show or impress anyone with fake charity work. I came here to make whatever small difference I could, because that's all I had to give. My time, my heart, and my ability to truly listen.
Throughout the day, the contest staff had herded us from ward to ward like cattle. Most girls rushed through their required visits, snapping photos with sick children before moving on to the next photo opportunity. I stayed at the back of every group, avoiding the cameras entirely.
