Chapter 37 - [37] Third Party

Nightingale had received one simple mission, exterminate the villain league.

According to his mysterious benefactor, the League of Villains were secretly working under All For One, the man who had disappeared years ago.

He gritted his teeth, a wave of disgust washing over him. 'That bastard.'

After getting tortured to the point of nearly losing his mind by All For One, he was more than elated to bring down the league.

But there was something that didn't quite add up.

Why was that man so interested in ending the league? And why did he go to such lengths as organizing a strike force for him, a team which was basically another league of villains?

So far, his true goals were still unknown, and up until yesterday when he was informed via letter, Nighttale had not even known of the existence of this group.

For people as powerful as them, it was strange that they had never been heard of even once.

'Well, it doesn't matter…'

As long as he could accomplish his goals, Nighttale didn't care what his mysterious backer was planning.

Bang!

The barrel of his gun was red-hot as multiple bullets surged out of the weapon, tearing through the distance in the space of seconds.

Shigaraki jumped into a barrel roll, hiding behind a large pillar.

So far, the only reason he had managed to dodge was because he was predicting his shots and moving just before he would fire.

'He is smarter than he looks…'

At first glance, Shigaraki looked like an idiot fueled only by rage and the will to cause carnage, but the more Nighttale watched him, the more he learned of his calculative side.

'He's just like that man.'

The large pillar suddenly burst at its stem, the robust frame melting to dust. The pillar tilted, and the gigantic concrete came falling right at him.

Nighttale sprinted to the side, jumping before the pillar could turn him to a bloody sludge.

While he was in the air, he saw Shigaraki racing across the body of the pillar, and just as it was about to crash, he jumped off it, charging right at Nighttale, arms outstretched.

Nighttale raised the barrel of his gun and fired, but then the gun only let out a wheezing sound. It had overheated.

Shigaraki was nearly upon him a second later. His hand reflected in Nighttale's pupils, and a deranged spark came to life as he was moments away from grabbing him.

Thwack!

Nighttale drove his foot right into his gut, momentarily creating a separation before swiftly rolling to the side.

Shigaraki landed on his back, the smoke oozing from the ground below his palms as he boosted himself up, jumping right back into the battle.

He was launching blow after blow, each one fueled with his quirk to decay while Nighttale was moving from place to place, dodging his vicious swipes.

He leaned back as all five fingers brushed past his face, melting off a part of his mask. Then he shoved Shigaraki in the chest and kicked him in the knee, sending him down.

Nighttale lifted his gun hand and drove it right towards Shigaraki's head, but Shigaraki sidestepped the attack, using his failed momentum to infiltrate his personal space.

A satisfied smile tugged at the corner of his lips as his hand came, carrying the power of death itself.

Nighttale's eyes widened, his legs tensed as he jumped back, trying to once again create distance, but just before he could get far enough…

Shigaraki's fingers grazed his side.

First it was the thick leather cloth, skin and flesh followed later, the decay burning right through his body.

His only salvation was that he had jumped back in time; if not, the decay would have taken out his entire abdomen.

With blood dripping down his side, Nighttale cursed and lifted his now cooled gun. "You crazy bastard!"

At the other side of the building, fire was erupting every now and then, slowly turning the cinema into a fiery pit.

The roof had caught fire, the chairs were burning, and even the walls were not spared from the heat—a violent mix of white and blue fire that was turning everything to ash.

Dabi wiped the sweat off his brow, breathing heavily as he watched the white lady.

She was perfectly composed, not even a dot of soot marring her pretty face. But even as composed as she was, Dabi could see the cracks already beginning to form.

Her ability, Rebound, was something else, and Dabi had been feeling the wrath of her quirk for the past few minutes.

'So much for a first day…' he thought as he watched her slowly begin walking towards him.

Whatever he did, no matter how powerful, she would absorb and deliver it back twofold.

And yet, Dabi had been persistently attacking her since the battle had begun. No quirk was invincible, and now, he had seen the flaw in her seemingly perfect quirk.

"You have to release it, don't you?" Dabi smiled darkly.

He had noticed that each time he would strike, she never waited more than five seconds before countering, almost as though she couldn't keep it in for long.

The woman's face remained as impassive as ever. It was either Dabi was wrong, or she had the most impressive poker face he had ever seen.

Then she smirked. "You have a good eye. Too bad, too bad… this is the day you die."

"Hardly…" Dabi lunged, sending a fist flying at her face. She countered easily, grabbing his arm and spinning him to his back.

Rebound pushed a button on her fan, and sharp blades popped out of each side, just before she brought it down on Dabi's back.

Whoosh!

Fire shot out of his body, exploding like a bomb and encircling them both within it.

As the fire raged, spinning around like a fiery tornado, Dabi unhooked his arm and did a jumping kick, catching her in the ribs.

He took a step back and took his stance.

'All I have to do is deal a lot of damage in a short period of time,' he thought.

She would have only two options…

Overload her quirk, or take the damage.

The white lady stared at the wall of fire surrounding them and frowned, her eyes glowing white.

They both moved—

Their fists met with a bang, a shockwave cutting through the room as white and blue fire exploded outwards.

Dabi leaned back as a foot came flying at his face and jumped several steps back, but Rebound was fast. She had clearly been trained because her fighting style was unique, and she moved in a way no normal person could.

She jumped, driving her foot down, cracking the concrete as Dabi dodged, then she rotated, her fists flying and her legs moving.

She caught Dabi in the chest, knee, and face, cracking his head backward.

And then her fist came charging at his head, empowered by bubbling white fire.

But just before she could crush his skull, the fire surrounding them immediately engulfed her body whole, creating an explosion that blackened the ground below them.

Dabi spat out blood, fire already emerging from his body as he stared ahead.

Out of the inferno came the white lady… her cold composure was gone, burned away like everything around them.

Unlike several times before, this time, she had not come out unscathed.

'One…'

Dabi counted in his mind.

'Two.'

White fire sparked on Rebound's body, the ground beneath her feet scorching as she took another step forward.

"You dared to touch me? You villainous scum!"

'Three, four…'

Dabi immediately jumped to the side, using his fire to boost himself as a wall of white fire exploded out of her body, consuming everything in its path.

Rebound turned to glare at him. She dragged out one of the sticks on her fan, pulling out a sleek knife.

"You're dead."

Dabi smirked, his eyes glowing a bright azure blue. "Give me your best shot."

The battle between both factions raged on, neither side able to completely suppress the other.

Although the Fallen Legion were trained, the League of Villains outnumbered some of their members two to one, making it impossible to make a decisive move.

The only side that had nearly concluded his battle was Pulse.

Mr. Compress and Kurogiri could barely stand, their bodies aching from a series of electric shocks and blows.

Pulse never said a word as he fought. He only systematically brought them down, using his speed to slowly wear them out before launching counterstrikes of his own.

He raised his hands, blue lightning dancing in his fingers as he watched them, his yellow eyes narrowed.

And then he lunged.

At the same time, Shigaraki and Nighttale had lunged at each other, about to bring the fight to a close.

But at that moment, a heavy gust of wind erupted in the center of the cinema, the intense wind blowing so heavily that chairs were uprooted from the ground and launched into the wild wind.

And then the wind exploded, sending everything it had gathered in all directions.

The hall that had been filled with violence was suddenly quiet; every single person had their eyes locked in the center of the hall.

Standing right in the center of the carnage was a man in clothes as dark as the night and a golden domino mask shielding his features.

He had his hands in his pockets as he lazily glanced around, taking in the hall.

Then his lips parted as he spoke.

"You little shits, can't a guy have a meal in peace?"
