Chapter 39 - [39] Caught (ps bonus)

Kyle slowly drifted through the sky, flying like a bird who couldn't be bothered to flap its wings.

He was at the point of mingling with the clouds, feeling the moisture seeping into his clothes so no one could see him from land.

'Like as if the villain league wasn't already a handful…' he muttered angrily.

"Maybe I should just wipe them out." He gestured, flicking his fingers just before shaking his head.

It might have been easier to just wipe out the villains, but it would solve nothing. If that was the case, then villains would be extinct, considering how many of them he might have thrown in jail.

It was like a cancer, cut out one part and another one would grow in to fill its place.

This time they would be more unpredictable, more violent, and harder to contain.

Kyle let out a tired breath, taking off his mask and jacket. He folded the jacket and slipped the mask into his shirt as he spotted his house below.

Then, moving too fast for anyone to notice, he sped right to his window and jumped in, shutting it behind him.

'Home sweet home.'

He tossed his jacket to the other side of the room and stretched, feeling the bones of his back pop as they created a crackling sound.

Then his eyes lazily moved to his alarm clock.

2:00 AM

Tomorrow was a workday, and he had barely gotten any sleep, yet there was something else on his mind.

Food…

Although vampires could survive purely on blood alone, Kyle could still taste perfectly well and was in no mood to give up that pleasure.

Instead of just going through his room door, Kyle flew out of his window and went down the building, choosing to use the elevator to get to their front door instead.

He had been doing this ever since Tsumi asked him how come she didn't hear him enter the building.

After taking the elevator back to their apartment, Kyle took out his keys and fitted them into the hole.

He opened his door and stepped into the dark living room, his body growing stiff merely a second later.

Kyle could sense her.

He had calmed his senses like he did on instinct while at home; that was why he didn't notice the moment he entered his room.

But now that there were no walls between them, he could hear everything…

From the calm beating of her heart to her gentle breathing, down to the rustle of her shirt as her chest rose and fell, brushing against the fabric.

Flick!

Every single light in the living room burst into life, drowning them in a bright white light.

Kyle winced, covering his eyes like a vampire exposed to sunlight.

Tsumi was sitting in the living room, legs crossed and a playful pout on her cheeks as she watched him.

"Kyle!!!"

"Y-yes, sis??"

Tsumi sighed tiredly. "It's 2 AM, 2 AM! What were you doing out?"

Kyle scratched his head, his mind racing for any excuse he could use. "Umm, I was… shopping, yes, I was shopping!"

Tsumi cocked her head to the side. "Shopping… by 2 AM?"

'Well, not my best lie, but we can work with that…'

Kyle allowed his shoulders to sag as he walked up to his sister, sitting next to her on the couch.

Tsumi glared at him from the side as she waited for him to finish his lie.

The first thing Kyle did was turn off the lights; even the sun wasn't as intense as these little devils.

Then he sighed tiredly, massaging his shoulder with his hand.

"I've been paying attention to the café more and more these days…" he said with a sigh.

The best method of telling a lie was to mix up your lie with truths the person already knew or, better yet, suspected.

Add in a little admission of sin, a little thing that will hide the much greater lie!

He cleared his throat and pulled up his most sincere face. "I feel bad for having to leech on you all these years, so I'm trying to make it work."

Tsumi calmed down a little, a ghost of a smile appearing on her face.

'When did Kyle become this thoughtful? He's growing into such a fine man!' she thought, her fingers playing with the hem of her dress.

But she did not allow her happiness to show; she would be a fool to think that was what kept him up until 2 AM.

Kyle let his words sink in, watching her reaction from the corner of his eyes.

"We are adding new drinks to the menu and even working on a brand deal! You should see our sales report now, sis, it's huge!"

Tsumi's eyes widened slightly as she watched him. 'Is it possible to make that progress in such a short time?'

She was a businesswoman, so it was hard to believe he could effect such a grand change that fast.

'Then again, he is my brother.' She smiled inwardly. 'Of course he would be a genius!'

Kyle chuckled, crossing his legs as Tsumi listened attentively.

'Now it's time to drive it home!' he mused.

"But I would be lying if I said that was all I did."

Kyle stole a glance at his sister, watching the slight shift in her expression as she leaned in, her full attention on him.

'Fool! She has not only taken the bait, she has swallowed the whole darn hook!'

He put up his most sober face and leaned deeper into his chair.

"I'm afraid I had to babysit one of my staff… you see, Sakura has been going through some things."

'I apologize for using you this way, Sakura—not like you'll ever know, though.'

He paused for dramatic effect, like an author stopping a chapter at a cliffhanger, only to release the next chapter at a completely different scene.

Then he smirked.

Internally, of course…

"She was drunk to stupor, so drunk, in fact, that she walked right into the road without knowing."

Tsumi gasped, her hand placed over her mouth as she watched Kyle.

"Saku? Is she alright??"

Kyle breathed out, then slowly shook his head.

Five seconds passed, then ten…

Then he waved his hands dismissively. "She's fine, I spent all this time nursing her back to health."

Tsumi let out a breath of relief and sank into the sofa, staring up at the ceiling.

"And here I was thinking you were involving yourself in criminal activities."

Kyle froze.

"Hehehe, d-don't joke like that, of course I would never do such a thing."

She nodded and tapped his shoulder. "Of course you wouldn't, I don't know what I was thinking!"

Tsumi laughed lightly and rose to her feet.

"You must be hungry; your food is in the microwave." She yawned, stretching her fingers as she made her way to her room.

"Alright, thanks, sis!" Kyle said as he rubbed his palms together.

'And that, my dear, is how you construct the perfect lie—'

"Ohh, and by the way…" Tsumi added, interrupting his thoughts.

'Why do I suddenly have this bad feeling?'

Kyle smiled. "Yes, sis…?"

"I'm curious to see how much the café has grown; I also want to see Saku since it's been so long."

She smiled and began entering her room.

"Get your sales report ready, I'll be in your café this week."

Kyle smiled brightly, his left eye twitching as she left.

'Well, damn.'
