The hallway lights were dim when the elevator doors opened, and Mark stepped out into the quiet floor. His suit was sharp, his face tense like he'd been holding himself together all day. The faint smell of antiseptic hung in the air as he walked toward the room.
Lilly stood beside Nathan's bed, smoothing the blanket near his arm. He was asleep again, his breathing steady. She didn't notice Mark until she saw his reflection in the glass door.
"Mark,? she whispered, surprised, "You're here."
He nodded, his voice low and warm, "Couldn't stay away from someone who makes me feel whole last night."
Lilly glanced toward Nathan, then back at him, "You didn't have to come all the way here. He's doing better. The doctor said the surgery went well."
"I needed to see it for myself," he said, stepping closer, "You've barely texted me all day."
"I've been here," she said, almost apologetic, "Didn't want to leave him alone."
