Chapter 30 - Whispers Beneath the Glass

The next morning, Lilly moved through the motions of her morning routine: shower, coffee, clothes, lipstick, all while her mind replayed flashes of yesterday: the way Mark had pulled her close in his office, the sound of his voice when he said her name, the door slamming behind Luna's shocked exit. That sound had echoed through the whole floor.

She had tried to ignore it, but part of her knew what that meant. Luna sure wouldn't let it go.

By the time Lilly reached the office, the atmosphere felt different. She could feel it in her bones. People still smiled when they saw her, still greeted her politely, but there was a subtle, swift glance exchanged between desks, the too-quick silence when she walked past. The faint mechanical clatter of keyboards filled the air, yet the undercurrent of whispers was unmistakable.

She told herself not to care. She'd done nothing wrong. Except she knew that wasn't true, at least not in the way people would see it.
