Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: First Steps

My eyes widen as I see an outstandingly massive stadium in front of me. Clyde gets out and stands beside me, hands on his hips.

"Woah! It's gigantic! I've seen it from a distance but never up close!," He says, his eyes gleaming with awe and curiosity, "Hurry up, let's go inside and see what's happening!"

We walk inside the front automatic doors. We walk into a massive stadium with hundreds of people inside, screaming and cheering for the people in the fighting pit. It seems there are also team fights, ranging from a two-on-two all the way up to a five-on-five. There is currently a 1v2 fight taking place in the pit: A gigantic man with a man with outlandish, wild hair that looks like a collection of whips against a woman with two blades and another woman that's holding a Muay Thai stance, with both hands close to her face and a leg propped up slightly.

"And Gigantus lands a devastating blow straight to Edna, sending her flying sky high!"

In an instant, I see the girl with the two blades go flying straight into the air, and then begin falling back down. The guy with the whip-like hair coils his hair before lunging just before the girl hits the ground, sending her whirling into the wall. At that point, the question of who the winner was going to be became clear. From there, I left the mini arena I was at and began making my way to the main arena, The Champions Circle.

The main building branches out into six smaller arenas, three on each side of the circle. I make my way to The Champions Circle's large entrance, located in the exact center of the complex, before quickly changing into my costume in a nearby bathroom. A referee approaches me.

"Are you… the Rogue Current?"

I nod, trying to avoid using my voice as much as possible. He gestures to me to follow him, and he leads me down a flight of stairs toward the opening gate. He goes back and enters the arena through a separate gate near the middle. The announcer begins speaking in a loud, booming voice, and the walls rumble with the excitement of the audience. Surprisingly, there are quite a lot of people for a small arena fight, and that too only between two people.

"Ladies and Gentleman, on the red side of the arena, today we have a familiar Enchanted you may have seen before," he says as the huge Red Gate flies open. "The Trash of the Trash, Rusty!"

The crowd goes wild, the walls rumbling with even more energy and enthusiasm than the first. After a few seconds, the announcer comes back on, silencing the crowd.

"And on the blue side of the arena, a newcomer joins the ranks. Someone you've probably never heard of," he says as the gate in front of me begins to open. "The Live Wire, give it up for…," the crowd quiets, just a bit, "The Rogue Current!" The gates fly open, revealing a flash of bright light and a hyped, booming crowd of what I assume to be a blur of thousands of viewers. My eyes adjust shortly after as I walk onto the arena, making sure my cloak, hood, and mask are all on tight. I reach the center before looking at the man in front of me. He's significantly taller than me, is covered in countless more defined muscles all over his near-barren body, and carries a 5-foot, sheathed axe on his back. I gotta say, I like my odds.

The referee steps up between us and begins briefly telling us, along with the crowd, the match rules:

"Remember: No killing, and I will step in if needed. Surrendering is an option if the fighter believes it is necessary"

No killing? That was likely why the man's axe is sheathed, but what's his Main Enchant?

The announcer begins counting down as the crowd chants along.

"3… 2… 1… FIGHT!"

As soon as the match starts, I dash backwards, putting a little distance between me and Rusty, but he closes the distance- as if he predicted my move. He quickly sweeps his axe low, and I have to jump to avoid it. He tries to prepare another swing before I land but the axe is too heavy and I manage to dodge the following swing to my head, dashing left. He follows quickly behind me. He's not letting me recover properly, I think to myself. I keep dashing and dodging a few more times before the crowd begins to boo me.

"What's this? Is Rogue Current trying to put distance between them?" The announcer exclaims.

I smirk underneath my mask. I make a longer dash this time, making sure to get slightly close to the wall. He follows behind me and brings his axe down where he predicts I will land. I turn around and face him while I begin flowing my electricity through the soles of my shoes, making me slide backwards more than he expected.

"Huh?" He lets out a confused grunt. As I slide backwards, I begin drawing electricity from my shoes midair. I plant both feet on the ground firmly while balling up the electricity into my fist. I lock my hand near my waist and push off in an upward direction, flying straight toward Rusty's face. I launch my fist as sparks fly and it connects straight to his chin. He falters back and groans, clutching his face. The impact slowed my launch, putting me right above him. I draw more energy from the shoes, but don't draw it towards my hands. I keep it at the shoes, and focus it all into the back of my right heel. I bring my right foot above my head as I begin my descent towards him.

By the time he recovers, it's already too late for him.

"I win,"

I swing my foot from above my head straight down into his shocked and fearful face, my heel hitting him square in the nose and sparks slamming his entire body straight into the floor. The force of my kick makes me lose my balance, but slows my fall slightly, causing me to fall onto the sand of the arena on my back. The referee blows his whistle and goes to examine Rusty before blowing a longer whistle and pointing at me.

The arena goes silent as the whistle echoes, and I can hear my own breathing and heartbeat. A moment later, they erupt as cheers rattle the arena floors.

"I don't believe it, folks! The newcomer has completely wiped Rusty! He couldn't even use his Main Enchant in time! Amazing!" I slowly get up, wiping the dust off my cloak and rubbing it off my gloves. I turn around and look at Rusty, seeing him unconscious on the floor and his purple, broken nose. Maybe I tried too hard on him. Better safe than sorry, I think.

The referee approaches me, a small smile on his face.

"Good work, newcomer, your money will be transferred to your account within a few hours."

Wait, money? I get money from this?

"Do you mind if I get it in cash?" I have to ask because I don't have my own bank account yet, and I have to keep this a secret from my parents.

"Sure, go ask the front cashier over in that hallway." He points towards a hallway outside the pit. I nod my head before exiting the pit where I came from, before the fans could swarm me, with the doors slamming shut behind me. I make my way back up the flight of stairs I came down from and begin making my way towards the hallway that the referee pointed me to. I feel a hand grab my shoulder.

"Yo dude! That fight was crazy!" Clyde exclaims while smacking my back with his hand.

"Thanks, it didn't even feel all that difficult honestly," I say while pushing my chest out, attempting to seem bigger than I am. We make our way towards the cashiers table and see a girl a few years older with blonde hair. I tell her my alias, and after she confirms my identity and victory, she takes a moment to gather the money and hand it to me. It's five twenty-dollar bills. A hundred dollars?! For one match?? After I bow slightly, me and Clyde take our leave from the nearest exit and begin making our way to his car. We take a look at the sky.

"You think these damn aliens will ever leave us?" Clyde asks, staring up at the sky. I look up with him.

"Willingly? Probably not. That's why we gotta make them leave," I say, looking up at the colossal spaceship that's looming over us. We get in the truck, me in the passenger seat again.

"How will we do it? Humanity currently has no way to-"

Clyde is cut off by a rumble that shakes the ground. The Info Nexus pops up in front of me, with big, bolder letters on it.

"Event initiated: The Dragon of the Skies has descended."
