Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: Scavenger Hunt

"Get up." The cloak it ruffles as I pull it off of Clara, forcing her awake.

"I'm up, I'm up." She gets up and stretches her arms. "I also forgot to tell you something yesterday."

"What is it?" I ask while putting my cloak back on.

"The fights are broadcasted by little camouflaged drones. They should've gotten a fight as big as yours." She says while putting her own cloak on.

"What? Does that mean a lot of people saw me?"

"Yea, but your mask was on the entire time, and it's difficult for them to follow us inside of buildings, so your identity is fine."

"What about you?" I ask curiously. "Don't you have an identity as an Enchanted?"

"No, I haven't made my debut yet, and I might not at all, so my identity is also safe. As for the mask, I found it off the same dead guy I got the cloak from." She finishes putting the cloak on before she grabs my hand and pulls me outside. "Let's go! We can talk on the way there."

The icy wind hits my face, sending shivers down my spine. I quickly put my mask on, which provides a barrier from the cold.

"Do you know which way the town is," I ask her as she drags me along.

"I'm pretty sure it's this way, keep up!" She lets go of my hand and runs ahead, jumping and skipping in the snow like a little kid, before she stops and points in a direction while looking at me with a gleaming smile. "There it is!"

Looking at her smile, I imagine the girl in white next to her, a near identical image of laughter and smiles. I slap myself and shake my head. Why do my memories feel so much stronger? So much more vivid? I look up at the sky, the snow gently falling on the mask. There's no going back, only forward. I quickly catch up with Clara and fall in step next to her.

"I can already tell the supplies are low. Don't make unnecessary complications and grab anything you think can be useful," I say as we reach the edge of the town.

With a nod, we both split up, Clara going left and me going right. I jog through the streets, observing my surroundings as I go, before a building catches my eye. The sign is crooked, worn down and reads "Sherr-"

"Sherrif…" I whisper to myself. I enter it, the salon doors opening with a loud creak, and swing back. I look around the dark room, lit only by the cracks through the ceiling that let in sunlight. I walk further in, my shoes tapping against the creaky wooden floor. I reach the counter and look around once more, trying to see if there is anything of use here. A door near the farthest corner from the entrance catches my eye. It swings open to a room with nothing but a box inside that's leaning against the wall. It's rusted with the orange corrosion flaking up the entire thing, a contrast to the moss covered and worn down room. I hesitantly open the box, the bolts squeaking. A swarm of rats scurry out of the box. I immediately jumped backwards. Damn, that scared the crap out of me!

They run past my feet hurriedly, the last one looking up at me briefly before joining its group. I look up and see a long, elongated gun with a small silencer barrel and magazine clip. It's a sniper, I think to myself, but it's way too long to be a sniper! It's something else entirely! I gently lift the gun out of the box before Info Nexus shows up.

"The Silent Aegis: an unknown firearm that has fallen off of its former glory."

That's quite a short description, perhaps there's a way to restore it to its original? I put it back in the case and put the strap over my shoulder, letting it hang on my back. Do I have a knack for finding weapons or something? I make my way out and see a run down medical building just across, noticeable for the rusted plus sign. I make my way inside, the door falling down instantly as I touch the handle. It lands with a loud thud. I step inside, thinking it was pretty small for a hospital, before I make my way past the counter. I open up all the cabinets, finding bandages, anti septics, medicine, and everything in between. I shove them all into a ragged brown bag and make my way out. A burning hot metal pipe swings at me the moment I set foot outside. I lean backwards as it flies past my head, making a dent in the wooden frame of the door and making a sizzling sound. I jump backwards, putting distance between me and my attacker.

"Dammit." A voice frustratingly says as it gets into view of the door. I've heard this voice before. "I didn't think I'd miss."

The blood-shot eyes, the swaying walk, and the slurred words. It's the guy who broke into my school.
