Chapter 73 - Chapter 73

"Tsk."

The sharp sound of irritation cut through the humid air as a young man in a black suit adjusted his tie. His dark hair was tied back neatly, the tail of it brushing against his collar as he stared upward at the colossal barrier descending from the sky.

That man was Aki Hayakawa, a member of Tokyo Special Division 4.

The afternoon sunlight dimmed under the strange crimson hue of the barrier that now caged the amusement park. Aki's reflection glimmered faintly in its surface, his usually calm expression replaced by grim focus.

"Aki, slow down a little"

Behind him, a familiar female voice spoke lazily, the faint scent of smoke drifting on the wind.

"Himeno-senpai," Aki said, glancing back at the woman sitting casually on a bench. "Have you ever seen anything like this before?"

The woman leaned forward, a half-burnt cigarette resting between her fingers.

An eyepatch covered her right eye, and her remaining left one gleamed faintly beneath the flickering sunlight. Her posture was relaxed, but her tone carried the weight of experience.

"No," Himeno answered, slowly exhaling smoke. "I've never seen anything quite like this. But one thing's certain — this isn't the work of a devil."

She flicked the ash to the ground, then clarified with a dry smile, "—and by devil, I mean the ones from Hell, not the cursed kind."

Aki frowned. "Not a devil's ability… then what?"

He folded his arms, deep in thought.

If not a devil's power, then only two options remained — filth or void demons, creatures from the corrupted rifts between worlds. But those rifts had been sealed long ago under the supervision of the Onmyoji Bureau, the same agency that Seigen Amawaka once led during the crisis.

There shouldn't have been any leaks… and yet here it was.

A barrier this size, large enough to trap tens of thousands of people — it wasn't random. It was a ritual.

Himeno's voice broke through his thoughts. "Aki, try contacting the other members of the Division. If possible, reach Makima first. She'll know what to do."

She stubbed her cigarette on the pavement, then sighed, a small apologetic smile crossing her face.

"Sorry, Aki. I dragged you to the amusement park for some downtime, and now we're stuck in this mess."

Aki shook his head immediately. "No, Himeno-senpai. I'm glad I came."

Her eyes softened.

Despite everything, they were both trained for situations like this. And if the park really was under attack, they couldn't abandon the civilians.

Pulling out his phone, Aki scrolled through his contacts and tapped on Makima's name. The line buzzed once… twice…

Then—

"Sorry, you are not in the service area. Please try again later."

The robotic voice rang in his ear.

Aki exhaled slowly and pocketed his phone. "There's no signal. The barrier's blocking everything."

"I figured as much," Himeno muttered, scratching her head. "This thing's not just for trapping people… it's cutting us off from the outside entirely."

Her joking tone faded into silence. Both of them understood what that meant — no backup, no evacuation, no way out.

After a brief pause, Aki's hand unconsciously brushed the hilt of the weapon strapped across his back — a black-wrapped katana, more like a curse than a sword.

"I could use this," he said under his breath.

"Don't you dare."

Himeno's sharp tone cracked through the air. She stood up suddenly, eyes stern, the cigarette between her fingers trembling slightly.

"Not unless it's absolutely necessary, Hayakawa. You know what that sword does to you."

Silence followed.

Her voice softened. "You're still after the Gun Devil, aren't you? If you burn away your life using that cursed blade, who's going to take it down? Please… promise me you'll only use it when there's no other choice."

Aki's expression wavered. His fingers lingered on the blade for a moment before slowly pulling back.

"....I understand."

The weapon, despite its form, was no simple blade. It was part of his contract with the Curse Devil — a tool that could kill with three precise stabs, but at the cost of his lifespan.

Himeno finally exhaled in relief. She didn't want to lose another partner. Not here. Not again.

But before she could say more—

"Look!" Aki suddenly pointed upward.

Himeno turned her gaze skyward — and her entire body froze.

A massive magic circle had appeared above the amusement park, its radius wide enough to engulf the entire area. Black smoke swirled within its runes, pulsating faint blue light from its edges.

It hadn't activated yet… but when it did, the result would be catastrophic.

Gasps and screams erupted from every corner of the park.

People ran in every direction, only to crash against an invisible wall at the boundaries. The moment they touched it, their bodies were flung backward, hitting the ground with cries of pain. Panic spread like wildfire.

Children wailed, couples clung to each other, and the once-cheerful music from the rides warped into eerie silence.

Himeno's cigarette slipped from her fingers. It hit the ground and rolled to her feet.

"This…" she whispered, "is no ordinary monster."

Elsewhere in the Park,

Amidst the chaos, Gojo Satoru stood in the middle of the crowd, the sunlight bouncing off his snow-white hair.

In his arms, Nakano Nino trembled slightly, clutching his coat as the ground shook beneath them.

All around, panic spread — people screaming, running, stumbling over one another. Someone was crying nearby; another had fainted. Gojo, however, looked almost bored.

"Gojo-kun, w-what is that in the sky?" Nino stammered, her voice barely steady.

Gojo tilted his head, watching the rotating circle above. "That," he said calmly, "is a summoning formation."

Her breath hitched. "Summoning… what?"

"Demons," he replied lightly. "Or more specifically, Void Demons — things that shouldn't exist here."

His voice was calm, almost casual, but his eyes behind the blindfold were sharp. He'd seen this kind of magic before — the kind designed to harvest blood as a medium for opening rifts.

Someone had built this entire formation to turn everyone in the amusement park into a living sacrifice.

Nino's heart pounded. "Then… are we in danger?"

"Not you," Gojo said softly, his hand brushing through her hair. "Not as long as I'm here."

He smiled faintly, though his tone darkened. "Whoever did this went through a lot of effort. I can sense dozens of signatures across the barrier… demons, cursed users, even exorcists."

He narrowed his eyes. "Feels like a mixed world event again."

Nino blinked. "Mixed world?"

Gojo chuckled. "Yeah. Happens when the boundaries between dimensions start slipping. People from different worlds show up — sorcerers, exorcists, devils, all in one place. Remember that Onmyoji who tried to recruit me last month? He was from Magano — the Exorcist world."

Nino's face paled slightly. "You mean… this could be connected to them?"

"Maybe." Gojo shrugged. "Or maybe it's someone trying to imitate them. Either way, it's annoying."

He gently tightened his grip on her hand. "Stay close, okay?"

"Mm…" Nino nodded, still trembling but trusting him completely.

Gojo's mind raced as he surveyed the sky. Whoever cast this had power, that much was certain. But there was something off about the structure of the spell — its energy was unstable, as if drawn from multiple worlds at once.

"...You idiots," he muttered under his breath, grinning faintly. "You're going to blow yourselves up before you summon anything."

Suddenly, the air trembled.

Boom.

A deep, bell-like sound echoed from the formation above, reverberating through the entire amusement park. The crowd froze mid-scream.

Every face turned upward.

The magic circle now blazed with color, and the faint blue glow turned blood-red.

Gojo's expression sharpened. "Here it comes."

The ground quivered again as red lightning flashed through the clouds, casting eerie shadows across the terrified crowd. The air smelled of sulfur and ozone.

In the distance, Himeno and Aki stared at the spectacle from another part of the park, their expressions grim.

"This energy…" Himeno whispered. "It's not just demonic. It's something else—like it's pulling from another dimension."

Aki drew his katana slightly from its sheath, cursed energy flickering along its edge. "Whatever it is, we have to stop it before it activates fully."

Gojo's voice echoed faintly across the park, calm and amused, as if answering them both.

"Don't worry. I'll take care of it before it ruins my date."

Nino stared up at him, speechless. "You're joking even now?"

He grinned. "Always."

The sky screamed again as the barrier pulsed violently, and in that instant, the worlds of sorcery, exorcism, and devil hunting collided once more under a black sun.
