Chapter 28 - Chapter 28 – Breach Within

Part I – The First Strike

The morning was deceptively calm. Mist clung to the walls of Deline, and the scent of wet stone filled the air. Soldiers marched to their posts with careful precision, unaware that the most dangerous threat was not beyond the gates—but inside them.

In the council chambers, a meeting had been called to discuss fortifying the city against the next wave of shadows. Lord Morwen, still whispering doubts about Isolde, pushed her agenda. "We must limit the princess' role in strategy. Her power is… volatile. We cannot risk the safety of the kingdom on her touch alone."

Flagg, seated quietly at the king's side, gave a barely perceptible nod. His eyes flickered with satisfaction.

Lucan's patience snapped. "This council would see us defeated from within rather than united against the enemy! Are you blind to the threat outside?"

Some nobles glanced down, muttering under their breath. Others exchanged secret nods.

Isolde entered quietly, but all eyes were on her. She could feel the tension radiating like heat from a fire. The whispers were louder now, almost tangible, pressing against her from every corner.

Part II – A Friend's Betrayal

Sir Rylan approached under the guise of counsel. "Princess, I… I believe I know how to strengthen the city's wards," he said softly. "There is a ritual, older than the founding of Deline itself, that could enhance your power tenfold."

Isolde's heart lifted, but caution restrained her. "And this ritual—what does it demand in return?"

Rylan hesitated, a flicker of guilt passing across his face. "Only… trust me, it is necessary."

Later, when Isolde performed the ritual at the eastern gates, she discovered the truth too late. Shadows, previously held at bay by her chains of golden light, surged through the wards. The ritual had been tampered with—corrupted by Rylan's secret allegiance to Flagg.

The shadows struck from within, moving like water through cracks in the walls. Soldiers screamed, caught in the sudden chaos.

Part III – The Battle Inside

Lucan and Isolde rallied the guards, cutting through the first wave of infiltrators. Black-cloaked figures with glowing eyes emerged from corridors and hidden passages, striking without mercy.

Ellyn fought fiercely, her dagger flashing in the dim light. Yet even she noticed the hesitation in certain soldiers—men who should have defended the palace but instead hesitated, giving shadows an opening.

Flagg watched from the tower above, unseen, his lips curling in a silent smile. The seeds of betrayal he had planted had borne fruit. Deline was bleeding from the inside.

Part IV – The Eye's Urgency

Amid the chaos, Isolde felt the Eye pulsing stronger than ever. It flared gold, as though urging her to act. She extended her hand, unleashing a torrent of light that burned through the halls, scattering the invading shadows.

But with every pulse, the golden veins in her arms spread further, now reaching her shoulders and neck. Pain lanced through her veins, and she gasped.

Lucan caught her mid-fall. "You cannot carry this alone, Isolde! Let me—"

"No!" she cried, shaking her head. "It is the Eye. I must face this, or the palace will fall."

Her voice echoed down the halls, both command and warning. The remaining loyal soldiers rallied, pushing back the shadows—but at a cost. Many lay wounded, and several corridors were left open for the enemy to return.

Part V – Confrontation with Rylan

Isolde found Rylan at the top of the main tower, the wind tugging at his cloak. His sword was drawn, but his eyes held fear, not courage.

"Why?" she demanded, her voice shaking with anger and betrayal. "Why betray us?"

Rylan faltered. "Flagg… he promised power… protection… he said you were too dangerous… too powerful… the Eye cannot be controlled."

Her hand flared with golden light. "You served the wrong master, Rylan. And now Deline will suffer for it."

Before he could respond, the light surged, pushing him back against the parapet. He barely escaped, leaping into the shadows below.

Lucan arrived at her side, breathless. "We cannot let this continue. Flagg's hand is in everything. He manipulates from the shadows. But he will not win—not while we stand together."

Part VI – A City Shaken

By nightfall, the palace and city were scarred. Fires burned along the outer walls, wards flickered weakly, and the survivors tended to both the wounded and the shaken.

King Philip sat heavily in his chamber, eyes haunted. "Betrayal… from our own people. How can a king hold a kingdom together when trust has vanished?"

Isolde approached, golden veins dimming slightly. "Father… the court may be fractured, but Deline is not lost. We still have each other. And the Eye shows me a path—difficult, yes, but one that can save us all."

Lucan placed a hand on her shoulder. "We endure. That is all we can do. And then we strike back—with precision, not fear."

Part VII – The Shadow of the Crown

Far to the north, in the dark lands of Eryndor, the Black Crown stirred. The reports of internal betrayal, of chaos within Deline, pleased it.

Its shadow stretched like ink across the map, reaching for the city, but it waited. Patient. Watching. The true test was not yet upon it.

Flagg, in his hidden tower, smiled. "The palace bleeds, my precious shadows. Soon, the crown itself will rise—and no golden light will stop it."

And so Deline slept fitfully, its walls scarred, its loyalties fractured, and its defenders weary. The breach within had begun—and the kingdom would never be the same.
