Chapter 30 - Chapter 30 – After the First Pillar

Part I – Silent Streets

Deline awoke to a city hushed. Smoke lingered in the streets, and the debris of last night's battle still lay scattered across courtyards and alleyways. Soldiers moved cautiously, wary of another sudden assault.

Isolde walked among them, her golden-marked arms dim but still visible beneath her sleeves. Children peeked from behind doorways, and merchants whispered her name in reverence and fear.

Lucan followed closely, observing the city's defenses. "They will strike again," he said quietly. "The shadows are learning. And Flagg… he is watching."

Isolde nodded, feeling the lingering pulse of the Eye beneath the palace. Its whisper lingered in her mind, urgent and insistent.

Part II – The King's Counsel

King Philip summoned the royal family to the council chamber. Despite the city's scars, the room was tense with expectation. Nobles who had wavered during the last assault now watched closely, unsure whether Isolde's power could continue to protect them.

Philip's voice was heavy. "Deline survived the night, thanks to my children and the loyal soldiers. But we cannot rely on miracles alone. We must prepare for what is coming."

Flagg sat silently, a shadow among shadows. His eyes glimmered with satisfaction as murmurs filled the room. He had sown fear and doubt, but now it was time to test the loyalty of those who had survived.

Lucan spoke next. "Father, the first pillar has been struck, but the Eye has shown us more. We must act with strategy, not haste. Those who betrayed us once may attempt again, and the shadows will exploit it."

Philip nodded, torn between fear and pride. "Then we prepare—walls, troops, and counsel. Nothing can be left to chance."

Part III – The Eye's Next Vision

Late that evening, Isolde returned to the hidden chamber beneath the palace. The Eye pulsed stronger than ever, golden light filling the room and warming her face.

Visions appeared in rapid succession:

The Black Crown rising above the northern mountains, its shadow consuming villages.

The betrayal of allies, some of whom she had trusted.

A fortress of stone and light, surrounded by a river of molten gold.

The Eye whispered, urgent and unyielding:

"The second pillar lies where the old and new collide. Trust cannot be absolute. Seek the one who knows the forgotten paths."

Isolde trembled, the weight of the vision pressing on her. "The second pillar… but who knows these paths?"

Lucan, standing behind her, placed a steady hand on her shoulder. "We find them. Whoever they are, we must. If the first pillar was survival, the second is strategy."

Part IV – Shadows in the North

Far to the north, scouts reported new movements. The shadow army had reorganized, this time with greater coordination and larger creatures leading the vanguard.

A figure cloaked in black stood at the front—the Black Crown itself, radiating power that made even seasoned scouts falter. Its shadow stretched across the frozen plains, moving as if alive, testing the loyalty of every soldier and civilian in its path.

Flagg, in his hidden tower, watched these reports with delight. "They are reacting exactly as I predicted. Fear will fracture them. Shadows and light, brother against sister, court against court. Soon… soon, the crown will rise, and Deline will kneel."

Part V – Rebuilding Trust

Within the palace, Isolde and Lucan worked to mend the fractures left by betrayal. Knights who had resisted her before now pledged loyalty anew, inspired by her courage and the victory at the first pillar.

Yet suspicion lingered. Each noble and captain seemed to weigh their words carefully, unsure whether their loyalty to Isolde—or fear of Flagg—would be their undoing.

Ellyn, ever vigilant, whispered to Isolde, "Even among allies, some hearts waver. Trust must be earned again."

Isolde nodded, her eyes hardened. "Then we earn it. One battle, one act of courage at a time. The Eye will guide us, but we must act. Otherwise, everything we've built will fall to shadows."

Part VI – A Quiet Resolve

That night, atop the palace walls, Lucan and Isolde stood in silence, gazing at the northern horizon. Fires burned in distant villages, smoke drifting toward the mountains where the Black Crown lingered.

"The Eye showed us the second pillar," Lucan said quietly. "We know where we must go, and what we must find."

Isolde's eyes glimmered with determination. "Then we gather what we need, and we prepare. The crown rises, but so will we."

The wind carried faint whispers from the Eye and the distant Black Crown alike. Both threatened, both urged action, but Isolde and Lucan were ready. Together, they would face the next trial.
