The declaration hung in the air, a promise of fire and vengeance that reignited the weary souls of the pirates. They had a captain. They had a purpose. They were going home.
The journey back to the New World was a period of strange, chaotic healing. The fleet, now a bizarre menagerie of pirates, a Ex Admiral, and a runaway princess with a bottomless stomach, began to find its new rhythm.
Kuzan was a source of constant, lazy amusement. He spent most of his days napping on a block of ice he'd attached to the Moby Dick's railing, occasionally freezing a Sea King that got too close without even opening his eyes. The crew, initially cautious of him, slowly came to view him as their weird, overpowered house guest.
Bonney, on the other hand, was a whirlwind of flustered energy. She spent her days either devouring the ship's entire food supply or pointedly avoiding Ace, her tough-girl act failing miserably whenever he got too close. After the battle, she had used her power to age herself down to her true form—a scrawny, scrappy twelve-year-old—to conserve energy, a fact that sent Ace into a fresh wave of "FBI" panic.
"She's a child, Marco!" he hissed to his first mate one afternoon, watching as Bonney tried to arm-wrestle Jozu and lost spectacularly. "A child with a one hundred forty million-berry bounty on her head who thinks I'm some kind of... fairytale prince! What am I supposed to do with that?!"
Marco just shrugged, a deeply amused grin on his face. "You're the captain. You figure it out. But I will suggest you to wait 10 years."
The moment they crossed the Red Line, the mood shifted. This was enemy territory now. They convened in the captain's quarters, the map of the New World spread out before them.
"Teach's movements have been predictable," Marco reported, pointing to a string of islands. "He's been absorbing Pops's most profitable territories, the ones with weapon factories and trade routes. But he made one mistake. He overextended."
Ace's eyes scanned the map "He left his back door open," he said, his finger landing on a small, seemingly insignificant island. "Sphinx."
The commanders fell silent. Sphinx was not a strategic or wealthy island. It was Whitebeard's home, the place he was born, the place he protected not for profit, but for love. It was a symbol.
"Teach left it to one of his new recruits," Marco said, his voice grim. "The Tenth Titanic Captain, a man known as 'Corrupt Blade' Grado. He's not one of the original Impel Down escapees, but he's vicious."
"Then he'll be the first to fall," Ace said, his voice cold as ice. "We're not going to attack Teach's empire. We're going to carve out its heart." His plan was simple and brutal. They would make a surgical strike on Sphinx. It was a message. A declaration.
The night before they arrived, Ace found Bonney staring out at the sea, looking small and lost. "You're thinking about your dad, aren't you?" he asked softly.
She flinched but didn't deny it. "He's out there somewhere. A slave for those Celestial Dragon scum. And I... I can't do anything."
"That's not true," Ace said. He looked her in the eye. "My brother made a promise to me. And I'm making one to you. After we take back our home, after we deal with Teach... we're going to find your father. And we are going to save him."
The sincerity in his voice was absolute. Bonney stared at him, her vision blurring with tears. He wasn't just saving her; he was promising to save her entire world.
When they arrived at Sphinx, the island was a grim sight. Blackbeard's flag hung from the homes of a terrified populace. In the main town, a large, brutish man with a sword that dripped with some kind of acidic poison was lording over the villagers.
Ace didn't wait for a fleet action. He, Marco, and Kuzan descended from the sky.
The battle was not a battle. It was a statement. Marco, a blue phoenix, disarmed the fodder pirates with a single fiery pass. Kuzan, with a lazy wave of his hand, encased the entire town square in a thin, non-lethal layer of ice, preventing any of them from escaping.
And Ace walked directly up to Grado.
"You're on my father's land," Ace said, his voice dangerously quiet. "You're flying the flag of the man who murdered my brother. You have one seconds to get off this island before I burn you and that filthy rag from the face of the earth."
Grado just laughed. "You think you can scare me, Son of Roger?!" He swung his poison-dripping blade.
Ace didn't even draw his sword. He caught the flat of the blade in his open palm, his Armament Haki so dense it neutralized the acid on contact, the poison sizzling into harmless vapor. He looked the terrified pirate dead in the eye, his own pupils turn fiery.
"Mistake."
He ignited. Not with a wild inferno, but with a controlled, white-hot flame that consumed Grado's sword, his arm, and then his entire body in a silent, searing flash. When the light faded, there was nothing left but a pile of ash where the Tenth Titanic Captain had been.
Ace walked to the flagpole, tore down Blackbeard's flag, and set it ablaze. He turned to the stunned, silent villagers.
"This island is under the protection of the Burning Crown Pirates!" he declared, his voice a roar that echoed across the island. "Our father is alive! And we have come home!"
For a moment, there was silence. Then, a single, tentative cheer. It was followed by another, and another, until the entire island erupted in a deafening, joyous roar. They were free.
As his crew began to celebrate with the locals, Ace stood on a cliff overlooking the sea, the cheers of his people a warm balm on his soul. This was the first step. The first domino had fallen.
