Chapter 43 - Chapter 43: Final conclusion

"If its effect is really as you say..." Max asked cautiously. "May I be so bold as to ask for your identity?"

"My apologies, I completely forgot to introduce myself earlier, but it's not too late to do so now."

Morin suddenly realized, took out his ID from his coat which was actually his storage space and showed it to Max.

"Who do you think a person with the latest weapon developed by the IRS equipment department would be?"

"I see, so you're from the IRS," Max said, seeing Morin's ID. She was relieved and regained her composure.

"I imagine this isn't really within your jurisdiction, is it?"

"Hmm... In normal circumstances, it wouldn't be, but this time, the situation is a little special." Morin pulled two pairs of handcuffs from his bag and placed them in front of Max.

"Because you were involved in an illegal transaction with a US agent, and that person didn't pay taxes, we have a legitimate opportunity to intervene. And we're working with the CIA, so we have jurisdiction."

"So, should I put these handcuffs on you, or would you like to put them on yourself?"

"You're talking about Ethan?" Max said with a flat face.

"Ethan? Are they talking about you?" Morin looked behind Max. "Ethan, come here."

"I think so." Ethan walked over with a smile on his face. Morin moved aside, letting Ethan sit opposite Max.

"You're working together?" Max was shocked.

"Please don't use such an unprofessional term to describe our friendly partnership," Morin said, playing with the handcuffs.

"This is an international collaboration between the CIA and the IRS, a beginning of a friendly exchange."

"Yes, that's right." Ethan nodded. "Ms. Max, as you wished, I'm now sitting right in front of you."

"I suddenly don't want to see you anymore." Max's face was extremely ugly. She realized she had been completely played by Ethan!

"That's a sad thing to hear," Ethan said, shrugging helplessly.

"I thought we would have a lot to talk about, like the sixteen million dollars you traded with Agent Jim, who is also known as Job."

"What? No, I didn't. The ten million..." Max stopped halfway through, seeming to realize something, and stared at Ethan thoughtfully.

"To get the list of all CIA agents, you traded with the CIA traitor, Agent Jim, for a total of sixteen million dollars, six million first, then another ten million." Morin said.

"Ethan, in order to stop your illegal transaction, found me, and we successfully stopped you. How does that story sound?"

"It's very good," Ethan nodded. "Also, during the capture, Agent Jim resisted fiercely, first killing Agent Claire, then, knowing he couldn't escape, he destroyed the ten million US Treasury cash coupons, and was finally killed by me and Agent Morin working together."

"You... you're trying to pocket the sixteen million dollars!" Max's eyes widened. She finally understood what Morin and Ethan were saying.

They were creating a final conclusion for this event to cover up their actions and even embezzle the sixteen million dollars!

"Perhaps I should add 'slander of public officials' to your list of crimes?" Morin said in a low voice.

"Shall I tell you who is in command of this operation and that you will be detained in an IRS-controlled prison?"

The information Morin's words revealed made Max's

blood run cold.

"I just want to know..." Max's face was stiff. "If I spend another ten million, would you sell me that product of yours?"

"This thing?" Morin patted the jammer in his hand. "The price has gone up. It's now one hundred million dollars."

...

Max, of course, didn't have that much money to pay the exorbitant price Morin was asking. So, she surrendered directly and let Ethan put the handcuffs on her.

Morin looked up at the ceiling of the train car. "What's wrong?"

Ethan asked, noticing Morin's strange movement.

"I seem to have forgotten something," Morin replied.

"There's still a little fly up there."

Above, Franz Krieger, who was preparing to meet Jim (the actor who played the hitman in L'on: The Professional and played the action assistant and supplier that Ethan recruited in this movie, was actually a collaborator with Jim), was following the train in a helicopter.

He was a little confused. Where was the person he was supposed to meet? Where did Jim go?

He wasn't worried about Jim's safety. The ten million dollars Jim had was the thing he cared about!

"But, we don't need to bother with him. Let him go," Morin said, thinking about how difficult it would be to capture Franz and what the gains would be.

He decisively abandoned the capture plan and changed the subject. "I have to say, Ethan, your choice really impressed me."

"...I had to," Ethan said, after a moment of silence. He knew what Morin was talking about.

"If they didn't die, I couldn't face my comrades."

"Very good. Being able to be ruthless is the mark of a qualified agent. And you also gave Agent Claire a good reputation and maintained your principles," Morin said, patting Ethan on the shoulder.

"You've grown a lot."

"You don't look that much older than me, so why do you always speak and act like... a senior?"

Ethan said, speechless.

"..." Morin stared at Ethan. The death glare! How dare he say I'm old, damn it!

"It seems you still need some good training, Ethan," Morin said, putting his hand on Ethan's shoulder and "gently" kneading it.

"Especially when it comes to talking..."

"Ouch, ouch, ouch!"

...

After the train arrived at the station, the bodies of Claire and Jim were secretly taken away by the subordinates Morin had arranged beforehand.

As for Ethan's innocence, that was not an issue. The two of them corroborated their stories... no, they discussed the details and objectives of the operation.

Then, Morin wrote the report for this major international joint operation and submitted it to Director Chris. After Chris reviewed and stamped it, he mailed it to IMF Director Eugene.

Eugene, who had been like an ant on a hot pan, was ecstatic when he received the letter, as if a life-saving rain had fallen. It's normal for things to expand and contract with heat.

Eugene read the contents of the document and, after careful consideration, finally understood everything.

First, he had indeed identified Ethan as a traitor.

However, Ethan was not the traitor; he was framed. The traitor was Jim, who had faked his death.

Ethan, who had been framed and knew he couldn't prove his innocence, found IRS agent Morin and asked for his assistance.

Then, Ethan, in collaboration with the IRS, first took the list of agents from within the CIA as a token, approached Max, arrested her, and then lured Jim out to capture him.

Claire unfortunately died during this process. Of course, the email did not mention that Ethan had stolen the CIA agent list or that he had been framed.

It said that IMF Director Eugene was aware of the entire process and that Ethan was acting under orders all along.

Eugene understood that this was a step down from Ethan and the IRS. A step that would allow him to keep his current position but would leave him with something the IRS and Ethan could hold over him.

What was his choice? It wasn't even a question. Eugene took a deep breath and signed his name on the document.

With that, the matter was settled. The first joint international major operation between the IRS Special Agent Division and the CIA's IMF Division was a complete success!
