Ye Lan made up an excuse.
He didn't want anyone to know about his Sharingan yet. He didn't want people to look at him differently. He wanted to keep his ninjutsu a secret. Knowing his own abilities allowed him to surprise opponents in battle, and even though Kakashi was his teacher, he didn't want to reveal all his cards.
Having the Sharingan was also somewhat taboo in the world of Naruto, considering the timeline.
As far as the ninja village knew, Sasuke was the only one with the Sharingan. The fact that Ye Lan now had it was like Itachi hadn't just spared Sasuke, but had also spared him, or that he was a separate entity. Itachi had killed the entire Uchiha Clan, leaving only Sasuke.
Now, Ye Lan possessed the Sharingan. There were only two possibilities: either he was from the Uchiha Clan, which was clearly not the case, or he had obtained it from an Uchiha in some way. That would give Konohagakure plenty of reason to punish him. He didn't want to reveal this too soon and cause unnecessary trouble. It was better for everyone this way.
Kakashi didn't press the matter when Ye Lan said nothing. Kakashi then said to Ye Lan, "Well, since there's nothing going on right now, you can go home for now. I'll let you know if I need you."
Ye Lan shook his head awkwardly and said, "Um, Teacher Kakashi, I don't have my own room yet."
"How about you arrange one for me?"
Kakashi looked at Ye Lan with some embarrassment and then said, "Really, I almost forgot about this. How about this? Konohagakure has many places to accommodate outsiders. I'll arrange a dormitory for you for now. After a while, I'll arrange a house of your own for you. How does that sound? It might cost some money, just rent, that's all. What do you think?"
Ye Lan was overjoyed when he heard this. Of course, he had no objections. Having a place to live was great for him. He didn't want to think too much about anything else.
Kakashi saw that he had no objections and said, "Alright, I'll take you to your room first."
Kakashi led Ye Lan westward for a while and then stopped at a place similar to an inn, saying, "This is the place. It's a bit like a guesthouse. There are usually many ninjas from other villages staying here. And the place I arranged for you is only for Jonin to live in. It's one room per person, and the conditions are quite good. I hope you enjoy it."
Ye Lan quickly waved his hand. "Teacher Kakashi, what are you saying? Having a house to live in is already great for me. How could I ask about the quality of the house? As long as I have a place to live, that's all that matters. I don't want to think too much about anything else. And thank you for always doing so much for me and finding a house for me."
Kakashi waved his hand casually and said, "This is only right. After all, I'm your teacher."
