Chapter 169 - What a Guardian Does

In the control room of the base where Jonathan was located, there were numerous workers in charge of monitoring and managing information coming from other bases and sectors. The main task of the team was to secure information and pass it on in a summarized manner to the containment team against dark entities of any kind.

When Jonathan entered the office, he immediately drew the attention of all the personnel inside. "Greetings to the Guardian!" they all shouted as they gave a standard military salute.

"Get back to work without paying attention to me, I want everything to keep moving." Jonathan walked toward his office without stopping.

Just as he was about to reach his room, a woman in a suit stood professionally in front of Jonathan.

"Sir, I am Alice!" With a simple military salute, Alice introduced herself and said, "I worked in the logistics forces in a governmental section, but I have been transferred to this place to serve you."

"From now on, I will be your chief secretary and will be in charge of managing your affairs and future meetings. Please, do not forget to leave me any task you need." Alice said as she extended her hand toward Jonathan, who was looking at her.

"Just do your job well. I want the new program I will take on as a Guardian against dark entities as soon as possible," Jonathan said as he entered his office.

"Understood."

Letting out a sigh of relief, Jonathan walked into his office. The room was far too large and very spacious; there was a row of expensive armchairs in the center of the room and a desk in the corner. More than a room to work in, it would be better considered a room for private meetings.

Jonathan walked without paying much attention to the meticulous room and prepared himself to work. In his mind, he could not stop thinking about his new job and responsibilities.

Knock! Knock! Knock!

Jonathan silently looked toward the entrance of the room. The first thing he needed to prioritize was the new method established by the high command to secure incursions of dark entities without being noticed by the public.

"Come in…"

Jonathan stood up from his desk and walked toward the sofas in the center of the room.

"These are the reports you requested. If you wish, I can summarize the information so it will be quicker to go through," Alice said, waiting silently for Jonathan's response.

Silently looking at the thick document, Jonathan nodded his head. He was not sure how long it would take him to analyze the information, but right now he was running out of time.

"Take a seat, you can explain it to me in a quick and direct way." Jonathan skimmed through the thick document without looking at Alice, but even if he did not see her, he still needed to personally keep up with the explanation.

Alice took a deep breath and, taking a seat, reviewed documents on her smart tablet.

"At the beginning of this year, urban operations were taken more seriously in various countries due to the fact that they were becoming increasingly frequent. Together with the Order, their numbers increased with the help of soldiers retired from the armies of many countries. The purpose of increasing their forces was to avoid revealing corporeal dark entities to the entire world."

Jonathan nodded in understanding. The National Security Council had taken a long time to respond to the sudden outbreak of corporeal dark entities all over the world. Fortunately, there were special forces groups within the armies that supported the priests in their elimination missions.

"After many discussions among the world governments, the special department of the Association of Light was approved with the purpose of confronting dark entities around the world above all else."

"Let's skip the parts that have nothing to do with our jurisdiction. What are the governmental privileges that the department of the Order has?"

"Uh… yes. The power granted to you as a Guardian is superior to that of most organizations in the world, with the sole purpose of eliminating dark entities and responding to distress calls."

"You will answer to no one except the head of the Belmont family; therefore, you are practically untouchable around the world."

"No government will interfere, that includes the president?" Jonathan asked doubtfully. It was known that the acting president is the supreme commander of the Armed Forces of each country, and they should be informed of every operation in order to decide whether to interfere or not.

"The president will not interfere in the work of the Order or the Church of Healing. It was determined that the special department against anomalies would have full authority to protect the country and keep the emergence of monsters hidden." Alice paused and added, "But as long as the Association of Light has the advantage in the fight against dark entities, there is no need for the army to intervene publicly."

"Then, each base of the Order together with the Exorcists will be supervised by a Guardian assigned to each province and its respective metropolitan cities."

Jonathan already had an idea of the entire new program that the government had developed in collaboration with the Church of Healing solely to confront dark entities.

Jonathan, and anyone else, no matter how capable they were, would have doubts and would remain confused for some time by the sudden stress that came with being a Guardian. Everything was sudden, and it would take time to adapt to an entirely new system.

"During the following months, the scale of your operations will increase to more than one city or community, and you will respond directly to the Church as your only leader." When Alice's words reached Jonathan's ears, a sudden chill ran through his body as he grasped the idea that his workload would increase.

"I'll die from labor exploitation…" When the short sentence left Jonathan's lips, the feeling of pressure overwhelmed him once again. No, after this, he would definitely refuse to be promoted in rank.

"Sorry, is everything all right, sir?" Alice was confused.

Jonathan was pulled out of his racing thoughts. "It's nothing, I was thinking about something else. By the way, how many bases are there in the whole country?"

"That information is not something I am qualified to know. Surely you are, but as your secretary, I am not authorized," Alice said. She knew very little, but continued, "Counting the nine provinces, six metropolitan cities, and one special metropolitan city for this country's capital, response teams were barely distributed in proportion to the number of minor entities that include cities, counties, or districts."

"Considering all of the above, the hidden bases of the Association of Light should not exceed a thousand, but once again, those are only my statistics."

"That sounds much safer. What happened with the recent murders should not be repeated." Jonathan recalled that not long ago, a boy who had been possessed by an evil spirit massacred more than forty people using bladed weapons before being taken down by the police. That had been a true disaster.

After answering all of Jonathan's questions, Alice smiled modestly and left the room. After remaining in silence, Jonathan looked at the old-fashioned room and his figure reflected in the wine bottles on a shelf. "I've leveled up. My job will be harder, but I'll be able to carry out my revenge against the mafia…"

If he wanted to kill those who had hurt old Harry, he first had to stabilize his work and proceed with caution so as not to expose his identity as a Guardian, and thus not expose himself. For this, he had many ways to do it, so before the suits arrived, he first needed to establish authority in this place.

"I'll return home early…"
