Chapter 53 - Energy

A few days had passed since Enid had set aside her investigation that led nowhere and focused on her team to win the Poe Cup.

Meanwhile, Wednesday sought guidance from Jonathan about dark entities and how she could use her ability to help him.

Since then, Jonathan practiced with her, using his skill to see if she was capable of glimpsing the future he so desperately wanted to uncover.

The things around him were changing, becoming more unpredictable, and that was bad. That was why he needed Wednesday's abilities—she could spy into the future and give him guidance on his missions.

Not only that, she was being instructed in theoretical matters and he was also teaching her how to fight.

Father Doug, during a weapons class, shook his head and said: "No, as a field agent you can't be a hero, or your life will slip out of your body before you even realize it."

"Aren't they that?" Wednesday was confused by Jonathan's anger; if they were hunters, they were supposed to hunt the beast.

"Rule number eight: if we are alone and cannot win a battle, we avoid it, even if that means letting some people die."

Father Doug knew this sounded harsh, but he explained: "A field agent's life is ten times more valuable than a civilian's life. You have the data: a field agent saves 2,000 people a year and takes around 5 years to train."

The explanation was simple and easy to understand: one could not sacrifice themselves in normal cases because an agent's life was more valuable than that of a civilian.

If the agent stayed alive, he could save more civilians and be useful later on.

Jonathan nodded slightly, sharing the same point of view, and pointed out: "Unless you can face the threat, you can't make a move. If you can't, then wait for reinforcements to arrive."

That was the reality. Wednesday understood it perfectly, but even so, she questioned Jonathan, who had just joined the conversation: "How is it that you've earned your family's respect as a Belmont?"

"I'm different, not as human as you think." Jonathan said this and finally stopped, lifted his gaze, and added: "I can't be killed because I've made many sacrifices throughout my life. I regret doing it, but in the end, nothing matters if we're dead."

Wednesday raised her eyebrows and said: "You've got a good point. I don't complain about my life, though I feel more vulnerable when I think I could be attacked by anything."

"That's the reality, you're human. But any human can kill men, wolves, or vampires with the right weaponry." Father Doug had killed more supernatural beings than people. He was an ordinary human, so he knew Wednesday could become a very good hunter if trained properly.

"Can I be stronger than werewolves?" Wednesday was pleasantly surprised by this.

"Then how do you think we're winning?" asked Father Doug, a bit annoyed by that lack of respect.

"You're optimistic. If you were winning, you wouldn't be here. It's obvious you're overloaded with work, exploited, and barely have time to rest."

Jonathan nodded and with a not-so-loud laugh said: "That's the sacrifice we make so that some can live their lives."

"That's true, so let's get to training." Father Doug set aside the cigarette in his mouth and walked to the shooting range to teach Wednesday a bit about gunpowder.

But at that moment, before things could get more intense, a call interrupted Jonathan's thoughts. "Who's speaking?"

"Zz… Direct report with the regent, current location Jericho, are you ready for report?"

"Proceed."

"Zz… Sir, we detected that a surge of malignant energy burst out a few days ago in Jericho. Due to the barrier at Nevermore Academy, we only just became aware of it."

Jonathan's expression hardened and he asked: "Estimated strength?"

"Zz… The largest we've detected in that location. A special team has been dispatched and will arrive this afternoon."

When Jonathan heard this, he shook his head slightly.

He recognized his family, but not to what extent the Belmonts controlled hunter advances.

If his family was independent from the church, it would be a good idea to use the strength they provided.

"I'll take care of it," said Jonathan, setting aside all his other commitments.

Father Doug, who was arranging the weapons, asked: "New orders?"

"Inform the principal to shut down listening, clear the plaza to gather my people as soon as possible." Jonathan stood up, looked into a mirror, and seeing that black suit, pistols visible along with his sword, shook his head.

The next few days would be a little more hectic, especially with that dark entity that seemed to have already been playing in his backyard for some time.

He had to get to work, especially since the police in this town weren't prepared for operations against dark entities.

"I'll be back soon."
