Chapter 8 - Fifty Years Ago

Raiven stood in front of a door that had '1A' boldly written on it.

'Here we go...'

Taking a deep breath, he entered the classroom.

The chatters of the students filled the air, slamming into Raiven as soon as he entered the classroom.

They were too focused on their conversations to even realize that someone had just entered the classroom, but those who noticed him instantly began whispering among themselves.

"He's the one who awakened a Disaster Rank Ability, right?"

"Yes. Beast Summoning."

"Wow. I'm jealous. What Beast do you think he can summon?"

Raiven looked around, checking for vacant seats.

Luckily, there were two vacant seats at the back, and one was directly beside the window.

The perfect spot.

There was a seat in-between the two vacant seats. But as soon as Raiven saw who was seated on it, his smile vanished.

With her blue hair fluttering lightly, and a smile on her face, Yenna waved at Raiven.

'Fuck my life...'

Raiven took slow steps towards the back of the class where the seats were present.

"Good morning, Raiven," Yenna said, her lips curled upwards.

Raiven released a small smile.

"Good morning..."

He reluctantly sat on the seat beside the window.

It wasn't like he had any other choice. Yenna was in-between the two vacant seats.

Now, only one seat was vacant in the entire classroom.

That meant...

'One student has not arrived...'

Raiven silently hoped it wasn't Avin.

It wasn't like Avin would try anything in class, but Raiven would definitely receive blood-curling stares from him.

'And I definitely won't be comfortable with that.'

"You're doing it again."

A voice suddenly interrupted Raiven's thoughts.

Raiven turned, his eyes meeting Yenna's eyes.

"What?"

Yenna raised a brow.

"You were spacing out... Again."

Raiven chuckled lightly. "My bad."

'Ah, I can't control it,' he thought. 'I never thought that habit would follow me to a new world.'

At that moment, someone walked into the class, making Raiven and Yenna look at the door.

Immediately Raiven saw who it was, a mix of satisfaction and relief filled him.

"Thank goodness. At least, I won't be gazed at during class," Raiven muttered.

Muriel walked into the classroom, his usual playful smile on his lips.

The girls stared at him with stars in their eyes as he walked past them and sat down on the only vacant seat beside Yenna.

"Of course, the Disaster Rank Ability users will sit down together," a boy whispered to his friend.

Well, Raiven didn't really care about all that.

He was just relieved.

Muriel and Yenna's eyes met, and Muriel winked at her.

Yenna scoffed, looking away.

"ALRIGHT! EVERYONE, SIT DOWN!"

The most cheerful voice Raiven had ever heard flowed into his ears.

It came from the man who just entered the classroom.

He was wearing a casual black shirt and grey trousers.

He had an insanely wide smile on his face like nothing could ever make him sad in this world.

The chatter in the class stopped as everyone focused on him.

"My name is Josh, and I'm your homeroom teacher!"

Josh didn't even bother to mention his surname which further confirmed the fact that he really was just a chill guy.

'If only my chemistry teacher on Earth was like this, I wouldn't have gotten an 'E'...'

Josh continued,

"Since classes just began today, we'll refresh our memory on how the world changed, and after that, you all go to the Soul Arts class.

Now, let's make this interactive, shall we? Who can tell me how the world transformed?"

"It started fifty years ago," Yenna suddenly said.

Well, it was an interactive session, so there was really no rule that one should raise their hand before speaking.

She continued,

"Beasts suddenly appeared out of nowhere. They fell from the sky. They emerged from the seas, and even already existing animals mutated, turning into these Beasts."

She paused, relaxed on her chair, and continued,

"60% of humanity was wiped out in the first two years."

She smiled as she said this part, which Raiven found very disturbing.

'The author wasn't exaggerating at all,' Raiven thought. 'She definitely has some screws loose.'

Though, considering how brutal and deadly this world was, Raiven didn't really find it odd.

'Insanity is the norm in this world...'

Yenna continued talking,

"Cities collapsed, and nuclear weapons did nothing against the Beasts."

"Then, one day, the Beasts suddenly disappeared," Muriel suddenly said as he glanced at Yenna with a smile.

He folded his arms.

"Immediately the Beasts disappeared, humans began developing strange abilities. And then, a system screen appeared in front of people."

"Exactly!" Josh roared. "You're on the right track!"

Everyone turned to look at Muriel. They stared at him with admiration like he wasn't just saying what everyone already knew.

To most of the girls, he was a god who was blessing them with his wise words.

Muriel continued,

"The system explained that Abilities came from the soul, and that everyone had a Soul Path, and Soul Energy was like a fuel needed to use Soul Energy.

But the System refused to explain where it came from or what caused the appearance of Beasts and mutation of animals."

"Correct!" Josh roared once again.

Muriel was about to continue, but Yenna quickly spoke this time.

"A few years later, the World Soul Organization was formed. Global governments collapsed and world leaders were replaced by awakened individuals."

Yenna glanced at Muriel and winked at him.

At this point, it was already looking like a competition.

She continued,

"Four continents were created. The Alpha Continent which we currently are. The Diamond Continent, the Obsidian Continent, and the Sunflower Continent. Each of these continents is governed by a branch of the WSO."

"Good!" Josh said. "And what does the WSO take charge of?"

Apart from Yenna and Muriel, nobody else in the class was talking again.

It was almost as if talking had become a sin.

Yenna instantly answered.

"The WSO takes charge of research about Abilities, creation of Academies, and new laws."

"Great! Now wh—"

"A few years later, the first set of Holes appeared," Muriel said, interrupting Josh.

He smirked at Yenna.

"Due to fear of the unknown, nobody entered the Hole, and after seven days, Beasts poured out of the Holes. Luckily, the Beasts were killed using Soul Abilities, and that was when Beast Shard was discovered... A shard that was found in the bodies of the Beasts..."

Suddenly, another boy spoke,

"These shards brought technological evolution, and weapons capable of killing Beasts were created with these shards. Other aspects of technology also benefited from these shards."

The boy folded his arms as he concluded,

"After that, the law was implemented. Every Hole that appears must be cleared within seven days. Even if it isn't cleared, it should be entered regularly."

Raiven looked at the boy.

'Hmm, I think he awakened a Calamity Rank Ability related to tech in the awakening ceremony...'

"Perfect!" Josh beamed. "And that's it... How the world changed fifty years ago.

Now, I will give you all a list of the courses available, and you all must decide the courses you will take by tomorrow," Josh said as he began sharing a paper containing the list of courses to the students in the class.

"After receiving your paper, wait for the others, because it's time for the Soul Arts course. It's a compulsory course for every student."

'Ah, finally,' Raiven thought.

It was finally time to learn some real skills.

The only downside was that he would meet Avin there since it was a general class.

But for now, he wasn't worried much about that.

'The Solo Hole Entry is in two days... I have to learn as much as I can...'

Raiven clenched his fists.

'I have to survive...'
