Chapter 14 - Mistakes and consequences

The battle was over, but the streets still smelled of smoke and fire. Lanterns flickered weakly in the morning breeze, casting long shadows over the quiet alleys. The team was exhausted, battered, and in shock.

Kael stood at the edge of the harbor, eyes scanning the distant horizon. The three ancient allies had already vanished into the shadows, their powerful presence leaving a calm weight behind. Kael turned to Riven. "Do what we always do," he said. "Erase what must be forgotten. Make sure no one outside remembers tonight."

Riven nodded silently. He raised his hands, and shadows kept over the streets, soft and quiet. The images of fire, fighting, and fear began to vanish from the minds of anyone who had glimpsed them. Memories of the battle were wiped clean, leaving only confusion where knowledge had been.

Meanwhile, Keiren moved swiftly along the alleys, checking every nearby surveillance camera, every lantern with a hidden lens. "CCTV wiped," he called to the team. "No one saw anything."

Dev and Nerion helped, clearing the streets, fixing broken stalls, and sweeping away Rubbish. Even Arin and Mira, despite their injuries, lent a hand. Sparks from Arin's fading flame lit small corners as Nerion calmed the harbor waters, pushing Rubbish back into the sea.

The work was quiet, methodical. No one spoke much. The team was drained, each lost in their own thoughts. Mira's gaze fell to the ground, her hands trembling slightly. She had survived, but the weight of the night pressed on her chest. Almost everyone had been injured. They had come close to losing their lives.

And it was her fault.

Every time she looked at Arin, Keiren, or the others, she felt the guilt twist tighter around her heart. She had led them into danger. She had left the hideout without permission. Every scar, every cut, every tremble of fear, she felt responsible.

The team sensed it too. They avoided her. Each time Mira tried to speak or apologize, someone would step aside, walk away, or change the subject. She couldn't blame them. She had almost gotten them killed.

Inside the hideout, the walls felt like prison, heavy with the tension of unspoken words. Mira stood at the entrance, glancing at the team. Arin sat quietly in the corner, nursing his burnt hands. Keiren cleaned his blades silently, avoiding her eyes. Elias paced with clenched fists, still tense from the fight. Even Kael stayed near the window, silent and watchful.

Mira took a deep breath, clutching the bandage on her arm. She had to do something. She could not let guilt destroy her. She could not let the team's anger define her forever.

She stepped forward, voice shaking at first. "I…" She swallowed hard, then lifted her head. "I know I made the biggest mistake tonight. I left the hideout. I let everyone down. I put all of you in danger. I....." Her voice cracked, but she pressed on. "I almost got everyone killed. And I am sorry. I am truly, deeply sorry."

A silence followed. No one spoke. Mira's heart pounded, but she didn't stop. She found strength somewhere inside herself, in the fear and guilt, in the determination to make things right.

"I know sorry doesn't fix the past," she said, eyes scanning every member. "I know I can't erase what happened. But I am willing to do everything to help. To fight harder, to be smarter, to protect everyone. Not because I want to, but because I owe it to all of you. You all risked your lives for me, and I can't let that be wasted."

Her voice grew stronger with each word. "I am just a kid, I know that. I make mistakes. I am scared, but I will not hide from that fear anymore. I will not run again. I want to stand with you. All of you. I want to be part of this team, not just as someone who follows, but as someone who fights with you, who grows with you, and who never forgets what this fight means."

Tears in her eyes, but her words were steady, filled with honesty and courage. She held out her hands, palms open, to the team.

The room was silent. Slowly, one by one, the members of the team looked up. Elias's eyes softened first. He ran a hand over his face and nodded. "You spoke the truth," he said. "That is more than some can do."

Elias pushed himself to his feet, rubbing his hands, then stepped toward Mira. "We've all made mistakes," he said quietly. "This fight… it's bigger than any one of us. You survived, and you're willing to fight again. That counts."

Keiren put his blades on the table and nodded . "We all owe you some forgiveness. You're part of the team. That doesn't change."

Dev and Nerion exchanged glances, then gave slight smiles. Even Riven, usually cold and distant, inclined his head in acknowledgment.

Mira let out a breath she didn't realize she had been holding. Relief and gratitude flooded her chest. She had faced her fear, admitted her fault, and now, the team had accepted her back. She was forgiven.

Kael stepped forward, placing a firm hand on her shoulder. "You are part of this team," he said. "Mistakes happen. What matters is that you learn and continue. Courage isn't the absence of fear. It's standing up despite it."

Mira nodded, feeling the weight lift slightly from her shoulders. She still felt guilty, but now she had purpose again. She would fight, she would protect, and she would grow.

The team gathered closer, sharing small smiles and quiet words. Arin's flames flickered lightly in the corner, Nerion's water ripples shimmered faintly, and Keiren's blades glinted in the morning light.

Even in the quiet aftermath, little moments of connection returned. Elias clapped Arin gently on the back. "You held your ground. That counts for more than you know."

Dev handed Mira a small cup of water. "Here. Even heroes need to drink," he said, a faint smile on his face. Mira laughed softly, the sound breaking some of the tension.

Keiren, still tense, muttered to Arin, "Next time, don't wander alone. Got it?" Arin grinned weakly. "I got it."

Riven, finally closing his book, looked at Mira and said in his low, calm voice, "Strength is not measured by perfection, child. Learn from this."

Mira swallowed hard and nodded. This was her chance to be stronger. Not just in power, but in heart. She could feel the team's acceptance slowly settling in, replacing fear with determination.

Outside, the streets were empty, silent, and calm. The humans who had hidden during the battle were beginning to step out, watching from behind shutters and windows. But the battle and its secrets were already gone. Memories wiped, CCTV cleared, the streets restored. No one would remember. No one would know.

Kael looked at the horizon, voice low but firm. "We are alive. We are together. But the enemy will not rest. Neither will we."

Mira stood a little taller, head high, feeling the team's warmth surround her. She was part of this. She was not alone.

Even as the sun rose over the harbor, casting long light across the streets, everyone knew this was only a brief peace. For now, they had survived. And they were together.
