Chapter 34 - Jorah's Spring

The day the Tournament began had arrived.

Tywin, who had served as Hand of the King for twenty years, had strongly promoted tournaments during his tenure. The arena in Lannisport was not a temporary structure; it was a dedicated venue built of stone. The jousting field was oval, dozens of meters long at its widest, with stands on either side that were over twenty meters high. It could accommodate thousands of spectators and was used for various performances.

Several Dukes and the King sat on the main platform. Witte's seat was behind the platform. There was still some time before the competition began, and everyone was chatting with those they knew.

Ned looked at Witte, and they nodded at each other, understanding each other implicitly. Ned had previously given Witte a small box, asking him to deliver it to his bastard daughter, Ashara.

The entire Tournament was a lively affair. Jorah Mormont was in high spirits during this Tournament, defeating strong opponents one after another. In the final match a few days later, he met Jaime Lannister. They fought nine rounds without a clear victor, and finally, Robert declared Jorah the champion.

Although Jaime Lannister lost the competition in front of his hometown people and didn't win the championship, Tywin was not unhappy, because the betting pool, controlled by Stannis, had made Tywin and Robert a lot of money.

Now, Stannis no longer needed Witte's guidance to manipulate the betting pool. This time, he was in complete control himself. Witte couldn't help but exclaim, "Unlike the original, Second Brother finally has a skill."

Witte found Jorah Mormont at the side of the Tournament stands. He was deep in conversation with his "Queen of Love and Beauty," Lynesse Hightower.

"Ser Witte."

"Ser Jorah."

Jorah and Witte had fought on the battlefield together. Their relationship had been quite good over the past month, but they still addressed each other formally in public.

"Long time no see, little Witte. You've grown taller," Lynesse said casually, smiling at Witte and reaching out to pat his head.

Lynesse and Gormon were siblings. Witte used to visit her home often when he was at the Citadel, telling jokes to make her laugh. They had a good relationship, and she was beautiful with golden hair and fair skin. Not just anyone got to touch a handsome man's head.

"Sister Lynesse, it has been a while."

Jorah was a little surprised. "You two know each other?"

"I studied at the Citadel for four years and knew Gormon Hightower. I often visited his home, so naturally, I knew Lynesse," Witte explained to Jorah.

"Previously, your Bear Island struggled with business due to the threat of Ironborn pirates. Now that the Iron Islands' threat is gone, the Ironborn will also be recruited into the Royal Fleet. Currently, only Bear Island, on the entire northern west coast, has a fleet. I have some transport business to discuss with you."

"The Bear Island Warriors will guarantee the safety of the goods with their lives!" As the Lord of Bear Island, Jorah's duty was to seek wealth for his family and people. However, he wasn't skilled at it. Now, business was coming to him, and he agreed without considering the risk.

"Food, vegetables, and other items transported to The North, as well as minerals and leather transported out of The North, aren't very expensive individually, but the volume is large," Witte began discussing details with Jorah.

Witte sought out Jorah for three reasons: first, to prevent the Lannisters from monopolizing the business on the northern west coast; although Bear Island's fleet was small, it would grow as they gained wealth. Second, to help Lynesse, so Jorah wouldn't be unable to support her and she wouldn't end up running to smuggle slaves and be wanted. Third, to reduce a future ally for the Dragon Queen, killing three birds with one stone.

Lynesse watched Witte and Jorah, believing Witte sought out Jorah because of her family. She was proud and happy, quietly watching the two converse.

Jorah thought it was because of Lynesse that Witte was doing business with him, and he was very glad he chose Lynesse to be the "Queen of Love and Beauty" today.

The Bear Island's Lord Jorah Mormont, though a bit older and not very handsome, had no children, and his wife had died in childbirth. He could be considered a golden bachelor.

Having distinguished himself on the battlefield and been knighted, and then winning the Tournament today, along with a hefty prize, he was on top of the world. That very evening, he proposed to Lynesse Hightower's father, Leyton Hightower. After some discussion, Leyton agreed and decided to hold the wedding in Lannisport while most of the nobles were still present.

At the wedding, Witte found Lynesse.

"The climate on Bear Island in The North is cold, much harsher than Oldtown. Bring plenty of warm clothes. If you need anything, you can write to your brother or me." He was giving her a heads-up, so she wouldn't feel embarrassed about asking her family; now, she could turn to her brother and Witte.

"I will," Lynesse said sadly, knowing she was leaving her family to start a new one.

Witte and Renly gave her many wedding gifts. Afterwards, they would also summon her sister, Moroa, to King's Landing to study magic. Although she was nearly 50 years old, she possessed a faint magical ability. They didn't expect her to master advanced spells, but she could at least become a librarian.

Ignoring Lynesse's family's status in Oldtown and the Citadel, her sister Alerie was the wife of Mace Tyrell, the Duke of Highgarden, and mother to Willas, Garlan, Loras, and Margaery, the future heirs of Highgarden. Just based on this relationship, they needed to cultivate ties. Witte and Renly's business required a lot of raw materials from The Reach.

The Reach had three great houses. The Tyrells and Hightowers had already established a relationship. Only the Redwynes remained to be courted. Leave that to Renly.

After returning to King's Landing, Robert quickly convened the Small Council and proposed the addition of a Lord Chief Justice. Such a matter couldn't be decided in a day; the changes brought about by adding a seat to the Small Council were significant, and several days of careful deliberation would be needed.

Witte found Grand Maester Pycelle and, through him, established contact with the high-ranking members of the Citadel.

Previously, due to Witte's academic achievements, the Citadel had already agreed to grant him the title of Grand Maester as soon as he took his oath. However, the king had conscripted him, and he'd run off. Still, the two sides hadn't severed ties, and they even had business dealings involving the clock tower and craftsman examinations.

Who knew that after a few years, Witte would become a true mage? The Citadel had always resisted magic, and as a transmigrator, Witte understood them. A world without magic was essentially following a scientific path, with a ceiling that might even be higher than magic, even allowing for breakthroughs into the atmosphere. But in this world, magic truly had resurfaced, and who wouldn't want to learn it?

And since Witte was proficient in both academics and magic, and the relationship between the two sides was still good, the Citadel naturally wanted to win him over. The Citadel decided to grant Witte the honorary title of Grand Maester. In exchange, Witte would also have to supplement the magic discipline's materials and formally establish the study of magic, graduating with the forging of a Valyrian Steel Ring.

Of course, Witte wouldn't give the Citadel too much magic information, at most, the basic theories plus graduating after learning novice-level magic would be enough. For more advanced magic, they would have to go to the Baratheon family's magic school in King's Landing.

Of the seven members of the Small Council, Jon Arryn as the Hand of the King, Stannis as the Master of Ships, and Barristan as the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard would definitely support Robert. Now, Witte had secured Grand Maester Pycelle, so four people agreed. The decisions of the others could be ignored.
