The nobles needed to rest after the campaigning. Most of the Westerlands' merchants and entertainers had gathered in Lannister Port, also waiting for the Riverlands' nobles to arrive overland and join them. The jousting tournament was scheduled to begin in a month.
This was the Queen's family's territory, and Robert didn't dare frequent the entertainment venues. Instead, he took a group of nobles hunting every day. Lannister Port was now bustling, with nobles from the Crownlands, Westerlands, The North, and The Reach. It was lively day and night, a trade-off Robert and Tywin had arranged.
Vitt's back injury had healed, but he claimed he still needed rest and didn't go. Renly, seeing that Vitt wasn't participating, also felt bored. The two of them planned to check on their family's businesses in Lannister Port. They had bought a lot of gold and silver from the Westerlands. Gonsor Hightower was also there, and they needed him to arrange the waterborne transport. This time, they could go south with the Reach's fleet to ensure the safety of the goods.
Walking along the road, Vitt saw Renly looking dejected, knowing that at his age, he liked to show off. Since he wouldn't get a chance this time, Vitt decided to make it up to him and handed him a piece of paper.
After Renly finished reading it, he used magic to burn it. This was a prearranged agreement between the two brothers; they were both highly intelligent and could remember everything they read. They agreed that any notes passed between them would be burned immediately after reading.
Renly stopped, channeling the magic within his body. Vitt also stopped, waiting for him. Before long, a fist-sized ball of magical flame appeared, revolving around Renly.
"A small magical trick I've developed. Maintaining a small ball of magic around the body can improve control over magical power."
"As you wrote in your note, I've now found the balance between mana consumption and recovery, but I can only maintain one fireball," Renly said, and the spinning fireball wobbled slightly.
"When in danger, you can increase your mana to fight back, which is much faster than using other magic. You can also use fire when it's cold, ice when it's hot, and electricity when it's dark. Try ice magic."
Renly severed the mana link, and the fireball vanished with a poof. Then, an ice ball floated from his hand to his shoulder, and condensing air continuously released white mist.
"This magic is really useful! It's much cooler."
"You should keep it up all day."
"How many can you maintain?" Renly was very excited. Wasn't this the ultimate tool for showing off and attracting attention? He could attract attention wherever he went.
"My mana is much greater than yours, but I can only maintain three." Vitt said, and conjured three ice balls from his hand. With a flick of his finger, the three ice balls flew behind him and began to rotate.
The deeds of Vitt and Renly, the two mages on the battlefield, had spread everywhere with the returning soldiers. Especially Vitt's feat of magic that broke the city and his one-man slaughter of dozens within Pike City. Different versions of the story could be heard in every tavern in Lannister Port, and people would gather around them the moment they stepped onto the street. Vitt even gained the nickname "City Breaker".
Renly carried a magic orb with him, making him recognizable wherever he went. He seemed to enjoy being the center of attention, strolling around with his magical air conditioning every day.
Vitt, on the other hand, hid in the library of Casterly Rock, reading books. Sometimes he trained with Jaime and Jorah in the training grounds, and when he had nothing else to do, he'd go find the Imp to chat.
The Imp, Tyrion Lannister, was Tywin's son, but he was despised because he was a dwarf. In Casterly Rock, besides eating and living well, he was only assigned some odd jobs, and he wasn't involved in any important matters. When he first met Vitt, he thought he was another person who looked down on him, but Vitt chatted with him about everything under the sun. Their relationship has been good ever since.
Vitt was also very interested in this original protagonist. He wanted to get to know him first. The Imp wasn't the future Hand of the King yet; he still lacked life experience.
In the training grounds of Casterly Rock, Robert was wielding a warhammer, clashing with Eddard's Ice. Both were clad in full armor. After sparring for more than thirty moves, Robert was already panting and gave up. Eddard seemed fine, but he was also gasping for breath.
"I've gotten too fat these past few years," Robert complained.
Eddard smiled, "With a few years of peace, I can barely hold a sword anymore."
"I won't be participating in this tournament."
"You shouldn't have entered in the first place. You're the King; who would dare to win against you?" Vitt walked over, handing them both water. Ned knew he couldn't say such a thing. Since Robert became King, their relationship had changed, and they could no longer be the close friends they once were.
"Hahaha, if I don't participate, I don't participate. There are many skilled fighters here this time; it'll be exciting to watch them joust." Robert was also helpless in this situation.
"Eddard, we haven't seen Robb since he was born. Though I'm only five years older, I'm still his uncle. Renly and I have a gift for Robb," Vitt said, handing Robert a necklace.
Eddard took it, examining the strange design. The chain was made of ordinary steel, and the pendant was a wolf's head facing forward with its mouth open. The entire wolf head was made of grayish-black metal with smoky stripes. There were also some words on the back, and it vibrated slightly in his hand, causing his gauntlet to clack.
"This is made of Valyrian Steel, but this vibration…?" Eddard knew the material well, as he owned the Valyrian Steel sword, Ice.
"Renly provided the materials; I made it myself. It vibrates whenever there are magical fluctuations nearby. It naturally vibrates when I stand here."
This was an experimental item Vitt had created with enchantment. The pendant contained a small magical power detection mechanism that would rotate when it detected magic within a few hundred meters. Because of its irregular shape, the rotation caused vibrations. The soul used for the enchantment was from a wolf killed on the spot, so Vitt made the outer shell of the mechanism in the shape of a wolf's head for decoration.
"Such a valuable magical item, is it really appropriate to give it to Robb?" Eddard knew magical items were extremely rare, almost extinct.
"Keep the gift for your son!" Robert said from the side, not minding giving good things to his iron brother.
"Vitt gave me a stag-shaped one, but he and Renly are always hanging around the Red Keep, and the necklace kept vibrating, so I just threw it in the closet."
"What's engraved on the back of this badge?" Eddard asked, looking at the claw marks on the back of the direwolf badge.
"High Valyrian: Winter is Coming."
"I'll say thank you for Robb!" Eddard also liked the pendant very much. The wolf shape of his family and the family motto, it was a good gift.
Robert came over and patted Eddard on the shoulder: "You're always so serious." Then he prepared to go take a bath.
Vitt called out to Eddard:
"Wait a moment, I have something to tell you. Let's go somewhere more quiet."
Eddard was a little puzzled, but after thinking about it, he followed Vitt to the rock garden. Vitt used the Whisper Spell to create a barrier around them to conceal their conversation.
"Brother Eddard, do you remember Ashara Dayne, the sister of Dawn?"
"I haven't heard anything about her in a long time. I heard she was dead." Eddard was somewhat saddened. Since Robert had won the war and become king, he hadn't left The North except for the expedition against the Iron Islands.
Vitt looked into Eddard's eyes. "I was in Dorne during that war. We were together for six months before she died. She gave birth to a daughter."
Eddard stared at Vitt in surprise, his face filled with shock and a hint of anticipation.
"She really had a daughter?"
"Yes, your daughter."
"What's her name?"
"The Dayne family has accepted her as one of their own, using her mother's name, Ashara Dayne. Born in 283, she's a few months older than Robb."
Eddard's expression shifted repeatedly as he listened, alternating between joy and worry.
His sister and Prince Rhaegar had a child. He'd brought the boy back to The North and named him Jon Snow, never revealing the mother's identity. He'd always remained silent when questioned. Now, there was another bastard. He was a man of honor, unlike Robert, who casually fathered countless bastards. This was quite a headache.
Vitt didn't speak, letting him process the information. However, Eddard couldn't help but ask:
"Is she well?"
"The Daynes wouldn't mistreat her, given she bears the Dayne name. She's doing well at Starfall, and she also has potential as a mage. When she was born, I told the Daynes I would take her as an apprentice and teach her magic. In a few years, I'll write to her and have her come to me."
"Thank you very much." Eddard embraced Vitt, patting his shoulder. He wasn't good at expressing himself; his mind was still racing, considering what he would do next. Lost in thought, he walked out of the garden.
