Chapter 15 - Dragon Souls

Everyone in Westeros grew up on stories of dragons, and anyone with the chance wanted to see one. Robert moved the dragon skull from the hall, not wanting his ministers to be reminded of House Targaryen, as it was now House Baratheon's reign.

Barristan Selmy, now 47, accompanied Vit and Renly to see the dragon skull. He was currently King Robert's Kingsguard Captain. A few years ago, he had come to Storm's End with Prince Rhaegar for a tournament and had even shared a meal with Vit and Renly. Robert trusted him more than Jaime, who had just killed the king.

The Kingsguard was originally seven, but only Barristan and Jaime remained. The other five had died during the war. Robert would hold a tournament at his wedding to choose five new members to fill the ranks.

The Selmy family were Robert's Vassals in the Stormlands. Barristan himself had been a member of the Mad King's Kingsguard. During the war, he was caught between his family and his oath, ultimately choosing to uphold his oath to defend the king. After being severely wounded at the Trident, Roose Bolton of the North's House Bolton wanted to execute him, but Robert not only healed him but also pardoned him after ascending the throne and appointed him Kingsguard Captain. Robert had gained a loyal guardian and avoided embarrassment for the Selmy family, once again displaying his leadership qualities.

Vit and Barristan chatted about their experiences in Dorne, and they also talked about Dawn, his former comrade-in-arms, now separated by life and death, which was quite a pity. Barristan didn't mention anything about magic, obviously thinking that Robert and his brother were joking.

They arrived at the Dungeon, which was empty now. Those who deserved to die had been executed, and those who didn't were all pardoned by Robert after he took the throne.

Before they even reached the place where the Dragon Bones were stored, a ripple went through his soul, a feeling completely different from the magical fluctuations he was used to. This was the first time he'd encountered anything like it. The closer he got, the more he felt something else trying to merge with him.

Sure enough, after turning a corner, still some distance from the Dragon Bones pile, he saw a phantom Dragon Soul fly out of a dragon skull and merge into Vit's body. After the fusion, a purple energy mass appeared in Vit's consciousness. Vit turned to look at Renly and Barristan, but neither of them noticed anything unusual, and they were walking towards the Dragon Bones.

It seemed that things on the soul level were undetectable even to mages, unless they specifically cultivated spells or abilities related to the soul.

Barristan stood to the side, holding a torch. Renly was excitedly examining dragon skulls of various sizes, touching them here and there. Barristan reminded him,

"Be careful, the Dragon Bones are hot."

Renly usually studied fire magic, and Vit had also taught him knowledge about preventing high temperatures from flames. After hearing this, he was very careful when touching them and wasn't burned.

Vit had absorbed a total of seven Dragon Souls. The souls of dragons that had died too long ago, or whose skulls had been damaged, had already dissipated.

After absorbing the Dragon Souls, Vit also began to observe. There were eighteen dragon skulls here, some large and some small. The recently deceased Dragon Bones were white and extremely hot. After a hundred years, the color would gradually turn black. The seven skulls that had just absorbed souls were still grayish-white, while those black skulls were from an earlier time.

The largest skull should be Balerion's, who died of old age after living for about 200 years. Although dragons were very loyal after recognizing a Dragonrider, even if the Dragonrider ordered them to attack their fellow dragons, they would obey and tear their dragon siblings to pieces. But if their Dragonrider died, they would accept the next Dragonrider. Balerion had four Dragonriders in total, which meant four Dragonknights.

Seeing the two children engrossed, Barristan spoke.

"Dragon Bones have a high iron content and are very hot. Some are used as decorations, and a few are made into Dragonbone Bows. But I've heard that using Dragon Bones products will also attract the insane vengeance of other dragons. So, not many people use Dragon Bones to make things."

Vit analyzed this using his forging skill: When the forging skill reaches its maximum, I'll try making a set of Dragon Bones armor and weapons. Dragons will come to take revenge on those who use Dragon Bones, others might be afraid, but as a Dragonborn, he specifically counters dragons, and he's just waiting for the dragons to deliver their souls!

After leaving the Dungeon, he returned to Maegor's Holdfast to rest. Originally, Maegor's Holdfast was only for the king's family to rest, and other nobles had to stay in King's Landing. But since Robert hadn't held the wedding yet, he was alone, and Vit and Renly were staying here.

At night, Vit looked up at the sky and his consciousness flew into the starry sky.

The Dragon Shout that he had explored before but wasn't useful, now with 7 Dragon Souls, he could see how to use it again.

In the Elder Scrolls V game setting, the Dragon Shout is magic used by dragons in the Dragon Language. Dragons can breathe Dragonfire, and they can also use the Dragon Language to breathe frost, lightning, control the weather, summon creatures, and other types of magic, which are generally more powerful than the magic used by humans, after all, they are huge magical creatures with abundant magic power.

And the Dragonborn, after killing a dragon and absorbing the Dragon Souls, has the basic conditions to use the Dragon Shout. Another very important condition is to understand the Dragon Language and to understand the Dragon Words of Power.

In the game world, the dragon race has its own language grammar and pronunciation, and there are also characters scratched on stones with claws, and the Dragon Words of Power can be applied to the characters again. The Dragon Language is the language of dragons, and the Dragon Words of Power, which contain magical energy, are the key to using the Dragon Shout. Usually, communicating in the Dragon Language does not produce magical fluctuations, just like a mage's spell incantation, otherwise, dragons would have magic flying around when they chat normally.

And the deeper the understanding of the Dragon Words of Power, the greater the power of the Dragon Shouts. Absorbing Dragon Souls in the game also absorbs their knowledge. But the Dragon Souls just absorbed felt like they had no knowledge at all, only a few simple Dragon Language words, like "take off," "land," and "fire."

So Vit deduced: the dragons of Westeros, because House Targaryen only knew basic Valyrian, had long lost the knowledge of High Valyrian and magic. The dragons they raised were practically illiterate, unable to fully speak the Dragon Language, let alone Dragon Language magic, wasting their potential.

Vit knew that after the worlds merged, everything became hardcore. He first wanted to find Unrelenting Force in the Dragon Shouts. This was also the signature ability of all Dragonborn, but he could only understand the first word of power:

First Dragon Word: Force

He put a Dragon Soul into it and felt a dragon whispering in his mind, with countless knowledge and experience about this word flooding in.

Vit turned and faced the bed, took a deep breath, and slowly gathered magic in his throat. He carefully felt the flow of magic, which was completely different from using other kinds of magic. He suddenly opened his mouth and shouted:

"Fus~~~~"

A visible wave of energy burst from his mouth. The pillow flew, the quilt flew, and the bedsheet flew. Even the wooden bed was pushed forward a meter, and the bed legs scraped against the floorboards, making a grating noise.

The power was decent. The Dragon Word of Power, Fus, meant "force," and it made enemies lose their footing. But in the Unrelenting Force Dragon Shout, the last two Dragon Words of Power were completely incomprehensible. Although he'd played the game and knew they were Ro for balance and Dah for push, this was the hardcore, real world of Westeros. Injecting his consciousness into the words meant they were rules-based information, and he couldn't understand them at all.

Vit tried again, taking a deep breath and shouting,

"Fus~~~~Ro~~~~Dah~~~~~"

The pillows, blankets, and sheets flew far away again, and the bed was pushed forward nearly a meter, exactly the same as before.

Sure enough, only the first word worked. The other two were just Dragon Language, not Dragon Words of Power. He couldn't understand them now, nor could he add them to his Dragon Souls. The other Dragon Shouts were also incomprehensible, so he had to give up for now.

He suddenly noticed a crow on the windowsill. When he looked at the crow, it immediately preened its feathers, pretending to be just an animal. But Vit could sense the magical fluctuations on it, and he said,

"Should I call you the Three-Eyed Raven, or Brynden Rivers?"

It seemed that absorbing the Dragon Souls had already changed the future. Now it was watching him. But he'd already entered the realm of the extraordinary. With the Three-Eyed Raven's abilities, it couldn't pose a threat to him on its own, only through manipulating relationships in dreams.

The raven turned its head and stared at Vit.

"I don't want to deal with you, so don't bother me."

Seeing the raven still hadn't left, Vit raised his hand and cast Magelight. Magelight was just a light-producing spell, completely harmless. But the orb of light emitted from his hand had a special characteristic: it would stick to the first object it touched until its magic was exhausted and it disappeared. The orb flew towards the raven's head and stuck to the side of its eye. The raven jumped, trying to shake off the orb, but it was no use. It cawed and flew away.

"Blind your raven eyes!"
