Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: The Cruelty of the Magical World

Magic Meditation was an important form of training for any mage.

In battles between mages—whether magical duels or physical combat—magic power was always required.

During close combat, the outward release of magic power could form a defensive shield to resist an enemy's attacks. One could think of it as similar to projecting internal energy outside the body, using powerful energy to protect oneself.

This was the simplest application. It didn't require learning complicated defensive spells, though it was a bit inefficient and consumed a lot of magic power. It was most suitable for mages with vast reserves of magic and overwhelming physical strength.

For example, Moen, Laxus, Erza, and Natsu. All of them were geniuses with an abundance of magic power from a young age.

Laxus's strength wasn't simply because of that "Dragon Slayer Lacrima." That lacrima merely allowed him to awaken his talent. His own magic reserves were already terrifying—so much so that his body could hardly endure them.

Natsu was much the same. Dragon Slayer Magic wasn't the key to his strength compared to others his age.

And then there was Erza. She used the most basic "Requip Magic" yet was stronger than many who relied on far more powerful spells.

That was talent. That was what determined one's stats.

There was no such thing as weak magic—only weak mages. No matter how powerful the spell, without talent and sufficient stats, one wouldn't even be able to use it.

The world of magic was cruel in this way.

Of course, while talent determined much of a mage's capacity, training could also increase one's reserves of magic power.

It was painstaking work, requiring extreme focus, and absolutely not something that could show results in a short time.

Through Magic Meditation, one both squeezed out the body's potential to expand one's "pool," and simultaneously absorbed magic from the outside world to fill one's "magic source"—in other words, enlarging the pool.

"Wommm—"

Magic flowed steadily. Moen carefully sensed the "magic source" inside his body, swirling like a galactic vortex. Countless specks of azure magic particles merged into it, expanding it bit by bit. This steady feeling of growing stronger was what reassured him the most.

Inside the study room, Levy watched Natsu scribbling furiously while sneaking glances at Moen, who sat quietly cross-legged nearby.

Levy's magical talent wasn't exceptional—at least not when compared to top children of the guild like Moen and the others.

And yet, even she could clearly sense the magical fluctuations around Moen.

In her perception, Moen's body was like a massive vortex, greedily absorbing the surrounding magic. The invisible energy in the air felt almost tangible as Moen devoured it into his body.

Moen-nii… you're amazing!

Levy couldn't help but feel envious. Compared to most mages her age, she was considered talented. But within Fairy Tail, her talent didn't stand out much—because everyone was extraordinary.

Thankfully, Levy was diligent, and her Solid Script Magic suited her well. That allowed her to secure her place in Fairy Tail. She believed hard work could compensate for shortcomings, and that everyone had their specialty. When it came to magical theory, her research was outstanding. Despite her young age, she already possessed a wealth of knowledge.

If I tried meditating right now, I probably wouldn't even be able to absorb a single trace of external magic…

She thought this as she peeked again at Moen.

Among the younger generation of Fairy Tail, Moen was undoubtedly the center of attention, the true leader of the children. All the guild's orphans had grown up following after him.

In the early days, even Laxus used to play together with everyone. But as he entered adolescence, and as he grew more concerned about how others saw him, he drifted away, gradually transforming from a kind older brother into the cold, aloof figure he was now.

But back when Laxus was still that gentle big brother, the other kids were either too young or hadn't joined the guild yet. That's why, to most of them, Moen was their true big brother—the one who shone with dazzling light.

"I'm done!"

Just as Levy was lost in thought while sneaking glances at Moen, Natsu suddenly shouted, startling her so much she almost jumped.

"Eh? Where's Moen-nii?"

Looking up and seeing Levy instead, Natsu froze. He had been so focused just now that he hadn't even noticed the change in his supervisor. But then again, that was pretty normal for a single-threaded creature like him.

"Moen-nii is meditating. I'll check it for you."

Levy let out a small breath of relief. Natsu clearly hadn't noticed her distracted state earlier. With a serious expression, she picked up his notebook.

"Hmm~~~"

Looking at the messy scrawl across the pages, Levy's expression instantly darkened. For a girl of literature like her, trying to read such incomprehensible scribbles was pure torture.

"I'll handle it, Levy. Sorry to trouble you."

As Levy frowned while checking, Moen's voice rang out. He extended his hand, gesturing for her to pass Natsu's workbook to him.

"Ah? Moen-nii, you're done meditating?"

Levy gave a startled "ah" and quickly handed the workbook over.

Her heart raced slightly—surely Moen-nii hadn't noticed she'd been secretly watching him just now? Even if it wasn't anything serious, she would still feel embarrassed if he knew.

"Yeah. Natsu's yelling broke my focus."

Moen chuckled as he ruffled Levy's hair. He noticed something amusing—this girl really had quite a lot of hair.

"I didn't mean to…"

Natsu muttered under his breath, then quickly urged Moen to get on with checking. He wanted to finish and leave the study room as soon as possible.

Being in this book-filled, scholarly atmosphere made him restless. He wanted to get outside and burn off his energy!

"You can actually read these?"

Moen glanced at the notebook, then tossed it straight back at Natsu. Honestly, he couldn't understand a single character.

"Of course I can!"

Natsu picked up the workbook and began reading it out word by word, striking a confident pose. Moen and Levy both exchanged doubtful looks. Could it be… this guy actually understood it?

"…Alright then."

After Natsu finished, Moen let out a sharp breath, then finally declared he had passed. But just as Natsu was about to bolt out of the room, Moen grabbed him by the collar and yanked him back.

"As promised—next is meditation time."

Gripping the back of his neck, Moen forcibly pressed Natsu down onto the floor to sit. This guy was way too energetic, like he had an endless supply of stamina—practically impossible to keep still.

"Meditation, huh…"

"But I don't need that, Moen-nii! I can just eat fire to get stronger!"

Pinned to the floor, Natsu wriggled like he had nails stuck in his backside. Meditation was the last thing he wanted—he much preferred physical training to sitting still.
