Chapter 16: The Remnants of Mewtwo, the Birth of Mewtwo
"System, activate emergency mode! Something incredible has happened!" Ryan was stunned by the scene before him! He had been searching for an exit in this underground facility when he stumbled upon a large "R" symbol on a wall. He had already guessed this was one of Team Rocket's abandoned laboratories. He had no idea what experiments had been conducted inside, but his curiosity got the better of him. He inspected each room until he reached a massive research chamber. He couldn't believe his eyes!
There were about two dozen cylindrical incubation tanks, filled with bizarre small Pokémon, all resembling Mewtwo. Could this be where Team Rocket had been researching and creating Mewtwo?
"Ding. Scan completed. The incubation chambers contain what appear to be failed Mewtwo prototypes. All are genetically unstable and currently deceased. Their bodies are only being preserved in the culture solution. Once the solution degrades, they'll likely dissolve completely."
Ryan remained silent, filled with rage at those mad scientists and chilled by their methods.
"Ding. Mewtwo genetic data has been successfully integrated into the system database. Now issuing bonus rewards.
Option One: The system will revive one of the failed Mewtwo prototypes, restoring it to life. However, its power will be significantly greater than the host's, and the host may face hostility. This option is not recommended.
Option Two: The system will extract the genetic material from all failed prototypes and synthesize them into a Pokémon Egg, hatching a new Mewtwo. However, its initial power will be minimal, requiring training from the beginning. Please choose."
Was this an incredible stroke of luck?! Ryan couldn't believe what he was hearing: "Did I hear that correctly? It can create a living Mewtwo!"
However, the system presented him with a choice: a high-level but potentially disobedient Mewtwo, or a level 1, completely loyal Mewtwo. Ryan figured anyone in their right mind would choose the second option, so he selected it.
Immediately, under Lillie's astonished gaze, the Mewtwo remains from the incubation tanks rapidly dissolved, transforming into streams of silver-white energy. These streams converged in the air and gradually merged, forming into a silvery-white Pokémon Egg.
Ryan supported Lillie with his right arm and reached out with his left to catch the Pokémon Egg. Following the system's guidance, he channeled his bond power into the egg, forming a connection with the small Mewtwo inside. The eggshell then glowed with brilliant white light, and before Ryan and Lillie appeared a young Mewtwo.
Then, a voice echoed telepathically in their minds: "Father! Mother?"
Ryan and Lillie's faces went completely red, though Ryan accepted the little Mewtwo's acknowledgment. Looking at the small Mewtwo before him, he couldn't help but think: "Just like that, I have a Legendary Pokémon!"
It wasn't until Ryan communicated with the little Mewtwo, allowing it to enter a Master Ball, that he realized this wasn't a dream! The ball stopped shaking immediately, confirming the capture was successful.
Of course, he also had to convince Lillie, attributing the incident to his latent psychic abilities. Mewtwo's telepathy had also revealed to Lillie that it was a Psychic-type Pokémon, so she accepted the explanation. After all, the Pokémon world is vast, and there are many phenomena that humans can't fully understand, right?

Ryan hadn't anticipated discovering Team Rocket's underground laboratory within the dark forest. There are many different versions of Mewtwo's origin story, with the manga and anime presenting completely different narratives. In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Blaine assisted Team Rocket in their research and contributed his own DNA to Mewtwo, creating a unique bond between them.
However, the anime presents a different story. "Mewtwo Strikes Back" and related media provide extensive background on Mewtwo's tragic origins. The story reveals how Dr. Fuji's research was funded by Giovanni to create the ultimate Pokémon weapon. It tells of Amber, Dr. Fuji's deceased daughter whose consciousness was briefly recreated alongside Mewtwo's development, and how Mewtwo's growth was shaped by loss, loneliness, and fragmented memories, gradually transforming from an innocent being into a creature consumed by rage and vengeance.
Regardless of the version, Mewtwo's story is deeply tragic. Now, thanks to the system's intervention, another Mewtwo has been born, but compared to the one under Giovanni's control, this one should have a much happier existence.
Furthermore, its acquisition doesn't count as a system-gifted Pokémon, meaning Ryan only needs to capture one more high-quality Pokémon to compete in the Indigo League and complete his quest!
While Ryan couldn't assess the little Mewtwo's individual potential, a Legendary Pokémon's inherent capabilities were undoubtedly no less than perfect. However, adding the little Mewtwo brought Ryan's team to seven Pokémon, forcing him to send one back to Professor Oak's laboratory.
After much deliberation, he reluctantly decided to send back Sylveon. Professor Oak had been asking about his progress several times, and Ryan could already imagine the professor's excitement upon receiving Sylveon. Although he felt reluctant, both Celadon and Fuchsia Gyms specialized in Poison-types, giving Sylveon limited opportunities to shine, so he had little choice.
Carrying Lillie on his back, he continued searching for an exit while investigating the facility further. Even after thorough exploration, he found nothing else of value. This was understandable, as the place had been abandoned and almost everything worthwhile had been removed. Even the Mewtwo remains in the incubation tanks would have degraded once removed from their preservation medium, making them worthless for study.
The exit was sealed, but not too heavily. He released Charizard, Greninja, and Beedrill. Together, the three Pokémon used Hyper Beam to successfully blast the door open.
As they emerged from the facility, they were confronted by a group of hostile Geodude and Graveler glaring at them. Ryan's eye twitched as he said, "I swear we didn't mean to disturb you. Do you believe me?"
In response, various Rock-type attacks came flying their way. Ryan was forced to release all his Pokémon and use Protect to shield himself and Lillie during their retreat.
Mewtwo, staying close to Ryan, saw the Rock-types attacking his father. With a casual wave of his hand, he used powerful Psychic to instantly repel most of the Pokémon. He clenched his small fists, creating a telekinetic barrier that blocked their continued assault. Then, exhausted from the effort, he collapsed and was caught by Charizard. They quickly fled from the cave where the Rock-type Pokémon had gathered.
Once outside, Charizard fired a Hyper Beam, collapsing the entrance and sealing it, temporarily stopping their pursuers. Ryan finally breathed a sigh of relief. As for whether the Geodude and others would be trapped inside, there was no need to worry. These Pokémon all had Rock and Ground typing, so digging tunnels was their natural talent—they wouldn't remain trapped for long.
