Chapter 72
JACE MARINO
The second my hands hit the wheel everything inside me narrowed down to one point, Luka was gone. Missing. Out of the house. Out of our sight. Out of the safety I promised them.
I don't even remember getting in the car. All I know is the engine roared, the convoy followed and every thought slammed against my skull like static.
I kept one hand on the wheel and used the other to speed-dial Voss.
She picked up on the second ring.
"Marino?"
"I need you on something." My voice came out sharper than I wanted but I didn't fix it. I didn't have the bandwidth for politeness. "One of my favorite people is missing. I want a full sweep. Traffic cams, patrols, underground channels, everything. Legal or not."
There was a short pause.
Voss was one of those people who could hear the real message under the words. I don't lose kids. I don't lose people under my protection. Not again.
