Who am I?
Where am I?
What am I doing?
Jeris was left utterly dumbfounded after taking Ur's punch, so dazed he was unable even to gather his thoughts.
His old magic instructor once told him that many factors decide the outcome of a battle between mages: mana reserves, mental strength, casting speed, or perhaps who could find the flaw in the other's magic first.
But never, not once, did anyone mention fists.
Just as Jeris began regretting all the money he had wasted learning what now felt like fake magic, another brutal punch slammed into the side of his head, leaving his ears ringing.
Not that Ur cared about Jeris's regret.
Ur had finally caught the culprit, and there was no way he was letting this opportunity slip by without some righteous, cough, divine retribution.
Heavy punches and kicks poured down on Jeris like a storm, each one landing with savage precision until Jeris's mind nearly went blank.
Seconds stretched into eternity, then the pain finally snapped him awake.
"Wait, stop! I surrender! I'll come with you!" Jeris cried, raising a trembling hand.
Ur's fist paused. Then, he punched harder.
"AAAH—N-nooo—mmfghhh—"
The screams went on for a solid five minutes.
At last, when Jeris' voice was hoarse and broken, Ur finally stopped, refreshed and satisfied, then hoisted the swollen, battered, barely conscious thief over his shoulder like a sack of grain.
Thud!
He had barely taken a few steps when a body dropped from above, crashing to the ground right in front of him.
Ur froze instantly, instincts tightening. He hadn't forgotten where he was.
A groan of pain rose from the fallen figure.
He stepped closer, and there lay a man with a massive sword wound across his chest, grievously injured and utterly helpless. On his neck blazed the black guild mark of Devil's Fang.
Ur stood silent for a few seconds, then stepped forward to raise his foot. Magic power surged into his foot.
Crunch.
The man's neck twisted with a sharp crack. His life ended instantly.
And in that moment, a surge of magic power flowed from the corpse into Ur's body, filling him with sudden power that made his expression flicker with unguarded delight.
Jeris: "…"[Σ(°△°|||)︴]
Holy crap, this guy's a lunatic!
The man hadn't been an enemy to Ur. He wasn't resisting. And yet Ur had not only killed him, but smiled about it. What kind of monster was this? If he wasn't a pervert, then he was a cold-blooded killer!
Ur, savoring the rush of new strength, suddenly noticed his captive trembling. His brow furrowed, and he casually smacked Jeris across the head, knocking him out cold.
"Mages sure are tough. Beaten half to death and still have the nerve to twitch?"
"Hmm... Don't tell me he's just faking unconsciousness?"
Ur narrowed his eyes, studied the limp body on his shoulder, then gave him another heavy slap to the back of the head. Only when Jeris's neck finally lolled, completely slack, did he relax.
Jeris: "…MMP!"*
With Jeris dealt with, Ur finally turned his gaze back to the corpse.
He had never killed before.
But now that he had, he realized, it wasn't nearly as difficult as he imagined.
Before stomping down, he had hesitated, even holding back slightly. But the man's wounds were too severe. Even with restraint, the life had slipped away.
For a split second afterward, Ur's mind had gone blank. His very first thought was: I'm going to prison!
Then it hit him.
Wait, I'm not even on Earth anymore. What prison?
That realization brought him back to himself.
As for all those stories about first kills bringing nausea, guilt, vomiting—none of that hit him. He hadn't chopped the guy into pieces, after all. It was just a clean finish.
Still, no matter how he looked at it, he had killed a man.
And now the real problem.
Having killed this Devil's Fang mage, Ur suddenly felt like lingering here. But he knew staying put was a death wish.
So, was there a way to have it both ways?
Asking for a friend.
Very urgent.
