Elder Thea's power slammed into my magic wall and broke it like glass. I fell backward, and blood came out of my nose.
"Run!" I yelled at Asher, who was pulling Maya toward the back door of the cabin.
Selene, the Moon Goddess, laughed, and the sound cut through the air like ice. "You can't escape what was written before your birth, witch."
I cast a spell that would have bound her, but she blew it away like dust. Elder Thea moved forward, her eyes shining that strange red, her moves stiff as if controlled by unseen strings.
"You're not yourself, Elder," I said, desperately trying to get to the wise woman I knew. "Fight it!"
For a moment, something flickered in Thea's eyes—recognition, pain—before the red glow returned stronger than before.
