Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: The Blossoms of Trust

Days passed in quiet recovery. Yuexin remained within the serene halls of the Longyun palace, her wounds gradually healing under the care of skilled physicians. Though she tried to remain unnoticed, it was impossible to ignore the weight of her surroundings. Everywhere she walked, she felt the gaze of attendants who wondered why their emperor had personally brought a wounded girl into his palace.

Emperor Long Renzhou visited her often, though always with an air of reserved distance. At first, Yuexin found his presence overwhelming, the sheer force of his authority making her bow her head and hide her trembling hands. But as the days unfolded, she began to see a different side of him.

He would sit by her window as the evening breeze carried the scent of blooming orchids. Sometimes, he spoke of the burdens of ruling a vast empire. Other times, he asked her about her life as a "traveler," though his eyes always seemed to search for truths she dared not reveal.

One evening, as the moonlight spilled across the courtyard, Yuexin found herself laughing softly at a story he told of his younger days—a memory of sneaking out of the palace to test his sword against local warriors. The sound of her laughter surprised even her; she had thought she had forgotten how to smile.

Renzhou's gaze softened. "You carry sorrow in your eyes," he said quietly. "But it seems the moonlight can still chase away shadows, if only for a moment."

Yuexin lowered her eyes, hiding the ache in her chest. If only he knew the truth of who I am…

Yet, against her will, she found herself trusting him little by little, like petals of a blossom opening with the dawn.

But not everyone in the palace welcomed her presence. From afar, a pair of eyes watched with growing unease.

Madam Wu Shuang, the most favored consort of the Emperor, clenched her silk handkerchief tightly in her hands. She had reigned over the inner palace with grace and dominance for years. But now, a strange girl of unknown origin sat in the Emperor's chambers, speaking to him, drawing laughter from his lips.

Jealousy burned like fire in Wu Shuang's chest. She swore silently to herself: This woman will not take what is mine.

And thus, beneath the calm surface of the palace, the first seeds of rivalry began to bloom.
