Chapter 45 - Skeletal Mishaps

Back in the Cave of Death the Litch stood in front of his small army of undead as he listened to the latest report telling him iv the orcs total defeat at the hand of 2 individuals. His muted cry's of rage bordered on mania as he believed that his hubris had finally caught up to him. After all it would seem that in what should have been his moment of triumph over his ancient foe had instead turned into a nightmare as another Arctic leopard beastkin was now hunting down and destroying his minions.

Surely this must be the work of a god to have been orchestrated as such?! But irrelevant of his fury and despair he must face the facts. A leopard and a dragon were at his door, would he roll over and accept his true death or would he fight with everything he had to be able to continue his unlife another day? Well the answer should be obvious for this ancient undead. He would naturally fight.

"All forces, prepaid for combat." He growled out as he, for the first time in millenia prepared to enter the field of battle himself. After all if you want something done right you sometimes have to do it yourself.

And so with military precision the army of undead ranging from orc skeletons to more bestial undead horrrors began their procession out of the cave and towards their fated foe.

Meanwhile Violet had finally been released from Lunas tight embrace and the young woman had managed to somewhat compose herself after her outpouring of emotions just now. Both companions were low on resources but now that they had some time to rest they were beginning to come back. Luna began to pull out some food and began mechanically eating whilst Violet wandered over to the body of the shaman and began her own feast.

Its flesh was quite tender and Violet would happily eat it again, especially when she got through its chest and towards its heart. The thrum of mana was packed into the organ and it created a delightful tingle over her tongue which she thourghly enjoyed.

The two rested for a solid 30 minutes giving them more than enough time to get back into a fighting form. "Hey so what happened to all the undead? This place was crawling with them yesterday. Did they all go somewhere?"

Luna paused and tapped her bottom lip with her index finger. "Hmm that is a good point their should be around 50ish undead if we counted right yet we haven't seen a single one. Did they maybe all retreat to the cave once we started the fight?"

"Are they protecting something in there?" Violet wondered. "Maybe it's something really tasty and that's why they have to protect it!"

Luna instantly burst Violet's growing bubble. "I doubt it, what would undead need with something tasty? It's probably an artifact of some kind, maybe the thing that allowed the orcs to grow in number? Or something similar for the undead? They had to come from somewhere right."

"Well… it could still be tasty!" Violet said somewhat indignantly, she had evidently gotten quite bored of eating mainly orcs these past few days. Whilst the shaman was a decent change it was at the end of the day still an orc so was still quite samey.

As the two debated if a death attuned artifact would be tasty or not the undead army was now exiting the cave and was beginning their march towards them both. Violet heard the telltale sounds of footsteps approaching and stopped her banter with Luna and instantly took on a more serious posture, this was noticed by Luna who stood herself up and hefted her spear ready for whatever may be coming their way.

It wasn't long before they both saw what was making the noise and they turned in the direction of the cave at the back of the valley. There walking in a formation that was significantly more precise than anything the orcs managed to achieve was a small army of undead.

The came in all shapes and sizes but a good number of them were orcish in origin, clearly death was not the end of some of these orcs service. At the head of the procession walked a hulking creature of bone and metal armour. It stood almost 10ft tall and exuded a aura of martial might whilst the chill of death seemed to roll of of its body.

The army stopped a good 20 meters away, the two sides stared at each other for a moment neither side making a move. "Umm what's happening?" Violet asked.

"I have no idea." Luna whispered, and it truly was an odd sight seeing so many undead just standing there doing nothing. But that didn't last for long and both girls noticed movement coming from the back of the hord and seemingly making its way towards the front. Both companions tensed ready for any kind of attack that may come. However, to both of their surprise it wasn't an attack that arrived but a singular undead.

The undead that walked to the head of the army was quite… unremarkable. It has just a basic skeleton from what they could see. Standing around the same height as Luna, it did wear some tattered robes that might have once upon a time been white but were not a mucky grey black. "So you are the ancestor of Runtor."

Luna blinked in surprise not expecting the skeleton to speak. "Who is this Runtor you speak of? I know no one with this name." She hesitantly replied.

A scoffing sound came from the skeleton before it spoke again. "Ignorant child you don't even know your own history, how pathetic."

Hearing this pile of bones talk so disrespectfully to her companion caused a rage to build up within Violet and she activated one of her least used skills, telepathy. "Don't you dare insult my companion you stupid undead." A growl echoed out as Violet took a step forward whilst she for the first time summoned two void lances at once and made them hover above her.

Seeing and hearing the rage that his words seemed to induce on the young dragon the litch carried on hoping to bait them into doing something silly that he and his undead could take advantage off. "Stay out of this lizard your betters are speaking." He announced haughtily. And well he did manage to successfully provoke Violet, he just underestimated her power and how much he pissed them both off.

Without waiting any longer Violet launched both lances at once aiming both at the skeleton but staggered by half a second. It turned out to be the correct choice as the first Lance impacted a shimmering grey shield before exploding and shattering the shield. The skeleton thought he had thwarted the arrogant dragon and prepared to fire off an attack of his own.

That was when the second Lance landed. It impacted its chest, punching right through before exploding and completely destroying the skeleton in a single move. Then like puppets with their strings cut every remaining undead collapsed in a heap of bones and body parts.

"Hu that was easy."

Luna blinked in amused shock. "It-it really was…"
