"DXD: Multiverse Journey"Chapter 245: Let's Date the Spirits
Fifteen thousand meters above Tengu City, the Ratatoskr battleship hovered, cloaked and vigilant.
"Commander, analysis complete. That sphere is definitely emitting traces of spiritual energy," a crew member reported crisply.
Kotori paused mid-lick of her lollipop, brows knitting. "So it's real? Don't tell me… a new Spirit's appeared?"
She'd ordered a full scan the moment Shuo's message came in. The results were more than she'd bargained for.
"No, not a new Spirit," Reine said from her seat below, voice calm but eyes sharp behind dark circles. "We analyzed the wavelengths. That sphere contains spiritual signatures matching Origami, Nia, Kurumi, Yoshino, Kotori, Miku, the Yamai twins, and Tohka."
Kotori's lollipop nearly slipped from her mouth. "Wait—our spiritual power?"
Reine nodded. "Correct. The readings are unmistakable."
Before Kotori could process that, Kannazuki piped up with his usual death wish. "So it was you all along, Commander? Trying to catch Nangong-san's attention? My, how devious."
Kotori shot him a withering glare and snapped her fingers. Two security heavies materialized and dragged the hapless Kannazuki from the bridge.
"Aaah! I was only joking! Commander, mercy! Yamete—!"
Reine continued, unruffled. "My hypothesis: this sphere is formed from spiritual energy unconsciously released by the Spirits. In other words, it's a physical manifestation of certain… emotions."
She paused, letting her words settle.
"For example, the desire to monopolize little Shuo. Which naturally leads to… jealousy."
A stunned silence.
Kotori's cheeks turned scarlet as the realization dawned. "You mean… that sphere is the sum of all our—"
Reine nodded. "If we want to dissipate it, the most effective way is for Shuo to go on one-on-one dates, fulfilling each Spirit's wishes. What do you think, Commander?"
Kotori fell quiet, teeth worrying her lollipop stick. She couldn't think of a better plan.
—
"Dates? For real? We can actually go on dates with Shuo right now?"
The living room erupted with excitement. All the Spirits turned to Kotori and Reine, eyes sparkling with anticipation.
Kotori crossed her arms, exhaling in surrender. "Don't get ahead of yourselves, Tohka."
Reine lifted a small bucket of bamboo sticks. "The order will be decided by lottery. You're free to choose your date activities—Shuo will agree to anything you ask."
"Ara ara, a date with Shuo-chan? I'm getting excited already~" Kurumi purred.
"With Darling? My heart's all fluttery," Miku chimed in, hands pressed to her cheeks.
The girls crowded forward, each drawing a stick, the air thick with competitive tension.
Moments later, they compared numbers, announcing their draws one after another.
Reine raised her voice. "Starting tomorrow, you'll go on your dates in order. No swapping."
Kaguya, who'd drawn number one, puffed up with pride. "Heh, tough luck for the rest of you. After my perfect date, anything that follows will just feel bland!"
Yuzuru deadpanned, "Prediction: Kaguya's date will crash and burn. It will become a cautionary tale for all."
"It will not! I'll make it unforgettable!" Kaguya shot back, cheeks flushed.
"We'll see," Yuzuru replied, unblinking.
The room threatened to devolve into chaos. Shuo, sensing imminent disaster, made a tactical retreat toward the window.
That's when he saw her.
Across the street, a girl stood alone—tall and graceful, sunlight catching her long golden hair. Her eyes were a soft, uncanny pink. She wore a white sailor uniform from a school he didn't recognize, black thigh-highs framing that perfect "absolute territory." A pink shoulder bag hung from her shoulder, and a white butterfly ribbon tied her ponytail. Silver earrings glinted in the afternoon light.
Mayuri.
The moment Shuo reached the window, their eyes met. The world seemed to hush around them, time slowing to a crawl. Neither moved, neither spoke. What passed between them was silent—unreadable.
Then, a truck rumbled past, blocking his view. When it was gone, Mayuri had vanished.
A pang of disappointment tugged at Shuo's chest.
Truthfully, he could probably resolve Mayuri's vanishing with brute force—he had the power, and he knew she wouldn't resist. After all, she was born from the Spirits' jealousy and possessiveness, a living embodiment of their tangled feelings for him.
But that wasn't enough—not if he wanted to truly reach her.
No. He'd do it right. He'd follow the story to its end.
"It won't be long now," Shuo murmured, turning from the window.
Tomorrow, the real challenge would begin: nine Spirits, nine dates, and one chance to change a fate.
