"DXD: Multiverse Journey"Chapter 239: Origami's Master Plan—Seafood Barbecue Showdown
"Shuo, look what I caught!"
Tohka bounded up, eyes shining, both hands triumphantly hoisting a wriggling spiny lobster. Shuo blinked—forty centimeters, at least. She must've nabbed it while swimming.
"Hehe, look, look! Shuo, it's a giant lobster!"
She thrust it toward him, her face lit with pure, childlike glee.
"Princess Tohka, you're incredible!"
Shuo took the lobster, ruffling her hair in the way you'd praise a kid who just won a gold star.
He glanced at the catch—impressive. Not to be outdone, Yoshino wandered over with a pile of scallops cradled in her arms.
Looks like dinner's about to get interesting.
As he eyed the growing seafood haul, an idea sparked. If they could catch this much, why not go all out tonight? A seafood barbecue—grill, skewers, and all. The villa's kitchen had everything they needed.
When Shuo pitched the plan, the girls lit up. Especially Tohka—her white ribbon practically twitched with excitement.
"Seafood barbecue!!!"
She grabbed Kaguya and, in a flash, the two charged back toward the sea, ready for round two.
Kurumi watched them bolt, a hand over her mouth as she laughed. "My, my, Tohka-chan never changes."
Sawa nodded, smiling. "That's just Tohka. Mention food and she's off like a rocket."
"Tch. Glutton," Origami muttered, but she and Yuzuru headed for the beach too.
With everyone mobilizing, Shuo got moving as well. He needed to pick up some extra meat and veggies—seafood alone wouldn't cut it.
—
Not long after, arms full of groceries, Shuo returned—only to stop dead, jaw slack.
Out on the water, literal hurricanes whipped up monstrous waves, crashing onto the beach with tidal force.
"Ahahaha! Witness the might of the Yamai sisters, children of the hurricane!"
"Affirmative. With us here, seafood is limitless."
Kaguya and Yuzuru, decked out in Astral Dresses, were using their Spirit powers to summon the sea itself. Lobsters, scallops, fish—an entire marine buffet—were being flung onto the sand. Tohka was already knee-deep in the haul, gleefully scooping up anything that moved.
"So much seafood! Kaguya, Yuzuru, you're amazing!"
Shuo and the other girls exchanged looks of utter disbelief.
Using Spirit powers for a seafood run? That was a new level of overkill.
Wasn't there supposed to be some dignity in being a Spirit? Guess not.
Shuo just sighed and headed for deeper waters himself. Most of the beached seafood was tiny—hardly enough for one of Tohka's snacks, let alone a feast.
He dove into the surf, slicing through the water with supernatural ease. To him, the ocean was just a giant, living seafood market. He hunted, gathered, and moved on—again and again—until he'd gathered enough to feed an army.
Back on shore, the girls had long since collapsed into beach chairs. Kotori watched Shuo, still darting through the water, and couldn't help but mutter, "Is this guy even human? Does he ever get tired?"
Origami, nearby, blushed at the memory of her own "first time" with Shuo. Even teaming up with Tohka, they'd been no match for his stamina.
By sunset, the seafood pile was finally big enough for everyone. Honestly, what the girls caught wouldn't even fill a single tray compared to Shuo's haul.
Why go to all this trouble instead of just buying it? Shuo insisted on "experiencing normal life," whatever that meant.
As dusk settled, Shuo, Shido, and the villa's resident kitchen experts got to work. They cleaned, prepped, and skewered the bounty, then fired up the grill.
The first sizzle of meat and seafood sent a wave of mouthwatering aroma through the air. The girls all but drooled in anticipation.
"Shuo, is it ready yet? My stomach's growling!"
Tohka was practically vibrating with hunger, eyes fixed on the grill.
"Almost, almost…" Shuo sprinkled on the seasoning and announced, "First batch is up!"
He handed out skewers and seafood, then quickly loaded the grill again.
Tohka took a huge bite. "Hot—! But so good!"
The others followed suit, moans of delight echoing around the patio.
"Not bad. You've got real skill, kid."
"Mmm, delicious!"
"It smells incredible…"
Compliments flew as quickly as the food disappeared.
"Hehe, you know what goes perfectly with barbecue?"
Nia, halfway through a skewer, suddenly dashed inside.
Moments later, she reappeared, arms loaded with beer.
"Barbecue without beer? Unthinkable!"
"Hey, Nia! Most of them aren't even legal yet!" Shuo protested, lips twitching as he watched her pass out cans.
"Relax, kid. It's just beer. One can won't hurt. Besides, what's the worst that could happen?"
She waved off his concerns, popping open a can and handing them out.
"Barbecue and beer—now that's the good life!"
Seeing Nia take a long swig, the girls hesitated only a moment before following suit.
"It's a little bitter, but there's this malty aftertaste…"
"Yeah, I never thought beer and barbecue would go so well together."
"Told you! Cheers—glug, glug, glug…"
Tohka still looked wary, memories of her last King's Game disaster with Origami clearly haunting her.
Origami, meanwhile, watched the girls, a sly glint in her eye. She lifted her can and took a deliberate sip in front of Tohka.
"What's wrong? Don't tell me you're scared to drink?"
"Who—who's scared? I'll drink! Watch me!"
Tohka popped her can and took a determined gulp.
Origami's lips curled into a mysterious smile.
Now, nothing will stand in the way of my plan.
Out by the grill, Shuo shivered, suddenly feeling as if something—someone—had set their sights on him.
The barbecue rolled on, laughter and chatter growing louder as the night wore on. Skewer after skewer vanished, and the pile of empty beer cans kept growing.
By the end, the girls were thoroughly tipsy, cheeks flushed and spirits high, the patio littered with the evidence of a night well spent.
